Climate Week NYC 2015 is setting the foundation for strong low-carbon leadership and a global social movement for stronger action in response to climate change. During Climate Week, leaders from every sector of society will showcase their initiatives, and demonstrate that together governments and business can build strong economies on low carbon technology and clean energy. This is a key event that brings together governments, leading investors, innovators, and influencers. It will showcase how mobilization and transformational solutions across sectors will take us to a pathway which is environmentally, and socially friendly, but also economically beneficial.
Climate Week is a platform of influence and momentum to inspire ambitious climate action, alongside the new Sustainable Development Goals. It aims to leave decision makers with no doubt that there is overwhelming demand for a global climate deal which will be negotiated at the COP21 climate talks in Paris in December. It will also provide an opportunity during the United Nations discussions on Sustainable Development Goals to demonstrate strong climate action at all levels.
Scaling up the opportunity, it is crucial to call on governments and the international community to create active and dynamic partnerships at all age levels to prevent climate change issues, harness peer power, and facilitate youth’s ability to promote action, offer solutions, and inspire real global change.
To do so, the World Bank Group Youth Summit 2015 is organizing an event on “If Not Us, Then Who: Crowd-Sourcing Solutions for Climate Change” to be held Nov. 16-17, 2015. Scaling up the opportunity from Climate Week, the goal of the summit is to gather exceptional future leaders to tell the story of climate change and inspire communities everywhere to take action. It will crowdsource innovative solutions to tackle the destructive potential of climate change. It aims to cultivate an international understanding among members of the next generation, since it is a long-term process that will impact an infinite number of future generations.
Youth play a critical role in combating climate change, and it is the next generation which inherits the responsibility to protect the planet, in fighting the complex scientific problems and social quandaries presented by climate change and its impacts. Young people are very adaptable, and they can quickly make low-carbon lifestyles and career choices a part of their daily lives. And therefore, it is important to give youth a chance to take an active part in the decision-making process on global, national, and local levels.
