SP2 Woes
Okay, I exaggerated. Just one woe. Ever since I installed Service Pack 2 (I run Windows XP Home Edition) I can't listen to groove radio.
The address is: http://www.grooveradio.com/streams/grooveradio.asx
The warning is:
Quote:
|
The file you are downloading cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type.
|
I never had a problem before I installed the "upgrade." I (used to) use WMP to play it. Any ideas?

Re: SP2 Woes
I clicked that link and Windows Media Player 9 started up, then I got:
Quote:

Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist at the specified location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline.

Re: SP2 Woes
It works for me on WMP 6.4, so maybe it just prefers really old, crappy software.

Re: SP2 Woes
You're probably right, liv. I'm tempted to uninstall the service pack, since that little improvement is the only difference I've noticed. Whadaya think of the station?

Re: SP2 Woes
I once did about 3 months of paper sorting in one night while high and listening to music just like this on my DirectTV Eurotrash music channel. Good times...

Re: SP2 Woes
It may be the new SP2 security setting not allowing it. You might want to go into the control panel and turn off the FIREWALL.. IF YOU HAVE A ANTIVIRUS ALREADY YOU REALLY DON'T NEED THE FIRE WALL ON. If you prefer to leave it on, check the settings. You may need to allow it or it would play. I turn the flippin fire wall off the minute I install SP2 on any computer.. It is just a pain..!!
Not sure if that is the problem but worth a shot..

Re: SP2 Woes
It works fine on my Win XP Home edition pc with SP2 and the latest updated WMP.
After about 3 seconds, I wished it didn't though. Gawd, that was awful!
CARLA's idea sounds reasonable. Check the firewall.

Re: SP2 Woes
cri!
First I turned off the firewall, but I got the same warning.
Next I installed WMP10, which now gives me a different warning:
Quote:
|
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. Connect to the Internet or insert the removable media on which the file is located, and then try to play the file again.
|
(And, yes, I am connected to the internet when I try it.)
Third, I uninstalled SP2, but I still get the same warning. I was hoping that uninstalling might help with my other problem, too. My computer is sloooooow as hell, and IE locks up all the time for no apparent reason. Usually when I'm trying to submit a post, yay! I've figured out that it always happens when I close another window that I opened while composing the post (like the 'more smileys' window or the 'manage attachments' window) and it only sometimes happens when I remember not to close those windows.
I only recently uninstalled SP2, so I don't yet know how that's affecting IE's locking up all the time, but it has not helped at all with the slowness. I have run Spybot: Search and Destroy, Spy Sweeper, and Avast (it seems like the slowness got worse when I installed Avast, but that could be my imagination). I have yet to run (or install) Adaware at my friend's recommendation. Then I uninstalled Spy Sweeper, because it is always locking up, too. Why does it seem I have more garbage set on here to protect my computer from acting crappy than I have applications that I actually use?
And what the hell is up with the systray? Do I really need all that shit running all the time? Honestly! I've got about 4 different functions of my new printer and card reader, and the thing isn't even turned on. Quicktime and Real Player? Why can't they just turn on when I ask them to? Spy Sweeper used to give me a warning when a new program added itself to my Startup, but then it would say, 'If you have just installed new software or updates, you should keep them.' Meanwhile I've got 1000 processes running all the fricking time and the one thing I'm working on is slower than mollasses!
Any tips? grrr!

Re: SP2 Woes
Do a boot scan with Avast!
I bet you're riddled with Win32 trojans.
It might be time for a reformat and clean reload of everything.
Also, check for bad sectors.

Re: SP2 Woes
Thanks, luna. I did a boot scan when I first installed, and it found nothing! Then again, that was after I ran Spy Sweeper and Spybot, both of which found loads of shit. Going to the hardware store right now, I'll do a disk scan while I'm out. If nothing helps, I can hit it with the hammer I'm about to pick up.
(Can you believe I have every tool a woman could need ((except an electric drill, but not getting one today)) and I have no hammer! Weird)

Erm... it's about a foot and a half tall. Black with gray trim. Wow, how pathetic am I? Seriously, where can I find that information?
The good news is, things seem to be running a little more smoothly. Still can't play grooveradio, but all of my other gripes seem to have taken care of themselves. I think Spy Sweeper was buggering everything up. Nothing against the software itself, I loved it when it was working. I think it just went bad. (oops I closed that smiley window before posting. If you can read this, one more problem solved!)

I have a hammer now, YAY! And a level, and a measuring tape, and a shower massage. But no broken appliances. Give me (and my hammer) time. muahahahaha!

Re: SP2 Woes
Too many Spybot programmes will cause software conflicts with each other. I cannot run both Adaware and Spybot together on my machine for example, as they seem to clash a little. Stick only to what is necessary - don't clutter your machine with redundant programmes running in the background.
Right click on your My Computer icon and go to Properties. Tell us what it says under the Computer subheading under the General tab. It'll tell you what kind of chip and Ram you have.

Aha, I was right clicking on my C drive and getting no such information. FYI: Pentium 4 1.80 GHz; 256 MB of RAM
Things are going smoovely, now, though. Thanks for the help!

Re: SP2 Woes
My pleasure.
I think you could use more Ram, though, as you don't really have enough to play with us big kids. lol.

Re: SP2 Woes
Play what? I don't play computer games, which I know takes a lot of RAM. I think my video card has some extra SD RAM. Anywho, my porn isn't choppy at all, and that's what really matters, isn't it?

Re: SP2 Woes
It's not just games that can chew up RAM. Running lots of programmes in the background will do it, too.
As for choppy porn, I agree - that whole knife play thing is just dangerous, imo.
