Black Earth: The Complete Trilogy Kindle Edition
All Three Novels in One Volume!
Dawning, Meridian, and Nightfall
Thief. Vagrant. Scoundrel. Words to describe a nameless Demon born of Shadow, lost in a world of Humans. The elements are his to command, but for all his magic, he cannot cure himself of the fatal malady that is his bane. In his desperate search for a remedy, he liberates a powerful immortal prince held captive inside a mountain. Eraekryst’s ability to read and guide the thoughts of others leaves the Demon a wary companion as they venture to Mystland, the land of magic. Two witches will alter their fate and cast them far from the lives they had known.
They decide to head north, to become part of a land where the earth is cold and black, and the motives of its inhabitants are just as obscure. Their greatest threat watches and waits for their inevitable downfall. Seranonde the Huntress, a sinister immortal feared even by her own kind, has her sight locked upon both Eraekryst and the Demon. Only time will tell if they will fall victim to Seranonde’s dark intentions, or if their own destructive tendencies will be their ultimate undoing.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2016I made the mistake of skipping book two by accident, so I had to piece meal the story together. This book was better written than book one. To be honest, I didn't know where book one was hoing, and there were a lot of dead ends in the book that did not support the story line. Book three had a better flow, and I felt like the story had a purpose especially towards the end. Book one I would have given a two star, the third book is worth a four star.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2017The plotline to this saga is perfectly paced. The story pushes itself and sucks you in and the character development especially the main characters Hawkshadow and Erykryst pull you on the edge of your seat and throw you down an immense emotional roller coaster that you can't help but read more. Please do not stop this story I will be buying more!!!!

General Themes (minor spoilers... please read at your own risk)
"Dawning" (412 printed pages)... Strange circumstances throws two unlike characters together. One a benevolent but troubled demon (Arythan) and the other, an 'immortal prince' (Eraekryst)... both with some magical abilities. With personalities completely unmatched they travel through the realm seeking some answers to their own unique problems. But it does not take long for them to discover that they depend (however reluctantly) on each other when the going gets tough. They encounter an assortment of people, groups and royalty, who upon learning their 'talents', wish to procure their services in attaining their own personal goals and agendas. Some of course are good, some decidedly not. Thus the tale unfolds...
"Meridian" (372 printed pages)... Our two heroes having become separated; Arythan has pledged to King Garriker II in the northern realm of Cerborath. His main involvement is now with the King's son, Michael, and his responsibilities include being a bodyguard to the heir and overseeing the Black Ice harvesting.
Eraekryst's tale becomes entwined with that of Catherine Lorrel (cousin to King Garriker II) after his disastrous encounter with Seranonde the Huntress... where his magical abilities have been significantly altered (and not for the better).
"Nightfall" (395 printed pages)... The epic medieval fantasy adventure continues with Arythan and Erik continuing their journeys (but separately), on two different continents, before eventually coming together again for the final few chapters. Erik and Catherine are on the tropical island landmass of Secrailos where Erik struggles with his memory. Arythan is on the continent of Northern Secramore where he has become deeply involved (with great reluctance), in the political intrigues that are the smoldering relationship between the neighboring realms of Cerborath and Desnera.
Some thoughts on the "Black Earth" trilogy...
The Pros:
1.) a well written and edited... superbly done.
2.) a character driven tale with a near perfect blend of action and encounters.
3.) a tense, exciting work, filled with the unexpected and all brought together with a nice sense of pace and timing.
4.) the authors spent the time to really develop several main characters i.e. Arythan, Erik and Catherine. They are interesting, complicated and sensitive towards the company they keep and the settings in which they find themselves.
5.) important characters could be injured or killed, giving the tale a realistic quality. It added a sense of believability despite being a fantasy adventure.
6.) the quality of prose was exceptional, making for an easy to read tale and when coupled with an exciting story line, had me eager to return to this book whenever time permitted.
7.) an extensive 'Glossary and Pronunciation' is found at the end of this book giving some extra information on persons, places and things found between the covers.
8.) three maps... much appreciated as it gave the reader a sense of distance, direction and topography.
9.) and finally, I really liked the change in the cover art for this book (AND the series)... it just seems more in keeping with the dark and mysterious theme. Somehow the colored stained glass covers just didn't do it for me.
Impressions:
Matt and Stef have written an epic medieval fantasy trilogy that was everything I'd hoped for. Told in the style found only with professional story-tellers; exciting, easy to read and most important, enthralling... it just flowed from the pages.
No Young Adult fare here, this was truly an 'adult' fantasy adventure; there were dark and evil things going on in this fabulous tale.
The last book, "Nightfall", was "raynicholsonsreviews" fantasy/adventure book of the year 2013.

3.0 out of 5 stars Torturous
A decent tale, adequately told. By the third book it had become an endurance contest. After achieving the victory of completion I remain ambivalent about whether it was worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smashing
Invested in the characters almost from the start and they grew more interesting as the progressed. Enjoyed this series a lot but hate the cliffie ending.
The only thing that really gets to me (apart from a few typos where the self-editing got careless) is the unrelenting misery the protagonist suffers. Poor Demon, he never catches a damn break. Not, I hasten to add, that I expected violets and roses but please. the lad deserves a few decent meals and some affection, as well as a decent night's kip. Erik is annoying, btw.
On the whole. Good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a collection!
It is in our nature to root for the underdog.... against all odds.... to a happy(?) ending to a tale of woe deceit and treachery. And follow hopefully these tales I did. Enthralled with the characters and with how "human" they behaved. I would heartily recommend this tome!
