Hoping to stop the unauthorized distribution of millions of academic papers, academic publisher Elsevier filed a complaint against Sci-Hub and several related sites last year.

.

While Sci-Hub is nothing like the average pirate site, it is just as illegal according to Elseviers legal team, which obtained a preliminary injunction from a New York District Court last fall.

.

The injunction ordered Sci-Hubs operator to quit offering access to any Elsevier content, but this didnt happen. Instead of taking Sci-Hub down, the lawsuit and the associated media attention only helped the site grow.

.

However, as part of the injunction Elsevier is able to request domain name registrars to suspend Sci-Hubs domain names. This happened to the original .org domain earlier, and a few days ago the Chinese registrar Now.cn appears to have done the same for Sci-hub.io.

.

The domain name has stopped resolving and is now listed as reserved according to the latest WHOIS info. TorrentFreak reached out to Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan, who informed us that the registrar sent her a notice referring to a complaint from Elsevier.

.

Elbakyan was also quick to add that several backup domain names are still in play, including Sci-Hub.bz and Sci-Hub.cc. This means that the site remains accessible to those who update their bookmarks.

.

Sci-Hub is an online repository of over 51,000,000[1] scientific academic papers and articles,[2] available through its website. New papers are uploaded daily after accessing them through .edu proxies.[3] Founded by Alexandra Elbakyan from Kazakhstan in 2011, it began as a reaction to the high cost of research papers behind paywalls, typically US$30 each when bought on a per-paper basis.[4] Academic publisher Elsevier has in 2015 filed a legal complaint in New York City alleging copyright infringement by Sci-Hub.[5]

Sci-Hub is providing science publishers with their Napster moment

A report from Science shows that academic paper piracy site Sci-Hub is not a niche product catering to cheapskates and isolated mad scientists: Its as popular as it is illegal, and its millions of users span the globe, from Tehran to Boston.

.

For those not aware, Sci-Hub is, in the X for Y startup lingo of our days, The Pirate Bay for research. Millions of papers, many of which require a fee or institutional subscription of some kind to access, have been downloaded in full and added to the Sci-Hub database. You can get just about any paper you want with a few keystrokes  and, naturally, publishers are furious.

.

Alexandra Elbakyan, the young Kazakh grad student who founded Sci-Hub in 2011, provided Science reporter John Bohannon with six months of usage data  which, incidentally, the journal is kindly providing for anyone to download themselves.

.

The stats, which have been scrubbed of personally identifying information, are impressive: There are more than 50 million papers stored, with between 4 and 6 million downloaded a month. There are users on every continent but Antarctica

Piracy site for academic journals playing game of domain-name Whac-A-Mole
Just like The Pirate Bay, Sci-Hub is domain hopping to beat takedown court orders.

We reported a few weeks ago on a popular pirate site for science journals whose oversees admin was being sued by one of the world’s leading academic publishers, Elsevier. Elsevier is the same New York publisher that the late Aaron Swartz had noted in his “Guerilla Open Access Manifesto” that told academics and researchers they had a “duty” to free the knowledge they were privileged to read behind Elsevier’s paywall.

.

Because of the lawsuit, which Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan has refused to participate in, she’s been engaged in a game of domain-name Whac-A-Mole in response to Elsevier winning court orders demanding the shuttering of the popular site’s domain name. The site allows anybody, not just academics, to access tens of millions of scholastic research articles for free.
