Editorial Reviews

Review

Diane Donovan has been reviewing books for various concerns over the past 35 years. She is the editor of Children's Bookwatch and California Bookwatch, not to mention senior book reviewer for Midwest Book Reviews. She recently read and reviewed 'Far And Yet So Near', Book 3 in the trilogy, The Adventures of Fawn. Here's what she had to say:
Fans of Fawn's process of growth and discovery have a third book to relish in an adventure which continues to challenge the young reindeer with more than seasonal expectations.

Fawn and friends become involved in the Reindeer Games of 1849 when Santa gives his duty as overseer to veterinarian Doctor Mary Weather (Santa's betrothed) and a series of crises evolves, from a health challenge to a blizzard.

Simple black and white drawings illustrate the dilemmas Fawn faces, from reindeer suffering from mindless trances who try to walk off cliffs to the discovery that the reindeer are somehow being controlled. And in the midst of such a crisis rises an added dilemma: will Fawn be sold?

The atmosphere and depth introduced in the prior books expand further with
Far and Yet So Near. Fawn continues her growth process, faces a countdown to another (and possibly very different) Christmas, and faces thieves, reindeer-napping, and the meaning of life when everything changes to where even friends and family fall apart.

Readers of all ages will find that spirit of adaptation, transition, and survival embedded into a read that would at first seem to appeal primarily to children, with its animal friends and Christmas setting.
Far And Yet So Near actually presents many themes suitable for older readers, from innovative and assertive actions, to individual decisions about how to live life and interact with others.

Fawn is the perfect heroine: indecisive, yet wanting to do good and uncertain, yet willing to expand her skills and abilities to help others. Love, loss, and threats to everything Fawn holds dear keep readers involved up to an unexpected conclusion which nicely expands Fawn's growth and abilities.

Anyone looking for a gentle adventure replete with lessons on adaptation and giving will relish Fawn's ongoing evolution, set against the trappings of Santa's world, in a story recommended not just for Christmas; but for all seasons and all ages.

Al E. Boy is an English teacher, originally from Canada, but currently residing in Seoul, South Korea.

    The Review

While the book began with a lot of action and edge of your seat thrills, the novel overall felt much more personal and emotional than the previous novels in the series. The author did a marvelous job of focusing more on the emotional journey of Fawn, her parents, and everyone in Santa’s close-knit circle as they searched for the missing Fawn and fought to survive the initial attack. Along the way Fawn finds herself bonding with a young girl suffering from a terrible illness, and discovers that the two worlds she has lived in, (the human world and the magical world at Santa’s Village), may not be as incompatible as they once believed.

Readers will love delving into this story as characters backstories like the powerful and mysterious Wajic are explored when an old foe from his past comes back to haunt him and his makeshift family. The book also expertly explores Fawn’s journey as she grows up in her months away from her home, and showcases the heartbreaking affects of losing a child both in Comet and Vixen’s narrative and the story of the young girl’s parents whom Fawn has found herself bonding with.

    The Verdict

Overall this was a well written, emotional and magical tale that solidifies the series as a new holiday favorite. An evenly paced read that focuses more on personal storytelling aspects rather than the larger than life magic of past novels, this story felt like the most connected the reader has ever been with Fawn, and brought a whole new element to the series that fans will love. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy of “Far and Yet So Near” by Al E. Boy today!

A mysterious stranger has put all the adult reindeer under his control, as one they walk away to an unknown location and fate. Fawn, Mary, and her friends follow the reindeer and traverse the deadly Hangnail Pass and Wandering Bridge where some are injured. The mysterious man in his attempts to steal the reindeer for profit blows up the cavern with Santa, Wajic, and the reindeer inside! The man manages to steal Fawn and takes her to his home in London where she befriends his terminally ill daughter and brow-beaten wife. It is up to Fawn to save herself and her new friends. Back home, her friends Bunny, White, Snowboy, and others pray for her safe return.
With Santa, Wajic, and the reindeer believed to be dead, Fawn is at a loss as to what will happen to her or Christmas. Like a true and loving reindeer, Fawn is determined to help her new friends and introduce the man to the meaning of Christmas and love!
Al E. Boy once again captures the imagination of his listeners and holds it from beginning to end in a breath-taking adventure. His story is well developed highlighting thoughts, emotions, and questions that many young adults face daily. Boy shows that forgiveness, kindness, and love can overcome so much and be life-changing. He is a masterful wordsmith as his descriptions bring the characters, plot, and emotions to life.
Pam Tsujoika, the narrator, provides a unique voice and cadence to each character that allows the listener to keep focused and clear on who is who. Her voice is soothing as is her cadence. Her voice is rich in tone and injected with the right amount of emotion.
A delightful audiobook that any age would enjoy thoroughly.
There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook. It was well done and crisp.

Far and Yet So Near is the third book in The Adventures of Fawn series and each book keeps getting more and more interesting and more fun to read.

Three books into this series, and I both can’t wait to dive in and can’t believe that Fawn has more adventures ahead! I mean this complimentary of course. I didn’t think when I finished the first book that Boy was going to have 4+ books to this series. Which says something about the way each book is written. I’m not left hanging wondering what’s next. Each story has its own unique arc and allows me to enjoy it itself without forcing me to read the next book. So, when I pick up the next book, it’s because I want to not because I have to.

In this one, Fawn is thrown into another adventure and honestly, I can’t talk much about it since the adventure is most of the story. I think the thing I like the most about these books is that even though I know they’re written for children, I’m certainly enjoying them as an adult. Much like a lot of the Disney and especially the Pixar stories that I grew up watching and now watch as an adult. Each one has a lesson for the children and also lessons for the adults. Sometimes they’re the same and sometimes different. This series is no different. I sit here as an adult and feel just as special as I would as a kid after finishing it.

I had read the first two books and loved them, but the third is my favorite so far. I was already in love with the characters (Fawn, Snowboy, Bunny, and of course Santa!) but this story is so beautiful and heartwarming, very well told, and intriguing from start to finish. It's such a cute story and a must-read for all ages.
