count of BigBand Networks' announced Chinese cable customers to six
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- BigBand Networks, Inc., a
leading provider of broadband multimedia infrastructure for video, voice and
data, today announced the addition of three Chinese customers, Luoyang Radio
and Television Information Network, Lanzhou Radio and Television Information
Network and Wuyang Iron and Steel's Digital TV project, representing over 1
million subscribers between them. These operators plan to utilize the BigBand
BMR(R) (Broadband Multimedia-Service Router) for processing and delivery of
digital video content from their headends. This increases the number of
Chinese customers announced by BigBand Networks during the last year to six,
driven largely by the country's efforts to implement all-digital programming
by 2008.
"BigBand Networks is committed to working closely with Chinese cable
operators as they become global technology leaders through implementation of
the aggressive plan to roll out digital services nationwide," said Richard
Chau, regional vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific of BigBand
Networks. "Our work with these three cable operators exemplifies how BigBand
Networks' platforms and support services can advance China's efforts to become
a truly digital nation."
The three operators plan to use the BigBand BMR to control the line-up of
offerings, collecting a rich variety of programs from multiple sources
including satellite downlinks, terrestrial broadcast feeds and local storage.
The platform is designed to determine which of the accessed programs to carry
in what channel line-ups, and apply RateShaping(R) bit rate adaptation to
maintain video quality while maximizing bandwidth efficiency.
"As we pursue an aggressive timetable for implementation of digital cable
throughout China, it is reassuring to work with BigBand Networks, which is a
proven worldwide leader in these technologies," said Mr. Yang Zhong-hu,
Director, Lanzhou Radio and Television Information Network Ct. Ltd. "The
innovative BigBand BMR provides the control, functionality, flexibility and
reliability required for the current and future needs of the Chinese digital
television market."
