Lockheed F-35A Lightning II / Pavel Kohno / 1:72

Not to leave Josh (Sidewinder81777) alone in his craziness, I have started on Pavel's second uber-detailed 5th Generation fighter model. This model is offered at ECardmodels.com Shop in 1:48 scale, which I rescaled down to my favorite 1:72. This kit is incredibly detailed, with over 700 parts - nearly 3 times as many parts as my last Pavel Kohno kit (McDonnell F3H-2 Demon U.S. Navy squadron VF-41 / Pavel Kohno / 1:72). The kit includes 14 pages of 3D diagrams showing the assembly process , which is an enhancement over the line-drawings in the Demon kit. This will likely take many months to complete but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Kit available for sale at Ecardmodels here: 1/48 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II Paper Model - ECardmodels.com Shop - Downloadable models

I have printed this kit out onto 65lb cardstock (5 pages in the reduced scale, including duplicate little fiddly parts, just in case). I also printed a second copy onto normal 20lb bond paper, and an additional framework page on 110lb stock. I've sealed all pages with a couple coats of Krylon Preserve It! gloss spray.

Framework

I start this build beginning with the framework / skeleton for the fuselage, as per the first page of diagrams. This will be the first model I've built that uses this skin-over-framework construction method. At this scale, I printed the framework onto 110lb cardstock, which is not quite as thick as the slots in the framework, but should be more than strong enough once assembled. For the lengthwise pieces, I laminated this 110lb stock to a 65lb card sheet, which brings the thickness to the right dimension, but it's difficult to cut out, so I'm only doing so on certain parts.

Off to a good start:

Looks good Chris. Be interested to see how the skins fit.

Thanks Don, but that sure wasn't fast. Loosely keeping track of time, I'm about 6 hours in already lol.

Me too, I'm concerned that the thickness of the formers won't give a good surface to bond to, so I may add glue strips to each former to give something else for the skin to hold to. I did trim the formers such that the black line was completely removed with this in mind. Much easier to build up on a former already in place than to trim down...

Turbine exhaust nozzle

This is the next section, and one of the most detailed - the exhaust nozzle. It looks like there are 16 segments, each requiring 6 parts, plus the ring to which they all mount. I may simplify this a little...

Looking fantastic! Im going to have to kick it up a notch on my Kohno YF-23 1:72 build. Side by side builds of insanely complex models at masochistically small scales FTW!
