Wellstone was leading his Republican opponent by 9 points in the latest
Zogby Poll. Conveniently for the Repugs, his wife was on board the plane,
so she can't replace him like Carnahan's wife did.
The plane was manufactured by Raytheon.

EVELETH, Minnesota (CNN) -- Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone, his wife and a
daughter died Friday in a small plane crash near Eveleth, Minnesota,
Democratic sources said.
The sources said three staff members and two crew members also died in the
crash.
The plane went down in a wooded area about seven miles east of
Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport. Officials said bad weather was reported
in the area, and the last contact with the plane was at 10:20 a.m. when the
plane was about two miles from the Eveleth airport.
Wellstone held a key Democratic seat in the U.S. Senate and had been
criss-crossing the state in a tough re-election campaign against former St.
Paul Mayor Norm Coleman.
The plane, a twin-engine turboprop King Air manufactured by Raytheon
Aircraft, took off from Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie, a southwestern
suburb of Minneapolis. He was scheduled to attend a funeral in the
northeast, followed by a campaign stop in Duluth.
Wellstone, 58, won his Senate seat in 1990, the only challenger that year to
unseat an incumbent.
The son of Russian immigrants, Wellstone was raised in Arlington, Virginia,
and was a champion wrestler at the University of North Carolina in Chapel
Hill, where he earned both a bachelor's degree and a doctorate.
Wellstone was a champion of health care coverage expansion and environmental
concerns, and was considered by many to be one of the Senate's most liberal
members.

Do you have anything worthwhile to talk about today?
Why don't you go back to correcting our spelling errors?
Although I live in Washington State, I had a great deal of respect for
Wellstone. However, it is as certain as church services on Sunday that
Democrats are going to blame Republicans (it has already happened on this
thread) and Greens, just as Republicans are going to accuse the Democrats of
eliminating a weak candidate and replace him a la Toricelli (it has already
happened on this thread.) Very few of the real power brokers on any side are
going to step back and genuinely mourn, which is where the real shame is
found.
That's correct. Minnesotta law allows the chairman of the Democratic party
to appoint a replacement candidate up to four days before the election.

The "Slime" are the Dems here who immediately started to blame Bush for
making Wellstone's plane crash.
But since they belong to your party, they're allowed to act like slime, eh?

You are one ignorant son-of-a-whore.
Washington - It was Condoleezza Rice, national security advisor, who helped
her boss out of the embarassing situation. During a conversation between the

(Brazil), Bush bewildered his colleague with the question "Do you have

Having lost my older brother (age 41) and older sister (age 42) and father
in a 4 year time span, I realize that death is not something to trivialize
by playing politics.. While Senator Wellstone and I would probably agree on
nothing politically, everyone should take the time to realize he was a human

of people.
Hopefully this is something all of us can keep in the back of our minds as
we fight our daily battles here in the groups.

Back up a minute. You guys see what's going on here? This is our future
talking. Are you proud of it? This is why so many honorable people are
getting out of politics. I predict that in 10 years, maybe less, if this
continues, our country will be run by nothing but vile mouthed, punks with
no interest, no clue and no concern for what is best for the country, but
instead, just who can get the last sleazy comment in.
It's sick and you guys should wake up and demand better from your peers. You
should let them know they are not in the mainstream by ignoring their
remarks. You should complain to their isp because if you look, they are in
fact violating the terms of their use agreement. This kind of stuff is not
"debate" it is filth of the lowest caliber and you young people that have
some dignity, should not allow yourselves to be tainted by accepting the
behavior of those of lesser integrity than you. Wake up!

I agree.
And the fact that his wife and daughter were killed too, makes this
tragedy doubly sad.
It's too bad that we can't hold off on the conspiracy theories and
political spinning--ON BOTH SIDES--until at least the funeral services
are concluded.
There are people on both sides of the political spectrum here in the groups
that are without pity or humanity. But I'm sitting here listening to the
remarks of people like Bob Dole, Trent Lott, John McCain and other
republicans who liked and respected Paul Wellstone and who are grieving
right now along with democrats over this senseless death.
I will always give credit to anyone who expresses remorse at the death of
another human being. Death cuts through politics.

Jesse couldn't possibly appoint someone more anti-republican and
anti-Bush policies (and anti-Iraq war) than Paul Wellstone - all he
could possibly do would be to appoint maybe a republican, thereby
shifting the balance in the Senate. But that's extremely unlikely,
and even if he did, the guy would only be Senator for a short
lame-duck session where not much is going to get done. It's not like
Wellstone was a swing vote on anything pending.

I just saw Jesse on TV saying that he MIGHT appoint someone, although
he said this wasn't the time or place to even think about it, but the
only question he did answer, directly and emphatically, was that he
would NOT appoint himself.
The last Minnesota Governor who appointed himself Senator dropped off
the public and political charts like a rock.
Wham Bam, Thank You Saddam: http://www.mp3.com/SemiScholar
Precisely. I've been sitting here for the last hour listening to tributes
to Wellstone from prominent republicans and democrats. Pete Domenici was so
choked up he couldn't even speak. This is just a senseless death...a
tragedy. It's not about politics. Anyone who honestly believes that
Wellstone's death isn't a matter of grief to everyone from Bush on down to
the staffers in the Senate is just blinded by politics.
And that's sad.

Thank you and accept mine in return. My brother and sister passed away
before my father, I was witness to his pain, so have some insight into
yours. Children just aren't supposed to go before their parents.

I think of that every day. It should have been me. But I'm horrified when

Why bother? Anyone who comes up with a hundred posts to the group blaming
the republicans for Wellstone's death when there have been maybe a hundred
posts total on the subject, doesn't need to look for a lie any place other
than in his own dark soul.
Cite these hundred posts to the group or go back to chewing on your hatred

Washington - It was Condoleezza Rice, national security advisor, who helped
her boss out of the embarassing situation. During a conversation between the
two presidents, George W. Bush, 55, (USA) and Fernando Henrique Cardoso, 71,

Talk about a bunch of nuts scrambling to rewrite history!!
If the US voters change the senate because of the republican drivel about
the
US problems caused by the Senate, they deserve the depression and the
removal
of rights that will follow a one-party, unbalanced, checkless government
American voters may well play into AlQaida's plan to end the evil empire of
the
US of having the scared rabbits vote to change America by selling their
rights
to greedy opportunists in exchange for protection of their goods, and put
right
wing nut cases in control of all branches of government unfettered, and to
let
the US then fall from within.
The US strength was its willingness to help - its weakness was its belief
that
strength came from materials - and its enemies know how the cobra cripples
the

Which Dems specifically blamed Bush for Wellstone's death, Craig?
Do you ever get tired of lying?

I heard there were some F-16s in the area

What did Bush know and when did he know it?
Or was it the Reagan tax cuts of 1986 that did it...
I hear where you're coming from, but I believe we have to have faith in the
best in human nature even if we're forced to plan for the worst. There has
to be someplace at which we are willing to give the benefit of a doubt. If
not the tragedy of human death, then where will that place be?
There are individuals in these groups that I would not trust under any

In *life*. Death is inevitable and immutable. There is nothing
remotely distinctive about it, which is precisely the opposite
condition of *living*, which is the thing about which each and every
individual human being has not only a choice, but an actual
responsibility. It is perfectly ridiculous to respect a person simply
because he died.
And I'll never shed a tear over Wellstone. The man was a common
fool, risen to uncommon prominence. He should have committed himself
to a life of honest work.

i do too, but....
>Death cuts through politics.
well, it should, ideally, i suppose. but i honestly think this is a
bit of deferential ingenuousness. the reality is that politics cuts
through every value known to humanity, and leaves them eviscerated on
the floor. lets face it, the right >>must<< show sympathy...otherwise
it would be harmful to their elections. call me callous for saying
so, and i am, but so are politicians. i don't trust a crocodile tear
coming from lott, dole, limbaugh or any of the others. they are all

I basically agree with you. I wouldn't go so far as to rat on anyone. I can
tolerate some salt in people's language. It's not the language that bothers me.
It's the spin reflex, the unconscious reaction to turn every piece of news into
political spin that justifies one's own beliefs and demonizes one's opponents'.
Scott Erb, I think, talks about the essential likeness of both sides in the
American political system--though unlike the Greens' complaint about the
Republicrats, he doesn't think this is necessarily a bad thing, just an
overlooked and underappreciated thing. I believe he thinks the American
political parties are about an inch apart, but that little inch seems to us like
a canyon. It certainly is difficult for me to see Paul Wellstone and Jesse Helms
as being less than a canyon apart. Nevertheless, there is something about
American politics that turns us vicious around the littlest differences we have
with one another. And that's a sickness with us. That's what makes us believe
our leaders are not just incompetent boobs but evil contractors with the devil.
I myself can't get over this feeling entirely about George Bush and the Bush
family, to be honest with you. But I hope I'll show the class that some
conservatives in these groups have shown toward Democrats for their loss. And
I'm grateful for the little pauses in the political wars, however terrible the
reason for some of them may be, that allow us to stop seeing each other as
enemies and get a glimpse of each other's humanity for a second.

Which of course means you can't supply evidence of your absurd charge of

Granted, Ventura isn't exactly Jesse Helms, but the notion of him

The name I'm hearing most often for a two-year replacement is Mondale.
