The Custom House, Greenock

This painting, entitled 'The Custom House, Greenock' by Robert Salmon, 1775-ca.1851, shows a busy quayside scene viewed from the River Clyde. It was painted in 1820 by Salomn, one of the greatest of all marine painters, who lived in Greenock from 1811 to 1822 before he emigrated to the USA where he became one of the founding fathers of Amercian art. The painting, now in the collection of the McLean Museum was originally presented to the town of Greenock in 1906 by Sir Donald Currie, 1825-1909, a famous shipowner born in the town.
