The record arrived in perfect condition. So fine packaging and the record arrived within the promised timeframe. Smooth transaction.

The record itself is sort og typical english psychedelic whimsy with a jazzy edge, from 2 of the founding members of King Crimson. There's a lot of humour and otherworldly feel to this record. There's none of the dark, symphonic, polyrhytms that would be incorporated in King Crimson's music. This is three guys in a seemingly carefree world. Nevertheless the music is executed with enormous talent and potential and nothing like you would expect from Robert Fripp, Peter Giles and Michael Giles. The record can in places remind me of the album Igginbottom's Wrench, which has Allan Holdsworth featured as guitarist.

5,0 von 5 Sternen Where "it" all began ...
Bewertet in Großbritannien am 9. April 2014
(...unless you count The Brain's classic "Nightmares in red" 45, which I don't, as only Pete was on it for certain...)

A wonderfully warm, witty, strange, crafted LP of great songs, superbly arranged & played. "Of its time", certainly, but nonetheless an oft unfairly maligned recording; there's so much great music & defiant iconoclasm here. King Crimson fans & afficionados of late 60s psychedelic pop music, look no further ("The Brondesbury tapes" are also more than worthy of investiagtion should you be of either persuasion); but give it a go anyway.

Bewertet in Italien am 14. Juli 2023

5,0 von 5 Sternen An enlightening record that is a must for King Crimson and McDonald & Giles lovers
Bewertet in den USA am13. Januar 2022
This is pre-King Crimson and pre-McDonald and Giles by only a year or two, but it is so totally different as to be seen as a decade’s difference. There are subtle hints of what was to come - certain bass riffs, jazz based counterpoint drum riffs, staggeringly good staccato runs on guitar, strong keyboard and flute contributions - but nothing here would hint at the depth and ground-breaking nature of what would come in 1969 and 1970. The growth and maturity of these excellent musicians in those couple of years is staggering. But, now, to the record at hand.

The record is ostensibly broken into three parts. The first is a group of nine songs mostly written by the Giles brothers around a story line penned by Fripp, although the songs do not directly pertain to the story line. Same with the second group of songs, this time, bracketing a repeated dialog thread. The third part is a collection of many of the songs from the earlier parts, mastered to be released as singles, all of which were abject failures. There is a certain Monty Pythonish humor and lighthearted ‘poppiness’ to most of the songs that makes you wonder what these guys were trying to accomplish. I mean, my god, The Beatles were releasing the White Album for Christ’s sake! That said, the songs are tight, well-written (great hooks), well-produced and, of course, the musicianship is excellent. There are numerous songs that have become ear worms as they are just so damn good in their pop style.

So, for those prog lovers who have to have the entire catalog of their gods (as I have to do), this is a key addition. Young, amorphic, exuberant and thoroughly enjoyable!

Ancient rare recording that originally sold a mere 600 copies worldwide.

    3,0 von 5 Sternen DELICIOSO!
Bewertet in Spanien am 10. November 2012
