- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseStrings of platitudes, cliches and bromides. Poorly written, with no evidence of basic spelling and grammar proofreading. Sorry, I really wanted to enjoy this book. But author, if you value the story you have to tell and the information you wish to share, it deserved more effort.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseHeads up: This book is a guide hidden within a guide. It serves two sets of hikers, beginning with the hesitant hiker in the title.
For a hiker who self identifies as being anxious about the realities of hiking (meticulous planning, packing, navigating, animal encounters, trail hygiene, to name a few) Sarah Tiedemann provides a “been there and survived” guide. She describes her past challenges with a clear eye and a strong voice.
What I like best is how she outlines probable scenarios associated with hiking and travel, but also provides Relief sections with strategies that have worked for her on past trips. Especially if you’re a newbie, take this advice to heart.
This book will also validate your feelings if you are a hesitant adventurer. You come to trust Sarah’s insights, because she holds nothing back. Chances are, she is describing your own emotions.
Now for the hidden guide, for those of us who are not hesitant hikers. To use myself as a reference point, I have very little hesitation on a hiking trip to get muddy, wet, cold, exhausted, temporarily lost, and bug bitten (things Sarah describes her reaction to in the book). Thus, it was enlightening to be granted access inside the head of someone who is worried about these things well in advance of their occurrence.
If your trail buddies are anxious or hesitant, this guide will shine a bright headlamp on what it’s like to experience the trail as a source of worry and stress. Her words have made me really think about why people do what they do on the trail, using this novel (to me) perspective.
Sarah has a rock solid hiking partner in her husband, one who makes room for her style of hiking but also advocates for some adventure. She, in turn, challenges herself repeatedly to go beyond what she defines as comfortable. Reading about how they make this interesting dynamic work for them was a highlight for me.
So regardless of which type of hiker you are, read this book for a glimpse into how one hiker faces, and conquers, her fears. Then apply her tips and advice to your own trail time. Or offer her good advice to your favorite hesitant hikers, enabling them with some tools to face unknown -and enticing- hiking trails.
