Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Gilman's memoir of growing up on Manhattan's upper Upper West Side in the '70s starts slowly but gathers momentum. Readers who find themselves drifting during Gilman's reveries on lying during show-and-tell will find themselves pleasantly riveted by the time she's getting in touch with her roots as a reporter for the Jewish Week. Gilman, author of 2001's Kiss My Tiara, a women's self-help guide, makes common scenarios fresh with humor and wry social commentary; on the first day of school, she quickly learns "boys might be fighters, but girls could be terrorists." Gilman's ear for dialogue is dead-on. When her brother asks their dad why their Jewish family celebrates Christmas, she doesn't miss a beat: " 'Because your grandmother's a Communist and your mother loves parties,' said my father. 'Now eat your supper.' " These one-liners don't detract, however, from a serious and moving look at one family's efforts to keep itself intact through divorce and other life challenges. After her parents separate, Gilman, then in her mid-20s, fears she and her brother had spent their childhoods in happy oblivion while their parents were "spellbound with misery." Probably not: Gilman's recollections of moving bumpily toward adulthood are keenly observant. She's nicely made the leap from self-help to narrative nonfiction.

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School–Gilman has a gift for showing the humor in the ordinary. Her memoir takes readers from her childhood in the late 1960s and early '70s through adulthood and marriage. As the book opens, she is reminiscing about the summer of 1969 when she was four and her parents took her to a commune where one of their friends was filming a documentary. She got to personify innocence by dancing naked on the beach with other children. Other experiences include the challenges of being the only Jewish girl attending a private Presbyterian school, her mother's enthusiasm for transcendental meditation, and her own infatuation (and ultimate meeting) with Mick Jagger. Set against the backdrop of New York's Upper West Side, her descriptions of the insecurities that plagued her as an adolescent ring with truth. Gilman's narrative illustrates how the highs and lows that mark the teen years are remarkably similar among generations, and suggests that perhaps the gap isn't so wide after all. As she shares some of her adult experiences–career choices, the effects of her parents' divorce after she and her brother were grown, a work-related trip to the Polish concentration camps–her refreshing blend of humor and frankness does not trivialize the significance of her observations. Gilman's is not an extraordinary life, but she offers a view of American culture over the past 35 years that is compelling and highly readable.–Kim Dare, Fairfax County Public Library System, VA

Known for her unique combination of humor and depth, Susan Jane Gilman is the New York Times bestselling author of five books – the nonfiction “Kiss My Tiara,” the memoirs “Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress,” and “Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven,” plus the novels “The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street” and her latest, “Donna Has Left the Building.”

Gilman has written for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Daily Beast, Salon, The Guardian, Real Simple, and Ms. magazine, among others. She been a commentator for National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered," and she has given a TEDx talk on the creative process, “There Is No Lightning Bolt.” Her books have been published in a dozen languages.

She won literary awards for her journalism and short fiction. She was also the recipient of a "Golden Earphones" Award for her Audiobook recording of "The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street."

She once told an interviewer: "I never set out to write books that made people laugh. My main love has always been literary fiction. However, even with my darkest work, people always tell me that parts of it are funny. This used to annoy me because I aspired to be an American Dostoevsky with Breasts.

Yet when I was living in Washington DC, I took a writers’ workshop at the Bethesda Writers’ Center. The first story I submitted was a heartbreaking tale of a man’s addiction, which impressed the class. The second was an absurd story about mistaken identity full of Jews, Rastafarians, lesbians, and dental hygienists. To my great irritation, the class liked this one infinitely more. After class, a man pulled me aside. 'I have to tell you,' he said. 'My wife has been battling breast cancer. I read her your story last night, and it was the first time in two years she really laughed. You’ve got a gift. Please don’t ignore it. Not everyone can make a sick woman laugh in her hospital bed.' That’s when I finally saw the merit in my own, lurking smart-ass and stopped fighting it."

Although she currently resides primarily in Switzerland, her heart and her feet are never far from her hometown of New York City.

Susan Jane Gilman and I are best friends. She doesn’t know it, but we have established a total parasocial relationship. This is the third book of hers I read in a row and am not planning to stop here. She’s incredibly good! Reading her books makes me extremely happy!

Now, I must recognize that Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress may not be a book for every occasion. This is a feel-good book. If you need something to feed your adrenaline addiction, start by “Donna Has Left the Building.”

As a feel-good book, Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress is not a sappy kittens, Jesus, and orphans adorning their mother’s tomb with flowers story while they rescue their estranged father. It is more like a joint and a beer with your best friend while you complain about all the douchebags in the world with big laughs and listen to music from three decades ago. It’s warm, cozy, and “safe” book, in the sense that it makes you feel part of something bigger. It is the perfect book if you’re feeling a little droopy and you just need a friend to make you smile until it hurts and to feel appreciated.

You will enjoy every single line, but Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress is not a page-turner. Every chapter is a self-contained anecdote that you should savor slowly. You will find yourself going back a few pages to reread aloud that paragraph that made you laugh for someone else and never in a hurry to figure out what happens next. You will savor every single page.

You could read this book in a few days or a few months. There’s no rush to finish it. It took me exactly ten days. It is like the Asterix or Lucky Luke comic books you read as a child—for grownups. Silly, yet human, slightly frivolous, and utterly entertaining. Slow books are my favorite books because you can revisit them often and never get bored.

Hypocrite in a Pouffy Dress is very personal. Not personal in the sense that it will make you feel uncomfortable by revealing a little too much, but personal in the sense that you will feel as if you were best friends with the author, therefore my infatuation. As a memoir, the self-deprecating humor reminded me of David Sedaris, but Gilman is never too dry or too melancholic.

Gilman is always positive, without being annoyingly positive, and her self-deprecating jokes are never tiring. Gilman’s drama is often exaggerated; however, the exaggeration works because you understand what she means exactly. When Gilman tells more serious anecdotes, for instance, being beaten up, bullied, or having her heart broken, she turns the story into a funny life lesson you can laugh about.

Finally, while you will recognize Gilman’s marvelous storytelling skills in every one of her books, so far, every book I have read has been very different. No money formulas here. Gilman’s just honest, positively reinterpreting the past, treating her readers as pals, without riddles or overwritten metaphors only a few enlightened will understand. Brava!

I wasn't thrilled in the beginning. Didn't grab me right away. But then I was hooked. I think it was because I didn't realize it was a series of stories that were autobiographical. And interesting. Susan Gilman grew up in NYC on the Upper West Side before it became high rent and trendy. When it was interesting. Her parents aren't perfect, she's not perfect, she is not a heroine, she is not totally ordinary either. She makes you want to know her. This book is a fascinating look into a childhood that is not charmed, but not ordinary either. Some of these stories are funny, some are sad, some are little slices of coming of age. It really is a great read.

You don't have to have lived in New York City, or spent a summer at a bungalow colony, or had hippie parents to enjoy Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress. All you need is a sense of humor and Susan Jane Gilman will take care of the rest. In this laugh-out-loud memoir, Gilman sketches hilarious vignettes of growing up in the 1970s, a child of agnostic Jewish parents who live on NYC's upper west side at a time well before it was cool to do so.

A plump kid who could never quite fit in, the Susie of these stories struggled to make it through adolescence, the high school dating scene and an early writing career, ultimately making it to her own peculiar version of a happy ending. She writes well, liberally sprinkling punch lines throughout this fast and entertaining read.

Here's a sample, on the difference between Judaism and Christianity: "So hold on. Jews have to wait for a messiah and we don't get to celebrate Christmas?" I said. Why did we have to wait? I hated waiting. I could barely wait for the ice cream man. Now I had to wait for some messiah? And all we got was Chanukah? That sucked!

"Forget it," I announced. "Christmas kicks Chanukah's ass. I'm being a Catholic."

If you are looking for something light to lift your spirits, yet want something more substantial than a simple thriller or romance novel, this book is for you.

There's an undeniable trend in memoirs and in first-person memoir-like novels by, about and usually for women where the flavor is more than a little self-deprecating. (Think Brigit Jones Diary). In some work this blatant self-loathing can seem contrived, peppered in to hide the flavor of an otherwise arrogant, irreverent, and self-absorbed protagonist; however, while Susan Jane Gilman can come across as all of the above in her memoir, `Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress," in no way is any of it contrived. It's real. It's brutally honest, laugh-out-loud funny and very original. I enjoyed reading every page of this well-crafted collection.

The chapters read like long columns--better yet, like short stories. Her tales start with a premise, ramble on so that you don't exactly know where they're going but you are nonetheless thoroughly entertained, and then BAM! She brings you right back to the point and leaves you smiling. I particularly enjoyed the tale about Mick Jagger and the congresswoman named "Minnie." I believe, however, her true character was revealed through "Picnic at Treblinka," where she tells the story of a week in Poland (as a reporter for The Jewish Week) visiting concentration camps--true character, by the way, that wasn't even remotely hypocritical.

I recommend this book and look forward to reading more by this talented author.
