The president of the New York Public Library was arrested for drunken driving after he was in a car accident in Harlem, The Post has learned.

Dr. Anthony Marx, 52, was operating a 2009 Audi A4 – a city-owned vehicle registered to the New York Public Library – at 4:45 p.m. Sunday when he was spotted by a witness striking a parked car on East 138th Street, between Madison and Fifth avenues, while driving in reverse, sources said.

Officers responded and smelled booze on Marx’s breath, sources added.

Marx was arrested and taken to the 28th Precinct stationhouse, where he allegedly blew a .19 on a blood alcohol test – more than twice the legal limit of .08.

He was charged with aggravated DWI and released without bail following his court appearance today, sources said.

Marx took over as CEO of the library in July, taking the reins from Dr. Paul LeClerc, who retired after more than 17 years at the helm.

His arrest came a mere six days after the library completed an amnesty program forgiving all fines and penalties on overdue materials for cardholders under 18.

Marx is an alumnus of the Bronx High School of Science and earned his doctorate in politics from Princeton. He is the former president of Amherst College in Massachusetts.

As a young man in the 1980s, he was involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.

Marx is the father of two kids – a son and daughter – with his wife Karen Barkey, professor of sociology at Columbia University. Marx is also a former professor of political science at Columbia.
