When your child reveals that he or she is attracted to the same sex, how you respond may have a lot to do with your faith. Doesn't the Bible say that's wrong? Will we have to leave our church? Worst of all, you may wonder, "Do I have to choose between my Christian faith and my child?"

Susan Cottrell is a mom who has been there and wants you to know that loving and accepting your gay child does not mean abandoning or even compromising your faith. This is not a book about the politics or morality of homosexuality. This is a book about how to respond with love and support during this vulnerable time for your child. With practical advice and heartfelt encouragement, Cottrell guides readers through the fear and uncertainty Christian parents of LGBTQ children often feel.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book will help any parent who is confused, hurt, afraid, angered, or surprised by their child's coming out. Writing with compassion, wit, and wisdom, Cottrell strikes the perfect balance between sharing her own story and offering gentle guidance so the reader can navigate their own. In an age where we are all adjusting to changing understandings of sexuality, this book will be invaluable to those who want fully to know and affirm all the children they love."--Cynthia L. Rigby, W. C. Brown Professor of Theology at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary

"I can't overstate the importance of this book as it fills the most critical gap in Christian parenting literature: parenting LGBTQ children. I can only imaging that had this book been written earlier, the world would be a little less broken and the church would be more equipped to love our children. This is a book I hope all Christian parents will read-- even the ones who don't think they need to." --Benjamin L. Corey, Author of Undiluted: Rediscovering the Radical Message of Jesus

SUSAN COTTRELL is an international speaker whose TEDx talk has 1.5 million views. OutSmart magazine called her “The Mother of All MamaBears.” The Advocate dubbed her “our favorite affirming matriarch.”

She is a prominent voice for the LGBTQ community and their faith parents who has been featured on ABC’s 20/20, Nightline and Good Morning America, on NBC News Out, and as a contributor on the Our Bible app.

She is a public theologian and through her nonprofit organization—FreedHearts—Susan champions the LGBTQ community and families with her authentic love; and she challenges Christians to love as the foundation of faith.

She spent 20+ years in the nonaffirming Evangelical church, has a Master of Arts in Theological Studies, and served as the Vice-President of PFLAG Austin. Her FreedHearts Blog and YouTube videos have millions of viewers, and her books “Mom, I’m Gay”—Loving Your LGBTQ Child and Strengthening Your Faith; True Colors: Celebrating the Truth and Beauty of the Real You; Radically Included: The Biblical Case for Radical Love and Inclusion; and Be the Love You Want to See in the World are critically acclaimed.

She and her husband Rob have been married for 33 years and have five children, two of whom identify as queer.

“Susan has this fierce, loving, don’t mess with me, Mom vibe.”—Rev Ashley Harness, Auburn Seminary

“What impresses me about Susan is that she’s not someone who argues and strongarms people into seeing things her way. She’s someone who listens and cares for others really well. Her presence challenges Christians who reject our friends in the LGBTQ community to understand the love of God.”—Michael Hidalgo, Lead Pastor, Denver Community Church

Due to my also having a gay child this very informative book continued to reveal the truth about homosexuality and it will become a teaching tool for others whom also have gay children and ESPECIALLY for those whom continue to falsely believe it is a chosen trait.

It's a little leaning to affirming but regardless I highly recommend as people's first book to read on how to come out to family. It preaches love, always. You don't have to agree with everything she says to be able to love your child, and that's the bottom line.
Acceptance and love against a religion that so often preaches of absolute rejection to those who need it most. Jesus didn't turn away the poor and marginalized of his society and neither should we.

Great to help understand how to help others and get help yourself when you are faced with the Church vs. gay family member question. Nice to know I'm not the only one out there entrenched in figuring out how to find love and acceptance.

Excellent down to earth book for parents and other family members who are seeking to have a better relationship with a child who has come out as gay. Also, good for others who work with or just want to have a better understanding of people who are facing challenges in their life just because they have a different sexual orientation than what many consider the norm.

Bad theological book. I thought this book was going to be resourceful to families dealing with this new transition rather trying to tell them what they should really believe.

I was amazed at how blind I was in my previous views. I took on the views of the church…and it’s been a weight lifted off to realize the church may be wrong. God is love and love always comes first!

A fabulous book! Very helpful for dealing with a myriad of struggles in life, not just with LGBTQ children. A must read, especially for church leaders.
