Brexit is already taking its toll on the British consumer, with a supermarket skirmish over Marmite and an extra £300 quietly added to the price of an Apple Mac computer. In the chill of the new year, retail experts warn, there will be plenty more to come.

With sterling having fallen by almost 20 per cent since Britain voted to leave the EU, companies are grappling with how best to deal with their increased costs and eroded margins.

Morrisons put up the price of Marmite by 12.5 per cent to £2.64 yesterday, weeks after a public spat between Tesco and Unilever. Asda has reduced the price to £2.50.
