The Kentucky chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is helping host an event on gun violence Saturday at Spalding University in Louisville.

Due to limited space, organizers are asking people to register in advance for free tickets by going to the  event website  or by texting the word SCREENING to 64433.

Planned in conjunction with the National Rifle Association convention in Louisville this weekend, the event will include a screening of the documentary "Under the Gun."

Produced and narrated by journalist Katie Couric, the film examines why, despite recent mass shootings and an increase in gun violence, little meaningful change has occurred at the national level to reduce such firearm deaths.

The event will be held at the Spalding ballroom on the third floor of its building at 812 S. 2nd St.

Doors open at 10 a.m. when guests may view an exhibit of quilts made by survivors of gun violence.

A vigil for victims and survivors of gun violence will be held at 10:30 a.m., led by Joe Phelps, pastor of Highland Baptist Church, and Peggy Cecil Hinds, interim director of the Kentucky Council of Churches.

The film will be shown at 11 a.m.

A panel discussion will begin at 1 p.m. featuring Shannon Watts, founder of the national Moms organization; Pamela Bosley, whose son, Terrell, was fatally shot in an unsolved murder in Chicago in 2006; and Sandy and Lonnie Phillips, whose daughter, Jessi, was shot and killed in the Aurora, Colo., theater mass shooting. All three panelists appear in the "Under the Gun" documentary.
