This fall, our community went through a wonderful book study using Emily Bazelon's STICKS AND STONES. Throughout the conversations, this question kept popping up: WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP PROMOTE EMPATHY? I've decided to provide a space for you to help whether you were part of the book club or not: a compilation of non-fiction stories throughout our community showcasing the power of empathy.
But, why a book? Why this?
-to tell stories of empathy throughout all corners of the community because stories are the best teachers
-to put focus on empathy in order to provide social power to POSITIVE action and to showcase it in its many forms
-to be a road map for other communities
-to create an action list which we can quickly access
-to remind our community's students (and all of us, really) that others have gone through similar situations
-to continue the conversation
Now, some details. There are no promises that your submitted story will be used in the print version of the book. You should know that all names in each story (except for the author's unless you ask) may be changed.
Deadline: April 15, 2014
Finally, this: Don't see yourself as an author? That's the expectation. This isn't about being an author. This is about having a story. Just focus on that. TELL THE STORY.
