Seven Hills boys take 2nd at state

CANTON - A third consecutive state championship for Seven Hills' boy's team wasn't in the cards this year, as the Stingers ended up second behind Gates Mills Hawken.

Seven Hills didn't win any individual titles either, and they weren't alone. No Cincinnati-area boys won a state championship on Friday night.

Seven Hills was led by sophomore Greg Kalin's third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.48. The Stingers also took third with their 200 freestyle relay and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay. Kalin swam on both relays with Henry Marquardt, Tindar Cyr, Sam Stevens and Nick Purple.

"Definitely a lot to be proud of," said Seven Hills coach Brandon Williams. "We knew going into it, coming up against Hawkens, we knew they were kind of a powerhouse next to us because of the numbers there. It's kind of hard when you only have six individual swimmers."

But, the Stingers are young. Two of their six state qualifiers are sophomores, and Marquardt's the only senior.

The best finishes came from Wyoming's Carson Burt with a runner-up in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:40.20. Burt also took third place in 100 freestyle with a time of 45.94. The Cowboys also had all three of their relays place on the podium -- seventh in the 200 medley, fourth in the 200 freestyle, fifth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Madeira's Chet Dobson swam third in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 500 freestyle.

Fenwick freshman Adam Chaney stormed onto the scene at state with third place in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free.
