Hello everyone,

My name is Friedrich Schwarzschild and I work as a foreign journalist for a small German periodical company based in Magdeburg.

For this week I will be writing articles on the effects of colonialism in many countries regarding pre-, during and post-colonialist times and for this week I will focus on Mexico and how Spanish colonialism affected Mexico.

For those who live or have lived in Mexico can you please give answers to the following questions (please answer each question to the best of your knowledge):

1) How are race-relations between the indigenous Mexicans, Mestizo Mexicans and the White Mexican people? Do indigenous and/or Mestizo Mexicans ever blame the White Mexicans for present-day or past problems?

2) Does a racial hierarchy exist in Mexico in which those with lighter skin have more social/political advantages over those with darker skin? Does such a hierarchy exist in Latin America at all?

3) Does the Spanish government or its people feel any sense of shame for past colonialism in Mexico?

4) Do white Mexicans ever segregate themselves from the Mestizo or indigenous Mexicans?

5) Do any Mexican people embrace the belief that the US southwest was stolen from Mexico and that Mexicans have every right to re-take or enter the US southwest?

6) Does any aspect of the Mexican government tell its people or teach its children that the US southwest belongs to Mexico?

Thank you for any assistance.

1) How are race-relations between the indigenous Mexicans, Mestizo Mexicans and the White Mexican people? Do indigenous and/or Mestizo Mexicans ever blame the White Mexicans for present-day or past problems?

There is not a racial divide between white and mestizo people in Mexico, society usually considers someone Mexican as simply Mexican and not as white or mestizo, etc, yet the relations with the indigenous Mexican are different, some people discriminate Indians because they are poor or don't speak spanish properly, and some people really don't care much, also calling someone an indian in Mexco is an insult.

2) Does a racial hierarchy exist in Mexico in which those with lighter skin have more social/political advantages over those with darker skin? Does such a hierarchy exist in Latin America at all?

Not all the Mexico's elite is white, there are many Mestizos and even some people of indigenous origins too (although is more rare).

I can't speak for many parts of Latin America, just those I know in Brazil for example usually black people have less social/political advantages over the other races.

3) Does the Spanish government or its people feel any sense of shame for past colonialism in Mexico?

Not really as far as I know

4) Do white Mexicans ever segregate themselves from the Mestizo or indigenous Mexicans?

Some people do, although the segregation is more based on social class than on race, Fresas (haves) and Nacos (have nots) some fresas segregate themselves from those who they consider naco, but it depends on the individual

5) Do any Mexican people embrace the belief that the US southwest was stolen from Mexico and that Mexicans have every right to re-take or enter the US southwest?

Some people do, others don't really care much about it.

6) Does any aspect of the Mexican government tell its people or teach its children that the US southwest belongs to Mexico?

What they teach in school is that those territories once were part of Mexico but that because of Santa Anna's Lack of planning or attention to them Texas decided to rebel against the central government, then Sant Anna went to fight against the secession and lost.

Santa Anna is considered the worst leader of Mexico and it's usually blamed for the loss of those territories.

You are welcome

Mexico is a large country and it's hard to generalize. While I'm sure Travelin fella is speaking truthfully about his view of race relations (and I believe his experiences stem from Mexico City- correct me if I'm wrong) they are 100% the opposite of what I saw in Mexico.

The two poorest states in Mexico are the two southernmost and two "darkest"- Oaxaca and Chiapas. As an American studying in Oaxaca, I felt like I was pretty dark for a white person and often got mistaken as Latina in the States. Because of my light skin, I was often targeted there as someone who had money because quite frankly, the lighter your skin the richer you were more often than not. All of our host families who lived in the nice parts of town and were wealthy enough to have an extra bedroom and bathroom for a host student were obviously from a more European heritage than the average population of the city. The elite was almost entirely white- or at least strongly of European desent- in the city which is sad considering that Mexico's first indigenous president was from Oaxaca.

In terms of social segregation, in Oaxaca I saw this most often with where they would shop. The big shopping centers and malls where almost entirely white whereas the small neighborhood outdoor market and the big Sunday market was almost entirely indigenous/mestizo (and tourists :P). The sterile environment of an American style supermarket seemed to only draw those wishing to portray themselves as a certain social class.

Mexico City seems to be less divided in terms of race. Race is not as large of a determinant of what social class you can attain as compared to Oaxaca. There also are large Lebanese and Jewish populations in Mexico City, most of whom live in the wealthier neighborhoods. For 3 days I lived in what is considered Mexico City's biggest slum, Santo Domingo, and absolutely thought it was my favorite part of the city and far from a slum at all. There was a big racial mix- my host family had green and hazel eyes for instance while the next door neighbor looked very dark. I only stayed in Mexico City for a week so my experiences there are much more limited.

I have a friend who sometimes gets confused for being a Latina even though she is not Latina at all. She is half German and half Roma Gypsy. So by U.S census bureau standards she is considered White.

For us as mexicans there is not importance on the race but in your social status. No matter if you´re white, mestizo, indigenous or black, if you dont have money you will be that part of the population to wich is more difficult to access to opportunities.

To everyone answering- can you please state where your experiences in Mexico are from? Again, my experiences in the South are completely different el inombrable. Not that either of us is wrong, it's just different depending on where you are and I'd be interested in seeing from where all the perspectives are coming from.

I thought so too, and I thought in deleting the post for trolling, but I thought it was a better idea to give him a shot of reality to burst his dellusional bubble After all this user has came under similar names several times to promote his white supremacist agenda, has been banned and comes back if he wants attention and affection why not giving him some?
