By and By I must say this book is one of the best I have read. You really see O blossom into a new woman. If you don't already know this is a very very VERY sexual book. Its got its fair share of abuse on women but in a sexual manner.dome people could get offended if they didn't understand. The woman who wrote this book did a beautiful job at describing what the character goes through. One would think it was her own story as if she is writing from memory instead of from imagination.

I know this book has been classified as erotic but I feel this is wrong. For me it is a story about a girl who is so desperate for love that she will do anything to get it. Sadly the men she picks to love know nothing about love. All they know is how to abuse and degrade someone who has placed their welfare in their hands.

The story made me sad to think someone could be so needy and desperate they would subject themselves to such horrible treatment. It also made me sad to think there are so many people who would prey upon such desperation. The last sentence put the icing on this sad tale "O, seeing that Sir Stephen was about to leave her, said she would prefer to die. Sir Stephen gave her his consent." How awful.

This story was beautifully written. The language created such a visual without being written in an over sexualized manner. But even more than that was the manner with which the main character O was portrayed - strong and secure in who she is as a woman yet very vulnerable and longing to be loved and accepted. I must say I hate how she allowed herself to be used and objectified. In some ways she disappeared so that she could be seen. This book put a new spin on the world of BDSM for me. Buy the book, you will love it.

If you want a hardcore S and M novel that is not so much written as a sexual aid but more as a serious work of art that will make you question your proclivities and behaviors, this is the standard. If you want something trashy and repetitive and boring but good as a sexual "aid," read something like Carrie's Story.

I've read some nicely naughty adult books before and heard this one was great. I'd call it an "intro" book. It's mostly about being emotionally and physically "owned" and about pain. Not much time spent on erotica outside of those items. I found other books to be much more erotic because they went into detail about touching, licking, tasting, penetrating, etc. I was underwhelmed by this book. Try the sleeping beauty trilogy by Anne Rice instead!

I had bought this book years ago and it was a real turn on. Much to my dismay, I lent it to someone who did not give it back. Therefore, I had to replace it as the story is that good. If you are a kinky woman/man, this book will suit you just fine. It is a book to squirm by.

Classic hardcore lit. I had to study a lot of it when I was writing the House of Pain Trilogy. It helped steer me towards my characters' voices and away from what had already been done. Not everybody's cup of tea, but like I said, a Classic. I actually preferred the Marquis de Sade, Crimes of Love, though for really twisted plots. The Story of O was written back in 1954 as a series of love letters from Anne Desclos (using the pen name, Pauline Reage) to her lover Jean Paulhan. It was written on a dare when Anne knew her lover was fascinated with stories written and published by Marquis de Sade. When she said she could write something similar, her lover rebuffed her saying no woman could ever understand this type of writing.

When she did write those love letters, her lover was so impressed that he told her she must write this as a novel and then sent it to a publisher for printing. When it was first published it received scant attention until it started receiving literary awards in 1955.

As for the novel itself it is interesting to see a woman who is completely dominated by men and totally submits to every torture and barbarism that is thrown at her.

For O, in her mind, she is doing this to please her lover and to show him how much she loves him. Even when eventually he turns her over to his friend, Sir Stephen, to be her new master, she still believes that her lover still loves her and does everything that Sir Stephen tells her to do.

This is a story of a woman utterly and in complete submission to men. She has no control over her life except as it's being control by other men. What she wears, who she associates with, how she comports herself in public. O submits to everything without question. Even in finally being branded with Sir Stephen's initials and forced to wear labia piercings.

This novel is a far cry from the novels of today where women are a lot more empower and question the motives of the dominant men in their lives.

Because of the time period it comes as no surprise that O would willingly submit totally to absolute torture and complete control of herself.

Not for the squeamish and the faint hearted.

I was reading Shades of Grey and someone suggested this book as further exploration. I read it with interest but could not relate, even in my wildest imagination, to someone's actual acquiesence to such treatment. I was a very well written book.
