Training for recycling in Bo, Sierra Leone

Last October Sophie van den Berg gave a unique training workshop in Bo. She brought two handicraft experts with her and trained more than 45 people in handicrafts of recyclable materials. The two experts are from The Better Future Factory and G-lish Foundation. The three taught six technologies, all new in Bo: small scale paper recycling, cutting used beer bottles into candle holders and glasses, making bracelets out of soda-can-tabs, 2 types of small-scale plastic recycling and producing baskets out of plastic bags and textile scrap.
The participants were very enthusiastic and the Facebook page of the project in Bo, regularly shows newly developed products based on the technologies taught.
Sophie van den Berg has blogged on this workshop on her linkedin page

Incubator leads to 2 start- ups via the VIA online Innovation Challenge

The Challenge was open to entrepreneurs from Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda and South Sudan.
An intense six week accelerator taking 8 innovative water and sanitation startups from 4 countries in Africa to a pilot proposal stage. Two startups from the programme, both supported by WASTE experts, already secured funding. All entrepreneurs are ready for next steps.
The challenge was organised under the VIA Water, a programme hosted by UNESCO-IHE and funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with incubator manager Africa Funded . It consisted of an intense six week accelerator taking 8 innovative water startups from 4 countries in Africa to a pilot proposal stage.

The two initiatives that already received funding are:
Trace Group provides waste collection services in Nakuru since 2012. They are looking into matching the solid waste problem in Kenya with the high demand for construction materials and reducing water pollution issues.
Sanivation is currently delivering household sanitation services to urbanizing communities. They install container-based toilets inside people's homes for free, charge a monthly subscription for waste collection, and transform collected waste into charcoal briquettes.

Continuation WASH

The WASH programme (2011-2015) has received an extension from our funder, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The programme in which 6 Dutch organisations and over 80 partners in 7 countries have formed the WASH Alliance International (WAI) has now the possibility to continue to work on sustainable access to water and sanitation.

Partners of WAI in Uganda, Kenya, Mali, Ghana, Benin, Bangladesh and Kenya will continue their contribution to the SDG Goal ‘Access to water and sanitation for ALL’ with a focus on accelerating  WASH service delivery.

Changes at WASTE

After nearly 35 years working with fixed staff  of the foundation WASTE, we have decided to alter our way of working. To keep up with changes in the opportunities in funding of big waste and sanitation programmes, it proves necessary to become more flexible.
To make this possible we have decided to form a cooperation that offers their services to the foundation WASTE. By taking this road we will be able to continue to carry out the vision and mission of WASTE.
