Chains of Gold * (1991, John Travolta, Joey Lawrence, Marilu Henner, Bernie Casey, Hector Elizondo, Conchata Ferrell, Benjamin Bratt) – Classic Movie Review 4948

Director Rod Holcomb’s 1991 thriller is a missing John Travolta movie – and deservedly so – in which he plays Scott Barnes, a Miami social worker who infiltrates a dangerous drug-running street gang, run by Carlos (Benjamin Bratt), to try to locate his missing young friend (Joey Lawrence) without blowing his cover.

Alas, there is no gold here, just an off-colour Travolta performance, his own turgid story that raises little conviction, some routine action and much violence.

Chains of Gold is one from the dog days of Travolta’s career before Pulp Fiction brought him back.

It also stars Joey Lawrence, Marilu Henner, Bernie Casey, Hector Elizondo, Conchata Ferrell, and Benjamin Bratt.

Also in the cast are Ramon Franco, Tammy Lauren, Raphael Rey Gomez, Jack Lam, Anson Downes, Will Knickerbocker, Jafari Dunn, John Archie, David S Lomax.

It is written by John Petz, Linda Favila, Anson Downes and John Travolta, shot by Bruce Surtees and Dariusz Wolski, produced by Jonathan D Krane and Don Schain, and scored by Trevor Jones.
