PPPoE in Ubuntu ?

Recommended Posts

I have been a genuine WinXP user for about 3 years now but I think its time to move to Linux. After using many distros, I decided that Ubuntu was the one I need. When I installed it the last time the major problem and the only problem I had was getting Internet started.

I connect to the net using RASPPPoE in windows, and the network has atleast 5 Concentrators, when I installed ubuntu and configured PPPoE it defaulted to using the first one , I think, cause the user name and pass were reported to be incorrect by ubuntu.

I dont have ubuntu installed at the moment but plan to do it soon and want to be prepared for that problem beforehand, can someone tell me how pppoeconf can be used to configure PPPoE. Also I will be getting a new SATA Drive, will it work in Ubuntu, a noobish question, but I need to know.

Also I wanted to see if I could get XGL and compix working, My PC Specs are AMD642800+, ATI9200SE 128MB GFX and 768MB Ram on MSI K8N Platinum, nForce250GB Mobo, is there anything I should know in advance.

Thanks :)

Not sure about the internet thing, but you mgiht have a bit of trouble with your graphics card, ATi's Linux drivers are terrible, so 3D (and therefore XGL) may be a bit of a problem. Your SATA drive should work too.

thanks everyone for the replies, the problem was that my isp uses Access concentrators instead of providing users with dsl or adsl modems. I found tkpppoe, its a gui frontend for rp-pppoe, it allowed me to specify my access cncentrator and now i'm posting this from suse10. :D . My time to BE Free has come. !!!
