ECT Parrot fashion

A young man came to see me a few weeks ago and was asking why preachers contradicted each other and often themselves. I listened to a sermon he'd heard and was able to tell him that the preacher didn't understand most of the words he was using. He was simply repeating words he'd heard or had read.
I then explained what the words actually meant and he could see by the context in which they were used that the preacher was truly in the dark.

He then said something that was so simple and so obviously correct that it hit home at once...PARROT FASHION.

Why do people use words
they do not truly comprehend
that they have no experience of
and yet pretend to have wisdom
and authority over the word?
The glory and richness of a word
is found in the root or as a pearl
within a shell waiting to be found.
What did it mean when first used?
What did people understand
when they first heard it?
The Egg said, ''words mean what I want
them to mean and nothing more''.
That proud old Egg fell from a great height.

Take a very large pan of boiling water
and throw in the contents of a shopping bag.
Meat, fish, eggs, milk, jelly, fruit, butter, biscuits, cakes,
soups of various kinds and gently heat.
In doing this you will have prepared food
but nothing edible, nothing enjoyable
and nothing worthwhile.
So does the man who throws words
onto a page without the slightest comprehension.
He speaks, he writes and even debates, parrot fashion.

great topic
I call it parroting
just repeating what you have heard
or
just quoting the bible
and
not really understanding what you say

This message is hidden because chrysostom is on your ignore list.

The reason I have you on ignore is simple. There is nothing you have to say that I want to hear. That is nothing by which I would profit in any way. There is nothing that I have to say that you can hear.

If ever I answer one of your posts, as I did earlier, its because I came in without signing on.

I understand that
there was a time I had over 70 on my ignore
and
I did it to protect myself

now there is no one on my list
I am better able to control myself

Most of TOL is on your ignore list, according to you. Better idea: post a list of TOL users who are NOT on your ignore list and are free to reply to you.

As it is, you are treating TOL like your personal blog and you're going to rile up the mods sooner or later.

Have you ever thought why there so many clichés that most protestants use?

It is my turn to ask you questions, brother.

yes I do think about it

they obviously want to quote passages from the bible
but
they only quote those that support what they want to believe
they want to believe no work is required
they want to believe that they are saved
they want to believe they don't sin
they want to believe they have been chosen or elected
and
therefore it doesn't matter what they do
many seem to be running away from obligation or duty
the most dangerous is obviously not believing in free will

Yes, unfortunately they won't admit these simple truth and making simple gospel complicated to justify their delusional faith.

And this kind of gospel is misrepresenting Jesus to the world which is a grave sin.

Jesus is God
why is that not simple truth?
and
who is misrepresenting Jesus?

Couldn't agree with you more... at least for now... for tomorrow one of us will parrot something the other will point out only to meet with the same old parroting rationale over "You know what; your right; thanks for that!"

The direction this thread has taken only par for the parrot's normal course, lol

But, yeah, there is much to be said for the how behind how "the sense" of any "word" is actually arrived at.

The meta how...
