This summer's gonna be one helluva ride!...and that Bane ADR needs some work - just sayin'... ;)

  • April 30, 2012 10:27 PM CST

Looks alright...at least they fixed Bane's voice.

    by Baked

Too bad the Avengers is going to spank it and put it in the corner.

    Nice trailer.

    BOOOOOOOOOOOORING

    by joel007

Not to be that guy, but... meh. Basically looks like the last one. Maybe I'm just in a weird mood. I dunno. Just looks like more of the same. Plus, catwoman=ridiculous. It is a ridiculous character that doesn't belong withing a thousand miles of a "grounded" film. Anyway, hope I'm wrong. Nolan's awesome.

  • April 30, 2012 10:28 PM CST

    "What are you?"

    by MCVamp

Nice subconscious callback to Burton's Batman, IMHO.

  • April 30, 2012 10:29 PM CST

    fucking amazing...

    by King Conan

so sad to see u go "nolan's" batman. :(

  • April 30, 2012 10:29 PM CST

Uh oh....Bale is still doing the throaty voice Batman

    by BoyNamedSue

Which I don't have a problem with. In this day and age, with technology that could match Wayne's voice with Batman's, Wayne has no choice.....but millions of angry fanboys will still bitch about it on here.

  • April 30, 2012 10:29 PM CST

Avengers = Flick. Dark Knight Rises = Film.

    by MCVamp

Plenty of room for both, gentlemen.

  • April 30, 2012 10:30 PM CST

So they heard us bitch about Bale's Batman voice...

    by AreYouNotEntertained

and decided to keep it and add Bane. Nice. Also, fantastic music.

  • April 30, 2012 10:30 PM CST

    wow..very fuckin cool

    by red_eddie

it will have alot to live up to compared to the dark knight..but then again this is looking like a completely different movie than the other two...literally the dark knight rising/batman making a comeback after getting slapped around alot by bane..very interesting.

  • April 30, 2012 10:30 PM CST

By the way. There IS incentive to make good movies

    by happybunni

Batman & Robin (1997) $130,000,000 (Worldwide) X-Men 2: X-Men United (2003) $214,948,780 (USA) Batman Begins (2005) $371,853,783 (Worldwide) X-Men 3: The Last Stand (2006) $234,360,014 (USA) The Dark Knight (2008) $1,001,921,825 (worldwide) You make good superhero movies, and the box office will follow.. If not in the original, then definitely in the sequel. You make a shitty superhero movie? People will hear about that instantly and not see it.

    Loved the trademark Catwoman kick

    by chubasqueiro

Kind of reminded me when Michelle was on that skintigh suit... Nolan´s films do lots of reference from the Burton´s ones.

Since when does Batman have a spaceship?

    by darthwaz1

That thing isn't the Batwing, or Batcopter..wtf is it? Did he steal it from Darkseid in the in-between years??

  • even though Bane's dialogue is much clearer, there's a disconnected quality to the rest of the sound design which speaks of..hmm...unfinished?..ADR mixing?... I love it all, don't get me wrong Mr. Nolan!...I..uh..oh never mind...fuck it, it's awe-inspiring - it really is! I've got a big shit-eating grin on my face! Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus....the Silvercity down the street from me is gonna get a lot of my hard earned cash this summer! Thank you Mr. Nolan...now please just keep Mr. Snyder on a tight leash! ;)

This trailer is very not in your face

    by BlackBauer0320

Almost subtle. My only issue is I think they showed a little too much of the "Batman gets his ass handed to him and is on the brink of giving up" footage. Count me as one who actually liked Bane's voice better in the earlier trailer as well.

  • April 30, 2012 10:36 PM CST

    The Depth of the threat....

    by Soulpt

seems unclear to me. Comparing it to the scale of Avengers Movie this looks small. I hope I am proved wrong int that the main story and resurrection of the Batman will elevate the entire films scale. It sure does look like he gets broken early on and they ship him off site to suffer.

  • April 30, 2012 10:37 PM CST

    Grr... wrong button

    by AreYouNotEntertained

"You're punishment must be more severe..." I really do love the way he delivers that line. Like Wayne's not understand that 2+2=4 and it's not getting through his thick skull.

I liked Bane's voice better before too, but if it shuts up the whiny bitches, fine. btw, Marion made out with Lord Bale in that so I guess she's been anointed. Does that make her Made Marion? (I meant that spelling.) :D

One thing I thought that this site was always lacking on this site is the following of the viral movement, specifically when it came to the ARGs. There was very little coverage of the TDK and Tron virals that were going on at the time. I know the I, and other ARGers, really appreciate the simple acknowledgement. Thanks.

    by notcher

Can't compare the two. Totally different kinds of movies, PERIOD! This trailer went with more story and subtleness, The Avengers showed lots of things go boom. That's okay, they're different. As for this, FUCKING AYE YEAH!!! Although, Bane looks bigger, which according to many morons on this site isn't possible because Tom Hardy isn't very big in real life. Hmm?

    by MooseMalloy

So much for reality. And Bruce Wayne would never have hair like that! What's this long in the back shit? And once again Alfred looks like a freaked out alcoholic or something.

  • April 30, 2012 10:50 PM CST

The hell is wrong with catwoman?

    by DBCOOPER

Seriously, she appears to fit in as well as anyone in this universe.

  • I mean, really? Yet again bad choreographed fights and military make believe porn. Yay. Reboot Batman already, I can't stand it anymore. You can't try to look all artsy and look so cheap at the same time. Warner, give us DC Movieverse! Nolan, go back to make amazing movies, like The Prestige! Nolan fanboys will try to spin this around, but I fail to see how the general audience will get excited by this. Hell, I fail to see how ANYONE will get excited by this trailer.

  • April 30, 2012 10:51 PM CST

  • April 30, 2012 10:53 PM CST

So, JGL is Robin-Nightwing-Gonna-Be-Batman kinda guy?

    by jedimast3r

This is contrived and kinda telegraphed. And it seems to me that this franchise is taking itself too seriously.

That's been my whole problem with this reboot - it never brought in the Robin/Nightwing/Batgirl element that balances Batman and who he is. Barbara, Dick, Jason, and Tim grounded Bruce and tempered his obsession with his crusade simply by him caring for and protecting them. Sharing his war with them. Not to mention that the others (as evidenced in the comics and animated series) brought that small element of fun that this franchise is sorely missing.

I'm all for a reboot, and might not even catch this right away. Even Spider-Man looks way more enjoyable than this. If the next Bat-Series isn't more faithful to the Bat-Universe then you can count me out of the ride. I want more movies like Marvel is producing.

  • April 30, 2012 10:53 PM CST

    BB=Dark, TDK=Darker, TDKR=Downright Suicidal

    by topaz4206

My gosh this was depressing. I'm not asking for comic relief or anything, but this was like cinematic wristcutting.

  • April 30, 2012 10:53 PM CST

    Meh.

    by TheBigFuckinLebowski

Bruce Wayne still looks like the fucking douchebag Christian Bale is. And that military look does not agree with the Batman mythos at all.

  • April 30, 2012 10:54 PM CST

    Looks great. My only concern...

    by Hint_of_Smegma

...is Catwoman. Gotta agree with a few of the other comments...she does look ridiculous. Gorgeous but daft, she looked a joke in the stills - and while Bane looked a bit crap in the stills but awesome in the footage, she still looks a bit of a joke. So fingers crossed it works on the screen. Gordon-Levitt looks brilliant in this, and the rest of the trailer blew me away. It's gonna be great no matter what, we all know it, I think the only damp squib is likely to be Hathaway.

  • April 30, 2012 10:54 PM CST

    Joey Gordon-Levitt...

I can't be the first person commenting here to think that trailer really telegraphed the incorporation of the "Bane 'breaks' the Batman" storyline from Knightfall, can I? Batman's gonna get his back "broken" and come back in the last minute to save the day, just like the comics. Not that that couldn't be a sweet movie, just sayin' I'm surprised I'm the first here tonight to speculate.

    Look, here's the deal.....

    by Tothe3rdPower

.....The Avengers look amazing too, but this caps off something incredibly special! Not only did Nolan break the sequel curse, but he probably delivered the greatest trilogy of all time! There is NO WAY this is a miss! Avengers vs. TDKR is stupid because they are two different movies. Nolan has spent almost a decade crafting this story and raising the stakes each time. There are some things to nitpick across each film, but there is no such thing as a perfect movie. As a whole, this trilogy has been incredible. Nolan gets what the audience wants and delivers. I am so sad to see this version of Batman and Gotham go by the wayside. What an incredible journey it has been!

Makes me feel sleepy honestly, the color palette reminds me more of Masterpiece Theater than the other two Batman movies in Nolan's franchise. Not that I'm wanting the neon 80s colors from Batman and Robin (still have retinal burn-in from that shit) but for a Batman movie this seems very subdued. I suppose it's just being a long time comic geek, TDK took me out of feeling like I was in "Gotham", and more like I was in Chicago, and this looks like an even further departure in an attempt to prove that you can make a comic book hero movie and make it look like it could happen in the Real World. I suppose it worked for TDK, but I worry that this may swing too far towards the gloomy, brooding side of things for my taste.

Catwoman looks fine. And the reason why she doesn't look like Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns or Halle Berry in Catwoman is because that look has been done to death. Anne can act. I'm more than satisfied.

I totally agree with you. Batman is gone. Batman comes back when BANE shows up. Bane lures BATS in, breaks him, captures him and throws him in a hole. BAT gets out, hides in Wayne Manor while BANE is distracted with destroying Gotham. Bat shows up at the end to stop everything or die, or both is my bet... I absolutely believe BATS dies at the end of this... Or is so injured, he can no longer go on being Batman..

  • I really don't know how you top the last one though. But it doesn't matter to me if they do. It'll be a treat either way. Plus Avengers and Prometheus. What fun.

  • I go to movies to be entertained, not to have a bunch of half baked moral lessons thrown at me, thanks Nolan. But of course I'll go see it anyway. I like movies, it'll be a fun way to spend a few hours. But I'd easily bet $20 that The Avengers will be more fun and entertaining for a sizable portion of people.

I LOVE the Batman films, BUT...

    by No time for Haters

why is it in the movies the villians outshine Batman? In the comics, Batman is such a badass that he can pretty much defeat any other hero. I've never really seen this Batman as being a badass. He's good, but not a badass. For instance, in TDK when he plays chicken with the Joker while he's on the Bat Pod, in the movie he moves first and crashes. In the comics, he would've put out his arm and clotheslined the Joker or shot out some sort of net and captured him. My definitive Batman movie would play up the "Worlds Greatest Detective" moniker and have them show Batman for the badass he is.

The above is in reference to the reverse effect this film is igniting in people. What reverse effect? Admittedly before Ledger's death people were having the same kind of reaction they are now i.e. "This will suck" "The color palette is wrong" "The outfit's not realistic" "Heath Ledger as the Joker? But he's a twat!" Afterward his untimely passing though, it started to change furiously. Everyone wanted, no they NEEDED TDK to succeed. You can make several observations on that oddity with the most obvious being the need to honor Ledger's monumental performance. Now, however, everyone wants and needs TDKR to fail because it cannot possibly, IN ANY UNIVERSE, be equal to or superior to what came before. I guess my dumb question is, if you're a fan of the previous films or of Chris Nolan's work WHY in the two-penny fuck are you rooting for it fail now? So the worship of TDK can live on? SMH.

Production values are high, but I'm still not impressed.

    by cookepuss

The trailer's better than the half-assed teaser from a while back, but there's something wholly underwhelming about this trailer. Maybe it's the lack of decent music or foley. Maybe it's that they really haven't sold Bane yet. Maybe it's just that it looks, well, like Batman and not quite fresh anymore. I don't know. Whatever the case, I see some sharp camera work and a lot of snazzy VFX work, but not a lot to get me going. I'm certainly not feeling as excited about this as I was the last movie. I'm sure that this one won't be any sort of disaster, but I think that it'll utterly fail to live up to TDK's high standard. As good as BB, but not as good as TDK. Still looking forward to Avengers way more.

    by heylookoverthere

    A) Batman's back gets broken (see about 1:45 in) "you've given these people everything" cut to a shot of batman from the neck up at an awkward angle. B) JGL = Next batman They've stressed since the first one that batman was trying to be "more than one man, a symbol" so clearly he needs someone to carry the mantle once he's out. Gotta be Joseph Gorden Levitt.

    Boring trailer is boring.

    by Jack

The truth is that at this point, I'm looking forward more for the Amazing Spider-Man TRAILER than Nolan's Batman MOVIE. I'm nkt talking this because I'm in love with The Avengers, the fact is that I just can't stand more Nolan's Batman. Take a look at those fight scenes, the way that Batman moves... hugh. Bring the Batman reboot already.

  • A storm is coming? You don't owe these people anything? How many times have we heard these lines before? It's called the illusion of sophistication, folks. If this stuff had actual gravity, it wouldn't need the tinkly-piano-silent treatment. Instead it's some lovely establishing shots and some completely mundane action dressed up as something more meaningful than it is. It's the Matrix trilogy all over again. People want it to have substance so bad that they read substance into nothing. These are stylistically pretty films draped with piles of outlandish nonsense that doesn't have the decency to take itself less than massively seriously. And the more serious it takes itself, the more ridiculous a handful of costumed guys feeling the need to fistfight each other looks in the increasingly stuffy "realistic" setting. I mean, look at Bane. He's one well-placed bullet away from not being a threat. But Wayne still has to put on a funny suit and box him. It's all personal taste, but a comic book movie that thinks it can get away with pretending it's not a comic book film is fooling itself. I adore comics and comic heroes, but this ain't great art, people. It's a sour-faced mope-fest that's putting forth bland platitudes as though they're original and deep insights. I may see it - BB bored the heck out of me and TDK was a similarly overhyped mixed bag - but I'll have no illusions about it.

    Trailer style...

    by David Lazaruk

The trailer campaign for this film reminds me of 'Batman Begins'. Christopher Nolan had so many surpirses and reveals planted in the narrative that he could not reveal too much during the trailers. As a result, when I first saw them I was underwhelmed (so many movie trailers nowadays reveal WAY too much about the films anyway). When 'The Dark Knight' came along, they were able to throw so much Heath Ledger awesomness at us that we did not even realize that those trailers revealed just as little about the plot as those of the previous installment. Now we have 'The Dark Knight Rises'. I have found these trailers, while certainly peaking my pre-established interest, to be significantly lacking in 'ooooh' and 'aaaah' moments. Because of this, I think we're in yet another scenario where there will be a large amount of twists and surprises. So many that they probably can not put anything of serious coolness in the trailers. Compare the amount of footage of Heath Ledger in the 'DK' trailers vs. the amount of Bane footage in the 'TDKR' trailers. The lack of central villain presence in the trailers can mean one of two things: 1) The best Bane bits are being saved for the film or 2) Bane is not the central villain of the film at all. Choice 2 is my guess. Remember who the central villain was in 'Batman Begins'? Liam Neeson. How much footage did he get in the trailer? Not much obviously. Now who else do we know is going to be in the film who's barely represented in any of the three trailers for 'TDKR'? Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. If Nolan manages to maintain the quality of filmmaking that he's done in the past, I have no doubt we will be seeing a film which will blow our minds. I think these trailers are actually designed to make us underestimate what we will see onscreen. I for one am very excited.

  • Sorry, Burton's first Batman was more rooted in reality than this. This trailer was slow, ponderous, and pretentious. Batman's costume, particularly his mask, are just AWFUL. And Bale's voice is laughable.

Does every fucking trailer have to end with someone saying something and then the badass saying something that proves them wrong with a super gadget that does something super awesome? It was nice and dramatic, and then you throw that corny cliche shit because nothing can ever be good. I bet Bruce dies in this movie, but you can't leave the masses with a somber ending, no, you're gonna have him jump up at the last second and "I'm okay, Gotham will live happily ever after, yaaaaaaa!!!!" Then everyone claps their hands and McDonalds is clearly seen in the background because that's who's sponsoring everything.

  • I think Inception is a very intelligent film for what it accomplishes. As a cinematic experience there's something about it that still feels more tedious than anything else. It could be the flow of the dialogue or the overall rhythm of the scenes. The snow scene was a great example - it just feels like tedious action, almost as if it's not cut correctly with the music.

Cause yeah, the idea of metallic vehicles achieving lift through propulsion is magic. Not science, not even science fiction, it's magic. The movie is ruined.

  • Won't it be hilarious if suddenly all the movie trailers in coming years copy another Nolan trailer? Anyways, I'm kind of burned out on Batman. I'll definitely see this though, as I am a Nolan fan and I did enjoy his other two Batman films. Prometheus and The Hobbit are more my cup of tea in terms of big event 2012 films. This trailer though, I liked the slower build. I'm not a fan of Bane's voice, but otherwise this looks like it will fit in nicely with BB and TDK to form a trilogy. I just can't get uber excited for this one. At least not excited like I am for Prometheus for example. Then again, I can't complain, as this year is loaded with good films. Even in the fall, where we will get Skyfall and Gravity. Anyways, I'm happy for all you Batman fanatics who will be getting TDKR this summer.

Hope really is lost. You have religious retards in power = Christian/Conservatives/Republicans. There's nothing anyone can do to change that. You have Ron Paul who speaks nothing but truth and he is labeled as a nut. People have freedom through the internet and that is slowly being controlled and monitored. That little bit of freedom will be taken away. Every citizen is now a criminal and a terrorist unless they assimilate and become one with the organization. The only savior will be for the oppressed to rise as an individual, as a voice, as a rebel, as an outcast.

The marketing is very direct. Look at the trailer for TDK. They practically show you Harvey Dent becoming Two Face. Nolan doesn't hide what he does. He is just so great at executing it that we will all be amazed when it happens.

  • Okay, MAYBE "Batman" dies, but not Bruce Wayne. (get it?) I just don't think they're going to close it up THAT tight. Nolan might be done with Batman, but WB certainly is NOT!

the same person - Bruce Wayne. Bane is just Bruce's extreme psyche, what he really wishes to be, but can't due to pressure to be a symbol for "good" even though the good and right thing would be to be what dumbasses traditional deem as a "terrorist"? But anyway, is Bane really the bad guy? He's fighting a corrupt system is he not? He's doing what Batman is too chicken shit to do. Joker was more about chaos; Bane looks like a guy with a plan.

  • When a movie about Batman takes itself so seriously to the point they no long even care about making an engaging trailer and all it's shown is bad fighting scenes and military toys, there's something very wrong. Ledger's Joker was a force of nature through the 2nd movie, but it could be even better if Nolan could make Batman likable like in BB. Now this movie... it'll be lucky if it's able to take the first spot from Amazing Spider-Man.

    The plot

    by MajorBludd

In the teaser it retells Ra's speech about being more than a man - being a legend etc. it was talking about Bane, not batman. Bane is Ra's new recruit in the league of shadows/assassins. We know that Talia will be in this, and probably Ra's. Ra's knows that batman is Bruce Wayne. He sends Bane to exact revenge. Just after Dents funeral, Bruce moves back the the manor where he is ambushed by bane. There is a fight in the cave and bats gets paralyzed. Flash forward 8 years and bats in a mess, Wayne enterprises is under the control of talia (hence those camo Tumblers being used by Banes army). Shit happens and Bruce must rise in a rocky balboa fashion with the help of cat woman and JGL. Batman defeats Bane and then dies as he flys away with the bomb that was going to nuke Gotham. JGL becomes Azreal and continues the legend. The end.

    by notcher

Harvey Dent is Two Face, nothing shown or not shown in TDK trailer was going to conceal that. TDK trailer showed a lot but no one, NO ONE knew what actually was going to happen in that movie. I read most of the talkbacker's ideas who thought they figured it out, but were incredibly wrong. The idea JGL takes over is ridiculous, he has a big part to play, but it won't be that. And killing Batman would be bold, but I'm not convinced at all that will happen. Nolan is smart no matter what any troll says on this site, he's been one step ahead every movie, more like 5 steps ahead, and he will be this time too. All I can say is I'm glad I know nothing about what is going to happen. Lots of shots from the same scenes, which means lots of things not revealed. BRING IT!!!

    @heylookoverthere RE: ASM vs. TDKR

    by Jack

Geeks are seeing this new Batman trailer online. Word of mouth of Nolan fanatics could help, but I'm not feeling a good buzz about this trailer at all. Anyone with a critic unbiased opinion would get what I mean. I wouldn't take Amazing Spider-Man for granted if I was you. It all depends how much they build the hype for that and how good the reviews are. A shitload of people will be watching ASM and TDK for the first time with The Avengers movie. I'm not saying that TDK won't be successful, but I wouldn't take Amazing Spider-Man for granted. Depressive movies like TDKR - hell, it's not even a novel thing for a 3rd part, Matrix did back then and sucked monkey balls - have a desvantage to more uplifiting movies. I honestly see more potential in Amazing Spider-Man than TDKR so far. If the new ASM trailer is good, especially if it's just released with The Avengers movie... well, I'd say that TDKR fans could get very surprised, to say the least. Will it be the #1 movies comes July, 20th? Most likely. But as for how much it will be successful... I sincerily don't know.

Batplane is not at all ridiculous: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwK7WvvUvlI The trails behind the batplane are convexion. Anne Hathaway blows ScarJo out of the water. Catwoman actually has a personality and is interesting, whereas Black Widow reminds us how bland Marvel's obscure heroines are. There's no depth to BW in IM2 or the Avengers. Natasha Romanov is supposed to be Russian yet ScarJo makes no effort, doing a Sean Connery and not bothering. Hathaway puts alot of effort into Selina's voice, basing it on Heddy Lamar.

That having been said, those people still paid to see, and mostly seemed to enjoy the movie. It went on to become the most successful comic book based move to date (except maybe The Avengers?) There's no reason to think that those Dark Knight viewers aren't interested in paying to see the conclusion of the series.

    majorbludd - plot ideas

    by teddy_duchamp

like your plot idea, I think Batman gets captured by Bane and his men, and dragged off to a prison. Either for 8 years or a few months hard to tell from the trailer. but for sure Bane beats the crap out of him at the begining and then he 'rises' to defeat bane at the end with the help of catwoman. whether Bruce survives remains to be seen!

  • At least not anymore. The first movie was great. The second was ok, but really pushed my willingness to accept the serious tone of it all. Now this is just asking too much. It just feels like it's trying WAY too hard. I'm not saying it has to be campy like the TV series, far from it, but they are treating this subject material like it's fucking Shakespeare, and it's all I can do to keep from laughing out loud when I hear Batman grunting his lines like a water buffalo giving birth. On top of ALL that, the trailer is just not that good. I didn't see anything impressive that might inspire me to see the movie. Who cut this pretentious mess anyway?

    by Jack

This would be a bold ending, but I think you're expecting way too much. What will happen is that Bane will break Batman. Literally. Leaving him crippled, like the Fall of the Bat in the comics. Selina will somehow change sides, and stand by Bruce's side. Years will pass and Bane is now a crime legend, while Batman stayed in the past. JGL Batman will take over, probably mentored by Bruce -with gray hair, like seen in some pics - and helped by Selina. But shit will go wrong and he'll die. Bruce will have to rise again, at least for one last mission. I'm still not sure if Bale or JGL will be the Batman at the end of the movie, but one of them will.

    by Tothe3rdPower

I believe the part where Batman attacks the dudes hold the AK-47s happens at the beginning! It's a trap Bane uses to corner Batman in the sewers. Bane kicks the absolute shit out of him and he flees! Harvey Dent is dead! Batman is hunted by the police! It is insinuated in trailer # 2 that Gordon gets deposed! And now some strange new supervillain, worse than the Joker, appears! I think Batman quits! Who knows what JGL is there for! He does not take over as Batman. That is very obvious! Also, it looks like that Batman/Catwoman teamup is fighting some kind of security contingent. For some reason, maybe they have to break into Wayne Enterprises to steal some tech!

  • Holy pink baby Jesus that looks incredible!!!

    BB > TDK

    by MajorBludd

The joker was riveting in all but batman begins has far more rewatchabiliy. Batman begins felt like a true batman story while TDK felt like a great joker story but without batman. TDK's "batman" was a guy wearing armor who really could have been anybody. I think the dent plot was thin and they honestly should have kept Tom cruise wife, as changing the actress took a lot of the weight and urgency out of hers and Bruce's romance subplot. It was pretty cold to begin with but recasting made it seem like a waste of plot space. I hope TDKR reconnects with the batman character of BB. I don't want to see batman as a secondary character again.

    Plot/majorbludd

    by Jamadaro

I think majorbludd has hit on a lot of good thoughts about where the movie will end up. However, I want to add different thoughts on the matter. I can't believe the trailer all but confirms Bruce ends up in a wheelchair. If you watch 00:13 - 00:15, when he turns left, Wayne's weight doesn't shift naturally as if he were standing. His shoulders stay straight when he turns. He would seem to be sitting, which means his turn has to be via a wheelchair. Also, look at the room. There is a window beside him (you can see a shutter to the left of it), and his head is drastically below the mid-point where you would push a window up from (even if you take into account a forced perspective). Also, the bookshelf to his back-left...there are at least 3 shelves of books above his head. Given that there is a statue to the right of the shelf that looks like it is sitting on a desk or podium, we can use that to judge that the shelf itself is a normal sized bookshelf. In other words, no way the books are going to be much higher up than he could reach while standing...thus his head being below those books in the snippet would indicate he is at a sitting height. Once again, wheelchair. Next, pause it at 1:35. The suit helmet/headpiece looks odd. It almost looks like Ant-man's helmet (it has a sort of roundness to it that isn't seen in other shots). Either it isn't the normal batsuit, or (and I think this is the case), the oddness is because the person in the suit doesn't fill out the helmet the same way Bale does. I would be willing to bet it is JGL in the suit at 1:35. As further proof, pause at 1:35 and look at the jawline and bottom part of the face, then open a new browser and pause the trailer on a second video box at 1:47. At 1:35, the entire lower face is more elongated than Bale's face at 1:47. Also keep it mind that the trailer says "a fire will rise". If I remember correctly, Azrael had a fire sword. Even if JGL isn't playing an eventual Azrael, I think he is going to end up standing in for Batman when Batman isn't showing up (which would make sense if Wayne is in a wheelchair). At 1:55, Wayne is kissing someone who isn't catwoman, so I am assuming that is the lady they have playing Talia. Why would Wayne be kissing her? My thinking is Talia arranges a relationship with Wayne, and they get married. So, basically I am thinking it will go like this. TDKR starts a bit after the end of TDK. In order to give Gotham some time to calm down (keeping in mind Batman is now viewed as a murderer), Wayne takes a break from being Batman. During this break, he meets Talia, and they eventually fall in love and get married (though really it will be a plan on Talia's part). 8 years go by. In these 8 years, Batman is known as a murderer (from the end of The Dark Knight) and has come to be hated by the city. However, Wayne has still been being Batman despite how the city views him. Meanwhile, by the end of 8 years, Talia has worked her way into Wayne Enterprises and gotten it so that if Bruce is incapacitated, she takes over Wayne's company. Also during the 8 years, via Bruce himself, she has learned everything about Batman/Batcave/fighting style/security measures/etc. Then, in steps Bane (At Talia's request), and Wayne ends up in a wheelchair. Wayne's "punishment" is watching Gotham fail once Batman is no longer around (which was sort of Ra's point in 1, that the city was not worth saving). Not only will it fail, but it will eventually come under the control of Talia/Bane... Backing up a bit, in order to consolidate power and make sure the city does eventually fail, Talia (now in charge of Wayne Enterprises) convinces the city to let her build a private army to "protect Gotham" should the city ever be attacked (thus the tumblers used by Bane's army...as Talia could get those plans from Wayne Enterprises vaults). She convinces the city to let her army take control if things ever get too insane. Eventually, Bane attacks the entire city, giving Talia just the reason she needs to mobilize her army. But, when the army mobilizes, they actually just join Bane's group and take over the city. Because Batman is not around after Bane has broken him (notice the trailer says faith is broken), and because the city has gone to hell, JGL ends up trying to fill the void by pretending to be Batman (thus the janky helmet/a fire will rise thing I mentioned earlier). (Also, notice when JGL asks Selina if "they killed him", it would imply that he either knows Wayne is Batman, or that he knows Selina knows Bane, thus JGL using her as a way to check if Batman being absent is because Bane has killed him). JGL tries to be Batman, but he isn't enough. Bruce (in a wheelchair, with time-passing-indicating facial hair) has to then rehab during the weeks/months that JGL is pretending to be Batman. Wayne is obsessed with being Batman again, but Alfred is against it because the wheelchair situation has shown that Bane could actually kill Wayne if he wanted to. (This would explain why Alfred is giving a speech about not wanting to bury another Wayne...he thinks the wheelchair should be a sign to Bruce that he should give up fighting crime.) Once Wayne is strong enough, and against Alfred's wishes, he puts on the Batsuit again. Selina gets pissed that he is risking his life again having already been put in a wheelchair on behalf of a city that views him as a murderer and criminal (thus her "you don't owe these people anything anymore" dialogue). Likely via some route involving JGL (who is a cop), the police come to trust Batman as a force for good (or maybe, via Gordon, they never stopped believing he was a good guy). Batman/the police eventually take on Bane/Talia's army during the steps/fight scene we saw in the trailer.

    by Tothe3rdPower

........I love TDK and it is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I actually agree with you. It really was not a "Batman" movie. It was a crime saga that used Batman as one distinct part to convey broader ideas. It is as much a "Joker" movie as it is a "Gordon" movie and a "Dent" movie. Batman Begins was much more Batman-centric. This new film looks to be in that mold. I think Batman gets to finish his story. Replacing Holmes was furiously agitating. You know it had to do with the fucking media portraying her and Cruise as whackjobs because Cruise dared to speak up about how the pharmaceuticals have taken over the minds of everyone. And its the truth. Every fucking person is on meds. For what? Because they literally eat shit and don't know what exercise is. Because if they feel something, then there is probably something wrong with them. And here the media is, licking Cruise's ass again because his movies still make lots of money and that's all people/media respond to is money. Everyone is bought to be fucked like a bitch. And, yes, this topic has everything to do with this trilogy if you know anything about the story its telling.

Remember in the clip before M:I4 the CIA had him in custody!!!!!!! Also, Selina Kyle could be a SPY!!!!! Fact is no one knows anything about the movie! Only thing you can infer from all the trailers is that Bruce Wayne stays as Batman, the fight on the steps is in the last act, and Bruce Wayne does NOT end up in a wheelchair, but does end up hobbled! All that fucktarded analysis Jamadaro gave is put to rest by his upper body movement. He is clearly not confined to a wheelchair, asshole!

Yawn! Nolan's Batman is sooooo 2005!

    by Legolars

I honestly can't get excited about this. This looks exactly like TDK and Inception, just a bit bigger with everyone looking more gloomy. Bring on The Avengers, Prometheus and The Hobbit.

  • May 1, 2012 2:42 AM CST

    BB > TDK = True.

    by Jack

TDK is good, but surrounded with the morbid hype of Ledger's last performance. There's more to that in my opinion. In Batman Begins, Gotham is a character in its own right, brilliantly estabilished. All those elements were thrown away with TDK. With TDKR, all I'm seeing is images of Chicago and reverse NY playing the part of Gotham, and that's something that Nolan obsession with realism makes me mad. Gotham is as essential as Batman itself. You don't have Gotham, you don't build this place around Batman, and you don't have a complete Batman movie. I'm a fan of The Fall of the Bat storyline, I can see it working, I just really dislike Nolan's execution. I wish people would say to him that this needs to be set in Gotham, and that it's sad that 1 second of Catwoman kicking ass looks more awesome than all the Batman fighting scenes. And that's not a new problem, as it's something people have been complaining since BB. All in all, I'm excited for TDKR, I just wish the reboot takes close notes to what Marvel is doing. There's a reason why people fell in love with The Avengers, and trust me, not even the two Nolan movies combined are as good as The Avengers, and I don't mean this to confront anyone. It's just that I've read people talking crap about The Avengers without having a single clue what that movie has achieved. We'll be very lucky if both Marvel and DC aim high like The Avengers does in their next installlments.

    by biscuithead

    Who'd a thought we'd ever see this?

  • I imagine they start that way, but Bane overthrows Tahlia Al Ghul which forces her to ally with Batman. Course that same plot analysis obviously applies to Catwoman to, but Tahlia, while being a character I know next to nothing about, is the one I know the least about so far, and thus, is far more interesting than the masked shenanigans. And yeah, I think they've got something big and kooky planned for JGL, big and kooky indeed. This will be a really great movie. We really due have a blessed someer ahead of us, I even think we're really underestimating Spider-Man. I'm just gonna sit back and take it all in, for better or worse, but I'm getting a 'better' vibe so far.

.....I concede your point! The hand to hand combat was atrocious in Batman Begins. It was way too choppy. It was better in The Dark Knight, but still not nuanced enough! I think Nolan will find his footing with this one. He is a film-maker capable of learning as he goes along. Shame he had to use the previous two films and Inception to find his groove. The man can film a car chase, no doubt! I thought the shootouts in Inception were very done. Hopefully, going forward his technique for filming one on one combat continues to make strides.

Batman needs to go back to his more grounded film noir root and they need to hire Jon Hamm as Batman/Bruce Wayne. When you have a real man playing a super-hero he doesn't need to play trick with his voice to sound like he can handle himself.

If bane actually paralyzed batman on film, like beat him into that wheel chair, do you think the MPAA would grant a PG13? That coupled with overval bleak and dark tone, might it be out of the question that such an act even takes place? The MPAA are huge pussies and might slap an R on something so shocking. Perhaps bats just gets the shit kicked out of him and is demoralized for a time. Maybe there is no paralysis at all!

  • May 1, 2012 3:17 AM CST

    I won't miss Nolan

    by Nerd Rage

I'm never in awe of how smooth or clever his Batman is. My ideal Batman is less of gadget-dependent James Bond with a rubber tech-suit and more of the adaptable Jason Bourne mixed with a classic Sherlocke Holmes in a mysterious cowl. I always liked in BTAS when Batman would handle most situations with a couple of moves from the shadows. A smoke grenade here, a couple of bolas and a bat-a-rang there and the entire room of gangsters would be disarmed and at his mercy. Then when the place is surrounded by their back up Batman calmy disappears using some obscure escape route. Nolan's Batman is all about reliance on hi-tech gadgets and less about genius application of mastered yet simple skill set.

As many (including myself) assumed. This may have no connection to Knightfall whatsoever (other than bane being a villain - reimagined one at that)

  • Both will be enormously successful, but both entertain different tones and themes. Personally I prefer the lighter, wittier Marvel movies. TDK was tremendous but a bit too downbeat for constant repeat viewing...I could watch Avengers all day tho - it's like "Curb with lasers".

No I get what you are saying, to me it definitely looks like he's rotating a wheel chair. His shoulders are level but he does this slight rotation - his arms gesture a slight downward angle push like if he was manipulating the tires with his hands. Also the window height that the guy up above pointed out. He also looks thinner and sickly. I'm sold on the wheelchair theory.

  • May 1, 2012 3:49 AM CST

He is rotating and moving backwards. Also the frame is cropped right above where you'd see the rear handles. Why include this shot? It's got to allude to something important.

    Holding Gotham hostage...interesting...

    by BurnHollywood

Gotham City is actually an island, so blow up the bridges, threaten major bloodshed with the previously utilized "cave-in" weapon he debuted in the stadium to keep the Feds out... Declare independence from the US, and presto! you're own ready-made city-state. You can even demand food and supplies from the mainland, a la North Korea. Ron Paul should think about going in this direction.

  • May 1, 2012 3:56 AM CST

    I watched it again

    by MajorBludd

Its all in the upper body gesture. Unless off screen Wayne has 2 little t-Rex arms dribbling a basketball he is definitely using his arms to move the wheel chair. Anyways I concur that it'd be a shame to keep him paralysed for any Amount of time really, unless the payoff is massive.

    Wheelchair motion theory

    by Jamadaro

Woah, kind of surprised at the level of reaction to my wheelchair comments. Looking at those few seconds of the trailer (and as bludd also noticed) it seemed to me that Bale's entire motion suggested wheelchair. If it isn't a wheelchair, it isn't a wheelchair...no big deal...just one more theory about the film. While it doesn't make me an expert by any means, I am simply coming at this from the point of view of my dad having been in a wheelchair the last 25 years. I have seen that exact sort of turn a million times by my dad when he is turning his chair...so the subtle shoulder difference, the arms, the room items height, it all just suggests a wheelchair to me. I'm certainly not trying to get anybody all fired up about it. I freely admit that a wheelchair might never figure into the whole movie. Just having some fun discussing ideas online!

    Oh great...

    by SUPERJIM

Not trying to be a hater here because I'm looking firward to this, but huge sections on the movie without Batman while Bruce Wayne is stuck down a well? Seriously? Superhero movies use this device far too often, removing the super element to humanise the characters. Lazy writing in my opinion. Thor, Spiderman 2 & 3, Superman 2 (I think), every origin story ever made and even The Incredibles to an extent. Iron Man 2 had Tony too drunk to be a hero, Bruce Wayne has done something similar with womanising, the Hulk movies both have Banner actively trying to hold onto his humanity by suppressing his super element. I'm sure there are more examples that I can't think if now. Yaaaaaawn. I'm hoping that it doesn't last too long and I still have every hope that TDKR is going to be fucking epic, fingers crossed!

    TDKR vs Avengers

    by LAZLOW

This franchise feels like there is so much more at stake within that world. The emotional investments of the characters as well as the audience of this story the "property" no longer feels like DC, rather NOLAN as the brand, in a way we all hoped M. Night would have become. I'm going to the Marvel marathon culminating with the Avengers, and I can't stand the wait, but man, something about Nolan/Batman i feel is rarified air. If the Avengers meets half my expectations of the TDKR I'll be pleased. Can you believe we're in a summer where Spidey is not the most anticipated movie?

  • May 1, 2012 4:35 AM CST

    Looks GREAT...and....

    by SHADOWPRIME

A couple of things... I don't get the "I like THIS, so I can't like THAT" mentality. No offense, but just don't get it. I don't see why my enjoyment of STAR TREK should mean that I can't enjoy STAR WARS, and LORD OF THE RINGS. I don't see why enjoying Marvel means I can't enjoy DC. And so forth. I hope AVENGERS, DARK KNIGHT and SPIDER-MAN ALL are awesome this summer. I know there is (SPOILERS?) a lot of speculation that Batman will be killed off in this one. For me, I hope they send Batman off with a big, cathartic "win". Feels like he is due, to me. Batman is not a "rah rah" character, but if this really is the end to the arc, I'd like to see Batman overcome his travails here, and cliche or not, go out a winner.

  • But the trailers for Batman Begins even made me not want to see it. I was very pleasantly surprised when I did end up seeing it. I didn't care for any of the Dark Knight trailers either. But it was my favorite movie of that year. And now this trailer was fucking boring to me. So based on this trailer I'd never want to see this movie. Yet I won't be surprised if this movie turns out to be the best summer blockbuster. How misleading trailers can be!

  • Nolans batman trilogy were crime capers about how gotham became corrupted. christopher is a very serious filmmaker and his bat movies were deadly serious. even though this one wasnt filmed at night like the others were. it still has a very serious tone. prior to nolan coming to this franchise, batman was campy and silly looking. talkbackers hate campy and silly. so Warners served up three very serious batman movies about crime and corruption. I find it very interesting that this whole weedon v nolan argument.

THAT'S HOW YOU MARKET A FILM, (Andrew Stanton/ Disney take note) This trailer gives so much and yet gives no answers and just raises more questions!. Bravo Mr. Nolan and the marketing team. It's like the comic book and film industry had a talk and decided to make my fanboy dreams come true. First The Avengers and now this incredible trailer. IMAX ticket booked. Notice how this trailer doesn't feature Ra's Al Ghul's speech from Begins like the first teaser trailer. I think Nolan and Co. are trying to make us focus on Bane and not speculate on the resurgence of The Demon Head himself. He might be puppeteering Bane, or Batman might even team up with him to stop Bane! I'm thinking like a kid again. Too much geek brain stimulation. This trailer is so incredibly dark in tone, I can't stop watching it. it really does give a sense of finality even if it didn't have the text to say it.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES rules this summer

    by Michael Morning

THE AVENGERS should be good, but not the great movie it could be (which is typical of Marvel vs. DC animation...while DC live-action movies may not be much (on average), DC animated JUSTICE LEAGUE and even YOUNG JUSTICE are just fantastic).

PROMETHEUS looks great, but unfortunately I get tired of sci-fi movies devolving into horror movies (I'm looking at you, SUNSHINE and EVENT HORIZON). This looks like it starts out as epic sci-fi and devolves into another ALIEN movie. I hope not, but the trailers seem pretty clear on this point.

And that leaves THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - this newest trailer is in the same tone as the previous movies. A great story with great action. We also have no idea where this one is going, though they do hint at the strong possibility that Bruce Wayne/Batman sacrifices everything (i.e. he dies). We'll see in a couple months, but THIS is the movie of the summer.

I just can't believe some of you little pricks called the trailer "boring". Someone actually takes a superhero story seriously and fills it with a stellar cast and epic story, but someone has to come out and say it's "boring". Don't worry, I'm sure Michael Bay has more dancing/pissing Transformer robots to soothe your aching psyches.

    by aphextwin

This is an Opinion mmmkay? Nolan is a good, if not, great writer...but as a Movie Director he has his shortcomings, which is most noticable with his action sequences. I am still scratching my head about how bad the whole snow sequence in Inception was constructed; poor editing, lazy cinematography and an overall lack of creativity...the hallway/zero gravity fight scene was great however, but it was just such a small portion of the whole movie. Barman Begins was clumsily staged (and I am pretty mild with that), The Dark Knight significantly better, but again the big action sequences here are so hard to 'read' at times in terms of geography and spatial awareness, I think it's also due to some really choppy editing. Nolan has this overall disconnecting way of directing (framing, camera angels and lighting) that is not my cup of tea, but I know it's just a matter of taste. I will see TDKR but this trailer didn't evoke a must see response from me...Prometheus Trailer(s), on the other hand...DID.

To those saying it's "pretentious" (ironhelix): Fuck off. Go watch that 1960's piece of shit TV show. If you can't see the potential in this film from that outstanding trailer, then you are truly and rightly FUCKED, and no film is worth wasting on your sad sorry, pathetic contrarian cunt asses. You think that if The Avengers beats TDKR that it will somehow lessen the love for it (assuming it is a good film, no reason not to think that based on Nolan's outstanding track record)? You're a fucking tool. Walk yourself out in front of a bus while you wait for the "DC version of Marvel's reboot" which means underwhelming single films that lead to something much better. If you think that trailer was boring, then you really should just stick to bright colours and movies that tell you what is happening with a voice-over narrative. Dink. And you're calling people who love this trailer "Whedonites"? That would mean they have a love for Joss's work, not Nolan's you fucking shit stain.

    by Mikey Wood

...the reason this website is a punchline (and it is) isn't because of the news it offers, it's because of talkbacks like this. I check this site multiple times daily. I enjoy the content. I don't always agree, I'm not always comfortable with the OBVIOUS payola that goes on, but I enjoy it. I thought I'd, finally after how many years, join in on talkbacks and now I finally get it. I get why other sites claim to be "smarter" and "more professional". I get why nobody takes Ain't it Cool seriously anymore. It's you people. It's not Harry or the Kid or Quint or any of the others. It's YOU. I've read time ang again how people attempt an intelligent dialogue on these talkbacks and are just burried by stupid reactionary fanboy nonsense, bickering, and name calling. You're all pathetic.

Joseph Gordon Levitt = Batman "Beyond"?

    by Duck of Death

I don't think Nolan will kill Bruce Wayne in this film...too downbeat of an ending. However, the theories about JGL taking over as Batman are compelling. The more likely scenario, I think, is more along the lines of Batman Beyond, where Bruce Wayne is out of commission as Batman, but takes more of a mentor role over JGL as the new Batman. That would also leave the door slightly ajar in case the next film wants to keep going with the current storyline instead of doing a complete reboot -- since it essentially would be a reboot (a new "Year One" with a new Batman) but without the cheesiness of yet another start from scratch and origin story.

  • May 1, 2012 8:07 AM CST

Here's the thing I think a lot of people are forgetting

    by sambafreak13

Whether you love him or not, Christopher Nolan is easily one of the most talented film makers working today...and we have him making Batman films for us. Just think about that for a minute, and what some of the alternatives could have been...you don't have to love his "vision" but I for one feel pretty damn lucky I'm about to see a third Batman film made by a guy who REALLY knows what the fuck he's doing.

  • May 1, 2012 8:10 AM CST

    @mikeywood

    by sambafreak13

Well said...in fairness, there really are a lot of people who'd like to simply discuss the movie in a semi-intelligent way but it can be challenging given how much nonsense gets posted. So what is the solution? What is a good alternative?

  • May 1, 2012 8:14 AM CST

Don't forget Batman (89) got alot of things right.

    by Nerd Rage

Batman was finally a badass again, the Batmobile was iconic, the imagery in general was iconic, the dialogue was memorable, the music was memorable and inspirational, the costume is still among the best ever wore by Batman, casting Jack Nicholson as the Joker is something that simply needed to happen and the performance is still creepy, unsettling and classic Joker, and the movie proved a darker Batman could be a huge blockbuster. So lets show some respect for a classic superhero movie that paved the way and is still unmatched in many ways.

Yes, there are glimpses of Knightfall, but the winter weather, the look of the kids on the bus and the bridge blowing up gives me shades of No Man's Land. Too bad there isn't a more complete Bat-verse (since it isn't the DC Universe at all). We need Oracle, Cassandra, Nightwing, Tim Drake, etc. Oh well, perhaps Bats and Cats can hook up and produce a Helena for a future feature.

"Objective for once"?? I'm always objective. I always judge a film based on it's own merits and not on any hype machine surrounding it. And I ALWAYS wait until I see a fucking film before I condemn it. Nolan's track record speaks for itself, unless you're a contrarian fuck, or the alternative being you simply don't like his work (the answer in this place is usually the former). The trailer maybe "FLAT" to you, but it speaks volumes of what's to come. By "dynamic" you mean "Give the whole movie away with lots of plot spoilers and scenery"? There is much, MUCH to love about this trailer. And if you can't see that, oh well, sorry for you. Any normal, non-AICN person I've spoken to regarding this trailer has gotten chills.

  • Along with Prometheus this is the only fantasy movie this year aimed at people with IQ's. We'll miss Nolan when he's gone and Batman is reduced to the campy dayglo cgi of marvel once again, oh well it was good while it lasted Bat's....

Please. It was Jack Nicholson being Jack. The Batman costume was a fucking joke! He was, for all intents and purposes, a statue in that thing. The music was the best part of that film, the second best part was the Batmobile. That's about it. Mr. Mom was not as bad as the pre-film detractors had screamed about, but he sure as fuck wasn't Batman or Bruce Wayne. And Prince? Really? The only thing that is "unmatched" about Batman '89 is....hmmm....can't think of a single thing.

The movie will be fine, etc, etc. In fact, I think it will be fantastic. However, The Avengers will make more money. WB is going to look at the numbers. Watchmen (which I loved), cost a bunch to make. Green Lantern - which tanked - cost a bunch to make. The Nolan Trilogy cost a bunch to make. Marvel movies? Not so much and they're still making comparable profits and churning them out faster. DC answer? Do the Marvel formula. Effect = cheaper churned out movies which, if successful, will get us closer to Justice League. Dunno if i want that. Somebody above said it best: Avengers = Flick. TDKR = Film As soon as you see the first few shots of Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises, you know where the money went. Avengers? And again, I'm a marvel fan and want to love my midnight show - like ALL of the Marvel movies after Iron Man 2 - look really cheap but fun.

Goyer wrote Begins. Batman could not be found in ledger's movie that was part 2. And all the talk is about Bane in this film with again...Batman nowhere to be seen

  • The Dark Knight was full of stupid moments - How long was Batman standing at the back of the interrogation room without anyone noticing? Why does he just leave The Joker to terrorise everyone at the party? Why does the film go on for half an hour longer than it needs too? Why does Nolan insist on shooting all the second unit stuff himself, he's a clunky action director. Etc

  • May 1, 2012 8:37 AM CST

Hard to believe people are actually pissing on this trailer

    by Jaster Mareel

Cuz, it's pretty fucking excellent. It's beautifully shot and edited and implies themes and arcs that will broaden the Dark Knight universe and seemingly bring a real empathy and meaningfullness to Batman as a character. I'm over my problems with Tom Hardy's Bane. I'm just looking for a wild fuckin' ride that will explore the heights of filmmaking and make me FEEL something in a superhero film. How can you not be excited about that?

  • May 1, 2012 8:37 AM CST

    WOAH! That Was EXCELLENT!

    by fain88

I was already super-excited about this movie, but now I am double-super-excited about this movie. And those exploding bridges, I just realized--is this going to draw from the No Man's Land story arc in the comics? It seems to make too much sense not to. And I don't care if he's Robin, Red Robin, Nightwing, Azreal, Batwing or even fucking Bat-Mite, just as long as JGL is SOME kind of superhero by the end of this, and I'll be happy. And with all the *SPOILERY* info on Ra's daughter being involved, I still feel like we've only seen the tip of the iceberg in these trailers. Oooooh....double-super-excited!!

RE: Jack Nicholson playing himself as the Joker

    by Nerd Rage

If you were born to play the Joker then you should allow your personality to show in your performance. There are plenty of things unmatched about Batman (89). The iconic imagery, the memorable Batman score, the badass Batmobile and Batsuit, the memorable dialogue, the suspenseful/exciting action scenes in a Bat-film, etc. Nolan's Batman films were elevated several levels by Heath Ledgers performance. Without it, these films would never have reached the legendary status they enjoy today.

    Yeah...Batman '89.....not so much

    by Jaster Mareel

I remember coming out of the theater after seeing that and thinking =That was it?= It was pretty underwhelming. Michael Keaton did the best job that MICHAEL KEATON could do.....but it sure the fuck wasn't Batman/Bruce Wayne. Sorry but Bruce Wayne is not a short, skinny, ugly, wisecracking jewish guy. He wasn't then and he's not now. It was an epic miscast regardless of teh fact that Keaton is a good actor and did everything he could to make it work. Jack Nicholson did an epic portrayal of CEASAR ROMERO Joker, but it's pretty silly compared to the mind-bending version Heath Ledger invented. Everything in Batman '89 looks like a set....because it is. It's all very fake-looking and forced and frankly ridiculous. The effects are also pretty crappy.Think of the painful model shots of the Batwing and that fucking bizarre shot of the Joker falling from the building. What is that, claymation? Hey I like the movie, don't get me wrong. It was nice to get a semi-serious take on Batman at the time. But Nolan just fucking BURIES it. One thing I did like about the Burton films and would like to see make a comeback is the fantasy element. I want Man-Bat, Killer Croc and Clayface.

    Re; DAYLIGHT SCENES

    by batmancw

Those complaining may need to be reminded that this is Nolan's FINAL bat-flick & the "Legend Ends" aspect suggests that it is Bruce's last? turn as the Batman. The city that has rejected him, now needs him to save them & he cant just wait for Bane to be nice enough to attack at night--he has to take the fight TO Bane--day or night

    by havehope

Don't care what the threat is, or how serious it is. This is not reality, this is a FILM. FICTION. Batman's world should be comprised of darkness and night. Putting him out in the day makes him a VERY easy target. He trained as a ninja and last I checked...ninjas operate at night. How he can't be overwhelmed in that massive brawl in BROAD DAYLIGHT just does not make any sense.

  • What a cynical age we live in where it has to be DARK to be good. Nicholsons Joker is stellar and if you can't appreciate it on a different level than Ledgers joker than you need to take a step back.

Are you seriously asking how he can't be overwhelmed in a brawl in broad daylight? Umm, because he's not the only one fighting Bane's mob? Maybe because he's trained to fight multiple opponents? Maybe because he's Batman and has that "aura" you speak of? That is just a seriously stupid attempt by you to take the sheen off a film you haven't even fucking seen yet. Keep clinging to Batman '89 where we are supposed to believe that someone who can barely move could fight anything other than a breeze. Or where the Batjet gets taken down by a single bullet (and yes, P-51s could be taken down in WWII by a single bullet if one struck it's cooling system, but this is the fucking BATJET). The list could go on. If you have so much pre-film hate for the movie you haven't even seen yet, why the fuck bother to see it? Just go pop in Batman '89 and be wowed by Keaton's aura.

    by amrisharmpit

Hopefully combining the best elements of each. Focus on Batman as the main character and a more comic-booky feel (BB); an epic scope, great villain, and sophisticated themes (TDK); and some narrative twists (both). If that's the case it could be the best of the Nolan trilogy. Cinematography looks superb, per usual for Wally Pfister.

My god. Context is the issue at hand here. A. Have you ever been in a massive brawl? Do you think that they would all have the time/ability to just target Batman without someone else taking a shot at THEM? While there are hundreds or thousands of people on Batman's side fighting against Bane's mob??? It's a BRAWL, shit hits the fan and rarely do you have time to stop and figure shit out in a big fight. B. Daylight. So, if the shit hits the fan in Gotham, during the DAY, Batman is simply to say "Gah! It's bright out, I can't go outside and fight for the city I swore an oath to protect!" Seriously, it's about fucking CONTEXT, of which you have NONE. That is just some of the stupidest bitching I've seen here in a while. Wrath_of_fett has it right...

Oldman, Eckhart and Ledger saved TDK from mediocrity

    by performingmonkey

Bale and Caine were pretty good in BB but Nolan gave them a raw deal in TDK in favour of putting the villains as centre stage. Understandable, yes, but he also delivered an underwhelming movie as a whole, saved particularly by Ledger (the interrogation scene is so great, it being Bale's best moment in the movie too). Inception was IMO equally as bland. The Prestige and Begins remain his benchmark.

    Prediction - RE: JGL

    by SunsetLament

This movie takes place 7 or 8 years after TDK (we already know that). JGL is an already adopted (as a teenager) and now adult Dick Grayson who is on the police force. Bruce is captured and disappears (presumed dead) and Grayson decides he's gonna become Batman. The line by Alfred about "I'm not gonna bury another Wayne" is said to JGL to try and talk him out of it.

  • Dude--While I totally get the point that Batman is a night time crime fighter & he relies on darkness and fear to help in his battle(I've been a fan for about 45 years now)--as i said in the earlier post--Are you suggesting he just wait until Bane is nice enough to attack at night? Since this is Nolan's final film & "the Legend Ends" has been such a big part of the marketing, i suspect by then end of the movie all of Gotham will know that Bruce is/has been Batman & he'll "hang up the cowl"--either because his job is "done", he's too badly injured to continue, and/or because someone else--JGL?--is taking over. As for the massive daylight brawl--I'm pretty sure that the cops are on HIS side, so it's not just him versus everyone on the battlefield (re; the being overwhelmed part), as that sure looks like it's probably from the final battle of the movie with "the fate" of Gotham at stake & it does appear that night is falling when he and Bane start to duke it out.

How come Joker did not do all this mayhem in the day in Batman or in Tdk? Why didn't Penguin do all his attacks in the day? Why didn't Ducard do all his attacks in the day? It's a matter of artistic choice. Yeah, it does make things more serious putting Batman out in the day, but it's how you show it. From the way I saw it in the trailer, he's just fighting in clear daylight with a bit of sun....which removes any and all feeling of epicness or hugeness. If it was raining, or stormy or HEAVY sleet, that would have added to the drama. But it just seems so plain

    Batman will not die!

    by Kakii

I really dont think theyll kill him off etc, the story comes full circle so by the end of it Batman will have Gotham seeing as a hero again, Gordon will either come clean publicly about Dent or hail Batman as a hero. The end will mirror BB in which Batman says I "never thanked you", Gordon will reply "and youll never have too". Batman will glance away and Gordon will pull a Batman vanishing act, Bats will then actually smile then jump off the building gliding off. The Bat signal will also be fixed. Look at how the DK played with its own title at the end, this is called the Dark Knight Rises, not fails and dies, his legend ends because he becomes Gothams true hero. JGL will infact be Gordons replacement or will mirror Gordon from BB

Almost as ridiculous as if they did keep all the action to night. This is a complete TAKE-OVER of Gotham, with Bane's men in tumblers patrolling the streets 24/7. It's brilliant of Bane to do his dirty work in the day, it takes away Batman's advantage of using stealth and fear. I'll take Christopher Nolan's "artistic choices" over a talkbackers any day.

  • emerge as Gotham City's trusted protector again...and his legendary career as a true superhero will begin. I will gladly, excitedly see the film as I've seen them all. I like Nolans dark feel of the films that match the books I've read. I just would have preferred to have costumes that represent what I grew up with in the comics I read. I understand trying to make it more realistic and not campy. Somehow Marvel has found out how to not make camp using full colored costumes. I kept thinking they would add Bane's venom muscle enhancements in Post production, this trailer lets me believe that a normal man just kicked Batmans ass. I pray i'm wrong. Let's hope WB wakes up and gives us Superheros that are suppose to be ridiculous set in the real world. Otherwise we are going to get the Justice League in drab, textured, dark costumes because it's more "realistic". Not a hater, just a dreamer.

Bat-shaped planes and 7 foot tall bad guys...

    by Mikey Wood

...do not belong in the 'universe' Nolan has created. These are not 'comic book movies' (BEGINS being the closest), these are crime dramas that just so happen to feature a man in a bat-suit. It's been said multiple times: You can't compare the Nolan BATMAN films with the Burton BATMAN films. Two different things altogether. The Burton movies were comic-book fantasy films, the Nolan movies have taken a comic book concept and placed it into a more 'realistic' world. Is it plausible? Absolutely. Is it likely? Not at all. But the point is, this Batman's gear is utalitarian, not flashy. His car doesn't need to be shaped like a bat. Neither does his aircraft. That would look ridiculous. There is no Robin. There is no Nightwing. There won't be. It doesn't WORK here. Frankly, I'm surprised they threw in Catwoman which is, really, my only concern and it's not even that big of a concern. I don't give a shit if Bane is seven foot tall and powered by Venom in the comics just like I didn't care that the Joker wore make-up instead of having bleached skin. It wouldn't work here.

  • May 1, 2012 10:54 AM CST

    Love Nolan, BUT...

    by joel007

...this basically looks like the Dark Knight all over again. The whole "really frightening villain deciding it's Gotham's time to fall so he goes on a terror campaign, city caught in the crossfire between him and Batman" thing feels like a major rehash of the last movie. Now this is just a trailer and I hope I'm wrong about that. And I'll say it again, the catwoman character is was and will always be ridiculous. It was a huge mistake using her, and let's just say it... conceptually, Bane is not a strong villain. They shot their wad in the last movie. THIS should have been the joker movie. The EPIC confrontation between hero and his biggest nemesis to decide it all. Oh well...

  • ...the final product is surely going to be. Pretty pumped for this but gotta accept it's gonna be talky and exposition-heavy and not balls-out action from start to finish and that's fine... ...as long as there's a They Live-style 20 minute brawl with suplexes and legdrops somewhere, I'll be happy. Thought Avengers handled the hero/team dynamic fantastically and award it a highly entertaining 8/10

  • May 1, 2012 10:57 AM CST

    Cant compare!

    by Kakii

You just cant compare Nolans Batman to the likes of the Avengers, they're 2 different animals. Nolans are grounded in being actually possible and its been done vextremely well so far. The Avengers is straight out the pages of the comics and shows that a superhero comic universe can be made believable and you can put heroes together and make an awesome film. TDK and The Avengers are both game changers in their own ways and have set the bar extremely high for future movies. So for us fans it can only be a good thing.

  • What, Commissioner Gordon (or better yet, his, I dunno...DAUGHTER) wasn't everyman enough for the plot, that they had to invent a new character? There aren't enough Batman cop characters already? Or is Gary Oldman getting screwed out of screen time, and spending the show in a hospital bed? WTF?

    Re: Batman vs. super heroes

    by Clio

I have gotten really tired of super hero movies, after many years of watching them.....that's right, I don't intend on see The Avengers. But Batman is something different. He has no super powers.....he is the embodiment of justice with an iron fist. These Christian Bale Batman movies have a compelling story to tell.......it's really drama with some great action added. And that's unlike most mindless action movies that have just some witty dialogue added. So I'll be in line for Batman. Your mileage may vary.

In TDK I knew it was Chicago and not Gotham. And now seeing The Manhattan Bridge explode makes me see New York City instead of Gotham. It may work to make things look more realistic. But maybe he should have stayed in Chicago for continuity.

  • ...so all the stakes are ratcheted up yet another gear to it's logical conclusion! Plus it looks like he gets a bit more support in the field in this one which opens it up some as well. I have complete faith in Nolan that this movie will be just as good as the previous films, but referring to this as the greatest trilogy of movies of all time is a joke. You haven't seen the film yet. Back to the Future Part III was the worst in that great trilogy. Return of the Jedi was the worst in that great trilogy. Need I mention Alien 3 (which I prefer to Alien). Still we have a great movie to look forward to. Hopefully it will get the same rave reviews that Avengers has been getting. "I'm Gunther's shrinky-dink"? OK, sorry, the voice is fine and the trailer makes the film look lovely and is made with real craft. But Batman 89 had the Wee Purple Fella on the soundtrack. Not some fey Satie-derivative plinky-plonky. Moderately stoked.

Ha!...caught Matthew Modine at 2:00....interesting, I see the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge blow up but the 59th Street Bridge is the bridge where JGL and the school bus are, stays intact?. Also, the 59th street bridge is the bridge where the Batman stands atop..... also, did Dr.Pavel create the mechanism that blew up Hines Field and possibility threatens all of Gotham?

Get this: They 'fix' Bane's voice...

    by AidanJames

and I have absolutely no fucking clue what his first line in that trailer was... Yet on the shitty bootlegs of the Prologue I understood every fucking line perfectly. I sort of liked how in those his voice sounded like he was constantly fighting to speak through pain. ...that said. This works too. Just ironic that I can't understand what "Gotham's recktitty" is.

Location Shooting Chicago vs Pitt and NYC

    by ForgetTheMoney

is it possible that Nolan moved the location shooting from Chicago and Pittsburgh so I shouldn't be confused with Man of Steele which was shot in Chicago?

  • May 1, 2012 11:39 AM CST

Good lord, some of those shots are fucking gorgeous

    by Von_Trierstein

I guess Wally Pfister could shoot Bruce Wayne taking a crap and looking longingly out the window and make it gorgeous, though. Freakin IMAX, man. And screw all this competition crap... what a freakin' amazing summer for fantasy movies this will be. Seriously, I don't think this will happen again for a long time, so get over your negative crap and just enjoy it while it's here. Oh and fuck all of you with your expectations. You see a movie and then decide if it's good or not, not the other way around. Douchebags. WAAAAAH!!!

    No

    by FadedLineVigil

    1. Batman vs Bane shortly after TDK 2. Broken back 3. Gotham goes into ruins via Bane; Catwoman in interim role as protector 4. Wayne reemerges but is powerless and torn to stop Bane 5. Alfred is killed in a Bane attack and Bruce looses it; begins training, forming his attack 6. Talia is the real ringmaster here, including power over Bane 7. Batman comes back utterly baddass putting the hurt on/killing many of Bane's terrorists, including Talia. Bane goes rogue. 8. Catwoman dies. Batman clearly kills Bane. Bruce stages Batman and Bane dying together. 9. Bruce starts training JGL to take up the Batman down the line I speak the truth.

I guess it is better than the shitty CGI Gotham of Batman Begins. Maybe it's because I also associate NYC with Spiderman. So to see Batman on the Queensboro Bridge was different. And why is The Man of Steel shooting in Chicago. They should have left Chicago for Batman and chose another city for Superman. San Francisco perhaps? Minor gripes. This movie will make a killing. Especially if a TV movie like The Hunger Games can make 300 mil domestic. This movie should top TDK.

    by Dr_PepperSpray

Listen, I get it. Batman hits guys, and does all sorts of Ninja action moves. It's true. However, at the heart of Batman is a film Noir, and Batman, though a costumed weirdo, is a private eye trying to solve a particular case.

I'll give Nolan a bit of credit, he tried to add a few elements of investigative work, but it never proved as anything more then muddling between interesting characters chewing on dialog and batman reacting to events. I liked the Dark Knight, but it wasn't all THAT.

Admiral Nelson you couldnt be more correct!

    by ShakaLaka Lambo

I agree , hear, hear! I personally wouldn't have used God's name in quite such snl derogatory way, but thats just my opinion. Your statement had such strength personally I think the language actually destracted from your point, . Again I agree with your point though , Lynch me if you want but I'm much more excited anticipating Amazing Spidey than I am for TDKR. I've been down with Nolan since day one, but for the life of me I can't figure out the Anne Hathaway /Catwoman. I just can't understand but I trust Nolan so I'll wait to see and then make up my mind. Just a thought , in the Knightfall series when Bane broke ol Brucie's back, ol' Jean something-another became the Bat, could that be james gordon levitt's part? Im fairly certain I screwed old boy's name up. Anyway Amazing Spidey is going to be telling us a Spidey story thats never been been seen on film, The REAL Spider-man, not the Raimi trilogy, with MJ first, organic web-shooters, (which didn't bother me near as much as Spidey's complete lack of dialogue with his bad guys (especially the trademark wise cracks) and the Mighty Morphin Power Goblin!) So Admiral your right, the trailer is weak, but I'll for sho be there opening night Stranger "Just one thing ' Dude'.... The Dude : "Yeah, whats that? " Stranger : "Do ya have to use so many cuss words?" The Dude : "What the Fuck you talkin about?" Stanger :"[smiles] Have it your way Dude."

best post on here in quite some time - and i agree whole heartedly - up until a month ago every single person on here pretty much said the Avengers is gonna suck and whedon is a fag - but now the movie is a few days a away critics are diggin it and all of a sudden everyones got whedons manhood in their mouths and Avengers is going to be LIKE THE BEST EVER - and since the first teaser for TDKR came out people were going crazy for it and now the have the ability to dissent against it so they do so - and now TDK is meh (i like BB just a tad better, but TDK still fucking rocks ) and that trailer was anything but boring you simple fucks - it didnt have HULK jumping out of the inside of a building to kill CGI aliens this much is true - but that trailer gave u the general pathos of the film without really giving anything away - i was struck how ominous it was and feel like whatever happens it should be the capstone to the Nolan films - who now apparently sucks now too

I'm not a big Batman fan, nor am I really a big superhero fan, but I like the level of gravity that the trailer implies. I'm sure it'll have its share of action, but I like the more down-to-earth threat that Bane represents. I'm sure the Avengers'll be fun, but I get the impression that Batman will be much richer, emotionally. It really is a fun year for big tentpole movies. I haven't been interested in this many movies in a very, very long time.

  • Really emperor_was_a_jerk, who cares? if the movie stinks it doesn't make money, basically. And if you had 2 neurons to rub together you would know that they work VERY hard in the film industry to produce what they produce. And no, no one is saying you should lap up every drop of crap thrown at you from Hollywood-- the point is that negative people who ALWAYS complain and whine and are never happy or looking forward to any movie ever or bitch about every single frame of every single trailer and complain about all of this, are annoying whining little pricks who are better off living on a tiny island in the Pacific alone with no electronics. What's more, I bet you anything this whiny little girls will go and see all the movies they bitch about ANYWAY ! So I say to them, open up your pocketbooks, move aside you tampons, pick up and apply your lipstick and drop to your knees and suck you fellow whiny little pussy's dick, douches ! I'm happy to throw money at Hollywood if after 2 hours I was pretty entertained and had a good experience.

Vameon, I agree about the cinematography

    by amrisharmpit

Has a cinematographer ever been nominated for an entire trilogy? Pfister will be, for sure. He is as good as it gets, but of course Nolan gets credit as well for his vision. Pfister once said in an interview that Nolan was one of the most technically proficient directors he's ever worked with.

  • I mean through all the crap we had to witness. Now we get what appears to be at least TWO epic Super-Hero Movies! This is pure AWESOME lol.

  • On just a technical level, his photography and lighting seems to be better with each new film, him and Nolan are pushing themselves. I can't imagine him not getting another nom for this and the 3rd for the trilogy, I wouldn't even rule a possible close win either.

    by Admiral Nelson

Dude, I'm not talking about blindly accepting whatever Hollywood dishes out, and you know it. I'm talking about the joyless twats who claim to be movie fans, yet they're incapable of ever being positive publicly about ANYTHING, and saying "hey, that looks cool -- I'm looking forward to this!" They think that by ALWAYS being proactively negative, they somehow come across as "smarter," or "cooler," instead of simply being a reactionary dipshit poser who is probably really unpleasant to be around. People watching a trailer and automatically spouting, "it's gonna suck because I hate this tiny little detail!" are just fucking morons. Criticize a film all you want AFTER you see it, but stop playing the "I'm too cool to ever like anything!" game because you're afraid that your equally-douchebaggy friends are going to diss you for -- God forbid -- actually liking and anticipating something. It's as if an ultimate negative emo woman mated with a loud, sweaty uber-nerd, and their cursed offspring was simultaneously obsessed with geek stuff, yet felt the need to publicly attack it at every opportunity, lest they lose their street cred with others of their basement-dwelling ilk. (Note: this isn't directed at you specifically, Emperor; I'm just clarifying my position.)

    Poor trailer for TDKR

    by darren

That trailer seems very poor to me. Revealing The Bat before the final pay-off is insulting really. Hathaway's line delivery sounds terrible and Bane just doesn't feel right. The mask, the voice and the leather jacket seem off. On the plus side JGL seems up for it and the wide shot of the bridges being destroyed looked great. Hope the film delivers more than this trailer has.

Needs more Batman/Wayne. Needs more this: http://youtu.be/Uk280jVuH1w This scene is better than any non-Joker scene in TDK. FACT Also Liam's Ra's was on par with the Joker as a villain. Both were of epic caliber for different reasons.

  • May 1, 2012 3:14 PM CST

Hey look: A real movie, by a real film-maker...

    by Joe Jones

and not a TV hack. And I already saw Avengers and it was made-for-TV looking, edited by suits and mouse-kateers/commitee, whedon garbage. The definition of dispozable. Watch the numbers plummet next week, whedonites, and cry on here when TDKR bitch-smacks avengers back to TBS where it belongs and will be shown on a loop for decades to come. Marvel gave whedon a t-ball to swing at and the tv hack still barely got it out of the infield. He just doesn't belong in the pros. TDKR is pro film-making. Nolan and crew are going to take us to school this summer. Avengers? Just sarcasm, snark, RDJ being grating, and a made-for-TV look and feel, like whedon's whole resume.

  • ...I can't follow fandom all the way to proclaiming it great art that is somehow superior to everything else because...well, just because. It's Nolan! It's gritty and grim! that's not enough. A somewhat insular community of comic and graphic-novel fans (I'm reminded of a certain MST3K skit here) has convinced itself it's dealing with High Art, but no. It's a comic-book film, one that deals with fairly obvious, well-traveled themes in a fairly broad, ham-fisted way. It's very stylish, very constipated, and creates a very strong and pervasive atmosphere. I didn't think BB had any exceptional qualities, and I thought TDK had only one at the end of the day: the anarchy-take on the Joker that Ledger played so well, and how it created a really striking sense of law desperately holding on to a rapidly unraveling situation. It painted some nice generalities in the way it contrasted Dent, Joker, and Bats. It didn't live up to the setup, but it had a marvelous middle act. And this is not a self-hating comic-book rant. I think comics are beautiful and a legitimate form of art, albeit pop art or craft (which I say as a compliment, as I think those are the most real and relevant forms of art these days). These Bat films are good for the same reason - and to the same extent - that comics are good: they take big themes and translate them into something dynamic and entertaining. So my editorial point is to enjoy the heck out of it, but don't take on any airs that this is one hair better than, say, Avengers on criteria that's just superficial in the end. The cool, grim illusion of seriousness has riddled "serious" comics since the mid-80s at least, but its own self-seriousness is not above being called out.

While your points re: the other villains are good ones ( hey, CRIME is easier at night--demolishing a city as Bane appears to intend doesnt require stealth--just manpower), I still think that the POINT of having Bats show up to fight in the daytime is that: (1) it IS his final turn as Batman(not suggesting he dies, just hangs up or passes on the cowl) & (2)that things would HAVE to be pretty friggin serious for him to fight in broad daylight side by side with the GCPD who prior to Bane's arrival were once again "enemies"--Gordon excepted, of course. That said--I'm STILL not convinced that the main BIG fight doesn't happen while the sun is setting & perhaps concludes once it's night--Nolan is very tricksy in the way he edits his trailers & after SO MUCH spoiler stuff showing up during filming to suggest daytime scenes, it wont surprise me a bit if they have digitally graded them to look like night when we see the flick in theaters.

  • May 1, 2012 4:15 PM CST

It does look like Batman's gonna die in this

    by centilope

That whole "not yet" thing. Death is the ultimate sacrifice isn't it? He took the blame for Joker's and Two Face's crimes so Dent's "tragic, heroic death" would inspire people to do good, make Gotham a city of peace which worked for 8 years. Batman will become the hero Dent was supposed to be and he wanted him to be. People will find out the truth about Batman's sacrifices after his death and he will "rise" to a legendary status which in time will lead to many more years of peace for the city. How pretentious.

  • This movie looks underwhelming when compared to TDK, I just don't get any chill when watching the trailer.

  • May 1, 2012 4:17 PM CST

    Batman SHOULD be a Detective

    by joel007

I mean like a real detective. He should tail cheating husbands, do surveillance on people suspected of workmans' comp fraud. Deliver court summons. Pee in an empty gatorade bottle while surveilling a two timing wife. Batman is a Detective... Like hell. And just to head off the screaming-- yeah I know you meant he's more of a police detective. But, no, not really...

  • May 1, 2012 4:21 PM CST

Ferry scene in TDK was awful

    by centilope

A tank like batmobile weighing a few tons jumping on rooftops in BB was more believable than that scene. The bad guys on the ferry would blow up the "innocents" without hesitation. A mother would have surely blown up a ferry full of serial killers and rapists if it meant her innocent child surviving. This scene did not work for me at all.

  • PROMETHEUS, THE AVENGERS, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. That's pretty amazing. I've enjoyed Nolan's take on Batman... now I'd like to see one that isn't so personal. I've never really given a shit about Batman/Bruce Wayne as a character. I'd love to see a Batman movie with no love interest and none of the goings on have anything to do with Bruce Wayne at all. It's just Batman kicking ass and saving the day.

  • May 1, 2012 4:26 PM CST

Was listening to batman-on-film podcast last week

    by Steve Lamarre

And all three guys on the show were ranting about how Nolan's new film will crush Avengers at the box office. And, it probably will. But who the fuck cares. Way to preoccupied with money they'll never see. Just enjoy both films! This will be the best movie summer in years. I use to love the b-o-f site some years ago. But now the site is so riddled with pop ups and ads and Jett's Bat-Nolan-fascism it fucking nauseates me.

  • If you don't have a clue how to shoot action hire someone who does or watch Hard Boild or Fist of Legend and do your best to emulate that. Shaking the camera and closeups during action scenes that cost tens of millions of dollars and months of preparation is beyond stupid. If your spending that much money, time and effort then please for the love of God, LET ME SEE IT!

    The ferry scene

    by bongo dummy

Most of the movie was about how far people would go if they suddenly had the power to do something good or bad. In the ferry scene, everyone involved realized the consequences of acting on the ability. But, the thing is even when the vote was held on the boat of =innocents= it was one man who could make the call and he didn't want to decide. It was the same for the other ferry of =guilty= people. There was one main person who would likely choose. In contrast the Joker, who never hesitated at killing one or more people in one quick action, it was showing that some people would consider their options. To further that, look at the characters of Harvey Dent and Two-Face. It was about making choices with the power one had.

  • May 1, 2012 4:41 PM CST

    This trailer

    by bongo dummy

Does anyone remember the scene from an earlier trailer with Gordon in a hospital bed? There's going to be a lot more to this movie than anything the trailers are revealing. So, it is pointless to break it down with What Ifs, like this oooh, is Robin or Nightwing in it or if there is going to be a replacement for Batman. Did the early trailers for TDK reveal the vigilante Batmen? or, that the Scarecrow was in it? Or just how long the dang movie would last? Sheesh, it takes forever.

  • May 1, 2012 4:43 PM CST

I guess Bane took Ras Al-Ghul's death really hard

    by drewlicious

At least thats when I gather from the trailer. Why else would Bruce Wayne need extra special punishment? As for someone else taking up the mantle for future movies.....I hope not. Bruce Wayne is Batman and no one else. We like the character not the costume. I still think the best reboot idea was doing "Batman Beyond" as a feature. It completely frees the story from being compared to previous installments. Plus, a never before seen on film rogue's gallery. Blight would look really cool on screen.

  • May 1, 2012 4:54 PM CST

    I like how Jim Cameron

    by MajorBludd

has had some influence on every major film this summer. "There's a storm coming" the Mexican says to Sarah Conner. Obviously Batman is Nolans' Sarah and Catwoman is the old mexican man. The Amazing Spiderman had Iron Jim as 3D consultant. Prometheus has more than a few nods to Aliens, as well as Iron Jim showing Scott the benefits of 3D in person back when he was shooting Avatar. Whedon has said in numerous interviews that Jimmy was his biggest influence on capturing scope and setting up the action spectacle. All that while Jim's still making bank on Titanic and traversing the depths. Jim wins.

That one line from the trailer doesn't sound like Bale. Contrast it with "This isn't a car"

  • I'm confused, every petty criminal knows better that they should hide their identity to not get framed. Hell, she can come up with high tech bullshit but can't come up with at least a ski mask to not leave her hair around the crime scenes? I'm a big fan of Batman mythos, hell I'm a HUGE fan of Batman Begins, but why the hell Catwoman is acting like an amateur criminal? Why the hell isn't she wearing her cat cowl to avoid people to identify her DNA through all the hair that she leaves at the crime scenes? Realism and the Julie Newmar look. For the cat burglar? Give me a fucking break Nolanites. This doesn't look good at all. If The Avengers doesn't look "real"enough to you, congratulations, it's based out of a fucking comic book. The problem is if you don't realize that Nolan's Batman is just as unrealistic as ANY other movie based of superheroes out there. I'll give this movie a chance, but stop preaching how real and brilliant this is. Because deep inside you know that you're defending this bullcrap of a trailer and praying this doesn't suck.

  • I'll enjoy TDKR for what it is, but I'm going to watch like I did with The Avengers: I'll wait to see if I like it or not. The Avengers turned out to be the best experience I've ever had with cinema in my entire life, I can only wish that Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises are just as good. I won't be fooled by a trailer, but anyone saying that this trailer makes them all kinds of excited are lying to themselves. .....above about James Cameron are a 'tad' excessive. Prometheus has some nods to Aliens. Huh??????????? You mean Aliens has nods to Scott's Alien. 'There's a storm coming/rising/whatever' are just several words of coincidental dialogue between both films. 'Jim wins' - you what? He may actually 'win', when he learns how to truly direct people/actors - which he is way behind Ridley Scott and Chris Nolan on........ and finally makes a decent film, since Terminator 2.

on a civil level - why is it a bullcrap trailer and why would anyone pray that it doesnt suck - evidence suggest that it wont - if you didnt like the first two then of course you arent going to be wowed or thrilled or excited and if you did like the first two movies I am curious as to why you think that this one happens to be so lame - i went back and looked at the final TDK trailer everyone earlier was raving about and saying it was so much better but the pacing and story reveals were almost identical to this one - i guess if you were a fan of the first two movies how you can get on a soapbox and say the trailer sucked - thematically its a continuance and visually its another step up i believe or at least on par going in a slightly different direction color wise im definitely on the train with everyone else saying that after Nolan is done a standalone batman movie where there is no origin no trilogy story arc just have Batman already Batman and have a cool noir crime thriller where Batman is just doing Batman - Nolan's films allow everyone to almost be a main character - everyone in BB and TDK have as much screen time as batman or more but this is the universe he created and from BB to TDK id say the response has been positive - so dont bitch about people being Nolan apologists when he has done very little to suggest that hes going to knock it out of the park im a huge nolan fan and some of his movies have logic flaws that are black hole-ish but theyve always entertained and made you think which doesnt make him a perfect director but who is?

Check the Weyland Industries website. Check the security page. Powerloader and Pulse Rifle (ok "storm" rifle). That's a nod to Aliens no? One that acknowledges Aliens as being canon. Aliens, a film written and directed by James Cameron. "There's a storm coming" is probably the most memorable (and decipherable) line in the trailer. It would be great if Cameron didn't write it first. Tighten up.

  • Sounds like a close mic'd and heavily compressed Ian McKellan, sticks out like a pair of dog's nads. Huge fan of Nolan's DK, but in the wake of the Prometheus trailers and virals, this all seems pretty pedestrian(and a tad too familiar).

Why is this site full of such film hate if most of us profess to love cinema? I'm 47 years old and get as excited as a 12 year old every time I go to the movies. I've never lost the love.

Well, there you go.....you said it's on a website, and not necessarily in the film, per se. And even if it was in the film, well, haven't you seen films with in-joke nods? A 'nod' is not 'paying homage to, or venerating before someone...' like you seem to define it. And I mean, please, 'there's a storm whatever-ing' isn't Shakespeare, Tom Stoppard, Aaron Sorkin, Woody Allen....and isn't going down in history as some kind of iconic line. Arnie's stuff maybe....cos it was Arnie speaking. And....as you said earlier, Cameron is still pratting and dicking around with Titanic.......yep, even now.....my, how I admire how he looks forward...that bloke isn't 'that' far off from becoming George Lucas (with a touch of Jacques Cousteau).

Be sure to tell them that James Cameron came up with the line - it's just mind-blowing!!!!!

    Bale can't act.

    by Devon Knyght

Batman / Bruce Wayne are two people living in the same body but Nolan never really explores that part of the story. Bale could never pull off the dual characters because he has the acting depth of a thimble. The reason that the last Batman movie did well is because of Heath Ledgers death. This one will not draw anywhere near that, oh yeah and Bane is not a villain that anyone other than serious Batman fans know. Everyone had heard of the Joker. I didn't go and see the second move so I really don't see why I would go and see this one.

However, I believe the film will be pretty damn good. A dark, depressing, downer...with a healthy dose of pretense...but good nonetheless. "Fun" doesn't enter the equation with these films.

I am mostly enamored with the look and style of the film. Nolan really does push the medium forward.

    TOO SOON!

    by Buck Turgidson

This shall be awesome. I don't want it to end though! Oh, well, Mad Max reboot's right around the corner.

  • It's an all-out fight for survival, but we all have to wait for two guys to get dressed up in costumes and fistfight to determine the ultimate outcome for everyone. I'm hoping it can't be that simple, but until that's proven, I'm going under the assumption this is Rocky IV with funny masks. And probably a much less entertaining training sequence.

  • And I would punch it. For the record, I don't hate Nolan, TDK, or any if you, but geezus get over it already. It was ok. Now the Prometheus int'l trailer. WOW! Let's talk.

Don't get a lot of the negative comments about this...

    by Andrew Coleman

That was a strong trailer. Hathaway to me seems like a great Catwoman. I still believe the League of Shadows will be deeply involved in this and trailer doesn't even hint at that... My only problem is that I really did believe Two-Face would show up again.... Now this is going to be geeky but I think having Dent locked up in secret and having Batman take the fall for what he did would have been cool... Then have Two-Face escape from the help of the league of shadows. He then basically do what Bane does here and start a fake revolution by force would have been cool and tied all three movies together. Only problem is Bane is a perfect villain here... In Batman Begins Batman defeats a mad scientist who could not fight(Screcrow) and the man who taught him to fight like a ninja(Ra's). In TDK he faces off with a fucking lunatic(Joker) who tested him on many levels but in a fight didn't really stand a chance. In the final "fight scene" he uses dogs as a distraction and needs Batman's echo shit to malfunction to get the upper hand.... Here Bane is a physical threat that we haven't seen Batman face before. If they used Two-Face they probably wouldn't have gotten the same effect. Sooo... Nolan was right in the end. Sorry for the rant.

I'm sure thousands, millions even will disagree in the end. Fancy basing yer assumptions on a trailer anyway, ya should know better by now. My confidence in this film is from the previous two, awesome movies!! Yeah, I'm not blind to the fact it won't do as big business as TDK (it would need a high profile death and Bale's rant never to have happened for that), but I reckon it will be a killer film none the less. Yes, I'm a little concerned about catwoman being in it, goes against me gut, but I'll wait till I've seen it and am sure I will be proven wrong on that.

    Classy Trailer!

    by donchild

Really impressed with that piece of marketing!, now there’s a trailer that can stand on it’s own two feet and doesn't pander to the usual slap dash, frenetic style of the typical blockbuster hard sell! A great deal is conveyed in the way of emotional weight & the general feeling of as Harvey Dent said “the night is darkest just before the dawn” with this. I really got the sense of a Gotham brought to its knees and in a state of despair with it’s saviour in a similar state. The use of music was absolutely spot on with its slow, melancholic start, then steadily building towards something epic & uplifting. I had read about the blowing up of the bridges recently but seeing how that shot is executed was way more powerful than doing the expected thing of going in close with the shot for the visceral thrills of destruction but instead showing the two bridges go down in the same shot from a distance, with that we see it through the eyes of the people of Gotham & get a feeling of the helplessness & despair that Bane has brought upon them! Not many directors would take this approach and even though it’s just a trailer and going on previous experience expectations can be built really high through effective trailers only to come crashing down with the final film. Who knows this may be no different but man that trailer makes me really believe that this film is going to deliver in a way that nobody expects! Just as TDK stood apart from Begins as a separate movie that didn’t feel beholden to regurgitate any of it’s elements so to I believe this movie will very stand on its own as something really terrific whilst bringing themes laid out in Begins & TDK to a conclusion Oh yeah and in terms of wow factor shots, that one of Batman atop the bridge from the back with his cape billowing in the wind is a thing of stark beauty that for me even tops that shot from TDK with Batman standing amidst the rubble of the building in which Rachel died!

  • Cameron's 3-D Titanic. Fuck this movie...

  • I guess irony goes over your head too. If you want a movie with no substance or character go watch Green Lantern again. The rest of us will enjoy DKR and quietly feel sorry for you.

Nolans films taught us one thing.

    by knowthyself

Comic fans want all their comic book movies to be less and less like the actual comics. Batman used to be a super hero now it's just crime drama where a guy in a bat suit runs around. I like what Nolans done but it's time to go back to the Burton hero Batman icon after this.

  • May 2, 2012 8:12 AM CST

    by TheBigFuckinLebowski

... Is that after this series of films, Christian "Douche" Bale slips into the darkness forever.

  • Meanwhile I have watched Batman Forever like four times since TDK came out. I pretty much tune out during the ferry scene every time. And everything Batman says for the last 15 minutes of the movie is embarassing.

  • May 2, 2012 9:24 AM CST

So now you all hate Nolan's Batfilms?

    by Jaster Mareel

AYE CARUMBA! You fucking people! I want the fantasy aspects back too so I'm fine with a reboot after TDKR, but this trilogy has been a very true version of Batman as portrayed in the comics. Nolan took the time to explain all elements of the character. He explains how and why he became Batman, why he doesn't use guns, why he dresses like a bat, why he wears a cape, etc. He has assigned clear motivations to everything everyone does in this world. Burton only grazed over this. He shows us why Joker takes over as head of the mafia, but not why he then decides to terrorize the city. He made Catwoman a fucking zombie for fuck's sake and Penguin a sewer mutant. So I like the Burton films, but they can't hold a candle to what Nolan did. And we really needed a grounded take on the character to cleanse the pallate from the wretched Batman & Robin. The time is right to now reboot it (no origin required) and get a more fantastical vibe so that it can mesh with a world with Superman and Hawkman and Wonder Woman and we can all get our JLA on!

If it was more detection-heavy then you'd get people booing their little eyes out that there wasn't enough character development/action and other stuff, you can only do so much in 2 hours, it's a no-win! Go watch Schumacher's if Nolan's version offends you so much, that should put things in perspective for ya!!

    by Jaster Mareel

The only thing that comes to mind is Batman solving Riddler's riddles.

  • ...same could be said of Begins where with the help of others he worked out they were gonna gas the city so it is touched upon, people gotta pick holes simple as that, I'd be a hypocrite if I said I didn't as well, I like to challenge a movies water-tightness, that's half the fun! And no, not anus tightness all you filthy AICN-ers!

  • Many Alfred comments are tops, as is Gordon's "I gotta get me one a those!" Alright, last one ain't hilarious but it's a nice touch to his personality I think, not heavy-handed and sign-posted! And how many scenes in movies lately are as cool as when scarecrow wigs out and sees BatMan as a big liquorice-foaming demon?!

    Awesomeness! One question...

    by Fish Tank

That trailer is the perfect yin to the Avengers' yang. The subtleties in that beautiful soundtrack... the slow swell of music to a crescendo... the conveyed hopelessness... so nice! Pure art of cinema. Chilling. One question - why is Catwoman in a mixed sex penitentiary? She's the one that does the flip in the orange suit. Nice touch to speak to her boldness and dexterity, just puzzling...

  • I can only assume that you're a) joking, b) trolling, c) an idiot, d) mentally retarded.

    by Chad

Batman is going to die in this film? I'm heavily getting that vibe--from the lines to the title to the fact that this version of Batman is over, and Nolan needs to top the last one and also have closure. My Spidey-sense is telling me there will be a self-sacrifice for the good of the many.

  • May 2, 2012 11:53 AM CST

    Batman

    by darren

I have always had some issues about Nolan's handling of Batman. I may be dino dnaing here and filling gaps with the comic-book lore but there was no way, in my mind, Batman would have let Ra's die on that train in 'Begins'. The lack of detective work in most big screen outings of Batman is also weird in it's absence. He's the worlds greatest detective and this has never been properly addressed in any of the movies so far. Touched on, yes, but not really highlighted. I found TDK to suffer from many of the first movies flaws. The sonar device was something Batman would never use. It felt like other talkbackers have opined, that it wasn't really a Batman movie I was watching but a grand crime saga. Hopefully TDKR will be something I can get on board with and enjoy more than I did the first two but the trailer doesn't fill me with hope. Just my thoughts on it.

  • Some really stupid ass motherfuckers here. Some people thought the trailer sucked. Cool, your opinion. Some people loved the trailer (myself included). Glad for the people that can enjoy it for what it is. Hells to the fuck yes! For the extremists ... just go die in a fire. Fuck your pathetic ass lives, you worthless simpleton twats.

  • Seriously, take a look in the mirror and try to realize what a fucking waste you are. Think about how useless it is to be so extreme on a fucking internet message board. Then change your either change your life or continue to wallow in the waist deep shit for the rest of your sorry ass existence.

  • Quite a few commenters are entertaining and informative with their posts, and can rationally discuss things and disagree without resorting to a nuclear option. Others, though, don't seem to be able to rationally handle the fact the someone might enjoy something that they have a dislike or hatred for, or vice versa. It's pathetic, and brings down the discussion overall. Case in point, havehope: *Come on guys, You are just kidding yourselves. Take off those Nolan shades and WATCH the trailer for what it is. It ain't thrilling or exciting. It's actually pretty bland. Perhaps...slightly boring? Even the reveal of The Bat...just seems.... * Fucking seriously? It's not possible for someone to have enjoyed that trailer? If they think they enjoyed it, they really didn't and are just kidding themselves. And there are comments from the other side in a similar vein. People need to get over themselves. This My Opinion Is The Only Right One attitude is becoming more and more pervasive these days.

    by Tothe3rdPower

.....because the more I watch it, the more this movie begins to take on an EPIC feel! I think The Batman takes down those bridges to trap Bane in Gotham! WOW! How fucking badass would that be?!?!?! The enemy wants to go rounds, so then trap him in the arena!!!!!!!

  • No, the only reason to take down the bridges is to trap the people of Gotham inside, and to prevent large numbers of outsiders (National Guard/Army) from getting in.

.....obviously the final act is BRUCE WAYNE AS BATMAN leading an army of police officers against Bane and his thugs culminating in a hand to hand brawl on those steps!!!!! That is completely evident by the trailer! The rest is all speculation!

  • May 2, 2012 1:20 PM CST

    Also.....

    by Tothe3rdPower

....when you look at the trailer as Bane approaches the stairs where The Batman is standing, you clearly tell it is Christian Bale's jawline completely eliminating any notion of JGL or The Batman ending up paralyzed!

  • May 2, 2012 1:24 PM CST

    It is possible.....

    by Tothe3rdPower

.....that Bane escapes and the final fight is in the Batcave! Sure, but that doesn't seem likely. That final brawl looks like Bane is surrounded with his masterplan falling apart and engages The Batman in one last fight! When you put all the trailers together, I actually think there is nothing cryptic. IN FACT, I think the trailers give away the setup for part of the last act. Of course, there is going to be some kind of twist ending or ultimate reveal!

....I also agree with you that it's sad how many people on this website can never be satisfied! Nolan's movies are comic book enough?!?!?! REALLY?!?!?! A fucking vigilante with obvious personality issues (clearly demonstrated by his use of that bizarre voice) who uses his wealth to subvert the law and attack evil!!!!! A fucking guy who dresses up like a fucking BAT! A guy who can capture criminals in Hong Kong, drive a damn tank, fall through parking garages destroying a van, takes out an ENTIRE SWAT team with gadgets on a belt, falls off buildings, fights off dogs, battles an unstoppable clown terrorist, can get beaten with a lead pipe, uses sonar technology, and spends seven years in ninja training with a mysterious organization that has been resetting human civilizations for thousands of years!!!!! Yeeeeah, that's reeeeeeally grounded in fucking reality!!!! Nothing "comic" book about that! And one last thing, Nolan's The Batman is the only version with "detective elements" put to a fucking movie screen! He investigated the Scarecrow! He investigated the Joker and the mafia! What more do you fuckers want? It's a fucking 2 hour movie! There is only so much you can address! There's The Batman some of you assholes want, like that schlock Burton and Schumacher put on the screen. Then, there is The Batman the majority of the film-going audience enjoys, but we are too fucking stupid to know better. After Nolan's films, I hope they continue to go bold and bring in Fincher or the Cohen brothers to reboot the franchise! Dark and gritty is the way to go! Fuck you and your headgeek! I hope you never get The Batman you want!!!!!!

  • I understand that we want high quality for these films. And I think we've been getting them. But One poster earlier comparing the realism of the Batman films to the Avengers his retarded. I mean seriously you're complaint is that The Pants stay on the HULK. And that Thor should be more powerful, a mythic figure should be more powerful than another fictional figure. LOL did you even read that before you posted it. When the film itself takes from a medium that suspends realism in general why hold it to that standard? In all reality Batman would never exist. A Bill Gates wealth type with supreme athlete skills and military training could try and do what Batman does & his ass would be caught locked up in an insane asylum. If not shot to death in reality. Get your head out of your ass and enjoy the spectacle people. It's not a competition we get a summer and year full of great freaking MOVIES.

....it could be a lot worse! I loved TDK and Batman Begins. They weren't perfect by any stretch. The hand to hand combat in BB was awful. TDK it was better. I could have done without that ferry scene! Taken as a whole, this series will end up representing the most consistent and greatest trilogy of all time. I am ready for a reboot though. I feel this is a self-contained arch and it is time to move on. Anything with Bale after TDKR would be overkill! You are not going to be able to outdue Ledger and now Bane using an army to attack the whole city!

the spiderman origin, along with superman and batman, is one of the greatest in comics. It's so basic, in a few panels you can retell it and you understand why he gives so much of himself. This parent backstory just doesn't interest me. It's too much like star wars. Peter was lucky to get bit by the spiderman, it was not meant to be like Luke was meant to become a jedi. I also don't like that Gwen knows his identity, I always thought it was great, one of the sacrifices he made, that Peter was in it alone. I suppose if it's a good yarn, and a great trilogy, I'll overlook all of this. Plus Garfield, unlike Bale, is perfect for this role.
