How To Build Big-Inch Mopar Small Blocks Paperback – January 1, 2005

4.6 out of 5 stars 157 ratings

Now there's another way to get more horsepower: boring and stroking your Mopar small-block to get more cubic inches - up to 476 cubes! The small-block Mopar is one of the easiest engines in which to increase displacement without extensive modifications or specialized machine work - the engine was practically designed for more cubes! This book shows you how to get that big-cube power, and then it shows you how to optimize the small-block's other systems - induction, heads, valvetrain, ignition, exhaust, and more to make the most of the extra cubic inches. Author Jim Szilagyi is a Performance Specialist for Dodge Motorsports and Mopar Performance Parts. In this book he covers building big-inchers from Mopar 318/340/360 -ci LA or Magnum 5.2-/5.9-liter engines, using both factory and aftermarket parts. If you want to make big power from your Mopar small-block, this is the book for you!

Jim Szilagyi worked at Chrysler from 1989 to 2009, and spent several years developing high performance and racing parts in the Mopar Performance Parts, Dodge Motorsports, and SRT groups. Many of these parts were used in "Grass Roots" racing programs like the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series, USAC Sprint Cars and Midgets, and World of Outlaws Sprint Cars. The author and his co-workers at Mopar developed many of the (Mopar) high performance and stroker engine parts shown in this book.

Jim moved to JEGS High Performance in 2009 and spent the next 6 years developing private label branded HP and racing products for JEGS.

In 2016 Jim joined Holley Performance Products as a Sr Merchandizing Manager responsible for commercializing new products and website organization & content for select brands.

This book is written by an accomplished racer and he has demonstrated a wealth of knowledge. He shares photos and facts that previously had been only myth's. Any person building a small block Mopar engine needs this book, stock or race versions, both can benefit from the information. Great photos and complete parts lists of engines, this book leaves no guessing. When I heard about it I ordered it that night, I'm happy I did and highly recommend it. Jeffco

i am real happy with this guide. i am mot a certified mechanic, but i have been teaching myself everything about auto mechanics for a couple of years now starting with how an engine works, what makes power, what hurts power. i feel ready to dig into my first projects. my engine may not look as good as the one on the cover of the book, but i feel confident that with this book as a guide i can improve the hp and tq on my 5.9L 360 exponentially. there is no reason your first build using this book as a guide as well as a good level of trust with your machinist you cant build the small block screamer that you are dreaming of.

Good read. Only downside is now I want to build a 408 stroker, but I don't have an appropriate vehicle to put one in - I can light up the rear end on my truck on dry pavement with the stock 5.9L, and my Jeep doesn't have the drivetrain to support that much HP/torque. I'm still going to build one, though, as this book guides you step-by-step through the part selection process, with excellent explanations, including pros and cons of each option. Has predesigned builds at the end of the book with part numbers if you don't want to do your own research/design. After reading this, I am confident I could pick up a junkyard 5.9L Magnum and build a 400+HP engine.

This book is NOT for a beginner! I have been building small block Mopars for 40 years, so this is one of my automotive Bibles. The last few years has seen a major move to milk every last ounce of horsepower from the smaller engines that Mopar (Chrysler) makes. This started when it just got too expensive to build a Big-Block, or a Hemi, so the small block, with a little magic from Mr. Szilagy, become big inch monsters. When an RB big block won't fit into your small engine compartment, you pick up Mr. Szilagy's book and learn how to make your wimpy little 360 (5.9L) engine into a 440 (7.2L) monster that will still fit into your small engine compartment.

Some very worthwhile info and up to date. Contains content concerning all small blocks that I have not seen in any other how-to or repair manuals. Wish this was available before I started my own 416 project some years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good amount of info on various Mopar small block combinations!
Reviewed in Canada on February 3, 2013
A decently updated book on the Mopar SB engine combinations. A great amount of detail included, but sometimes it feels a bit like a 'recipe' book as opposed to a well discussed design and considerations book. Not that it's a bad thing, but if you expect a ton of technical know-how with the underlying proof of why one option is better then the other, this book will most likely not deliver.

Still, a great Mopar reference, a must-have for any SB guy out there! You can't go wrong with this buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overall, but dated.
Reviewed in Canada on August 7, 2020
Overall the book is fairly good and has some good information, but lots of the examples regarding parts and vendors are really old as the book is 15 years old and things change. So general theories and technical information is good, but it could use an update.
