- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2024I’ll be honest… I bought this because I saw a Facebook post making fun of a scene and had to see if that was warranted. Yes, the scene in the post was comical - although taken completely out of context; but the book itself was a very good read and I’m glad I bought it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2015Love Giles, Love Million Dollar Review! Really wanted to love this book but it's pretty much unreadable. I read a lot, a wide variety but just couldn't get through this. :-(
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2019I thought I would like this. Giles Coren should not write fiction. He's better at editorials.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2021Everyone knows that straight men cannot write erotica. Don't bother reading this gibberish.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2021Apparently my review didn't make it past the Amazon censors despite following all the guidelines, so here is take two. I can sum up my review of the book as such: If a writer such as Coren can get an advance and get published, when he writes a 138 word, run-on sentence about s*x, somehow gets the workings of a p*n*s incorrect (despite being male), plus gives an incorrect number of limbs to one of the participants he is writing about; then that gives hope to the rest of us that we might actually get published. "Like Zoro." Yes, the run-on sentence I wrote was intentional sarcasm toward the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2024What did I just read? The grammar, the run on sentences, how did this get published? Coren doesn't deliver in Winkler. This would make a good gag gift for someone.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2021I'd give this "novel" zero stars. Absolutely nonsensical, desperately under-edited trash.

4.0 out of 5 stars Partly brilliant
Parts of this were brilliant. Some of the angry rants were hilarious but the cruel humour although witty left a bad taste. At times when he set off on a diatribe, I wasn't always sure whose point of view it was. The part when he visited his Grandpa was confusing. I could not work out if it was his Grandpa's voice or Winkler's voice or Winkler's opinion of what his Grandpa thought. I am probably not bright enough to work these things out, but those stream of consciousness parts were confusing.
There were things that Winkler did that were difficult not to judge harshly - the blind girl / television incident and the woman pushed for being overweight. The way he talked or thought about his girlfriend was really hard to read. Why was he with her if he felt that way about her? Eventually he speaks fondly of her but only in so much as he feels he won't be able to get better or sustain a relationship with a sexier woman.
Sometimes this book was too brutally honest. I would rather not have known some of Winkler's thoughts, but I did enjoy some of the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book will horrendous tut.
A woeful crock'o'sh*te.
Who is Giles Coren and what business does he have "authoring" books‽

4.0 out of 5 stars A damn good read
I bought this partly because Amazon recommended it when I purchased Anger Management, and partly because I am a fan of Giles Coren's work - and I am so glad I did!
It is not a light read for the faint hearted, in fact at times it can be almost disturbing. I read it one night when I couldn't sleep and it certainly didn't have a soporific effect, conversely I ended up glued to it from midnight to seven in the morning when I had to stop to get ready for work!
It is quite a ride through the thoughts, actions and urges of Winkler, the main character, whom I trust is only semi autobiographical! I found it fascinating, gross, sad, thought provoking, evocative, guilt inducing and I could go on. It is never less than entertaining though.
Definitely recommended, though not remotely suitable as a Christmas present for Granny!
