Hear ye, hear ye ... this is ...

HARVEST BOWL ANNOUCEMENT v1.02

THE DATE: OCTOBER 5, 1996
THE PLACE: RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE, ASHLAND, VA.

The Randolph-Macon Academic Team will be hosting Harvest Bowl '96
on the beautiful Randolph-Macon College campus in Ashland, Virginia,
conveniently located 15 miles north of Richmond, Virginia, just one
mile off of Interstate 95. Rounds will begin at 9:30 a.m.

At this point, I will set a (very tenative) team cap at 20 teams. If
enough teams are interested, and enough helpers can be had from the
Great Outside, then I can expand that. Then again, 20 teams may be
optimistic ... :)

WHO WE HAVE RIGHT NOW ...

University of Maryland - College Park: 2-3 teams
Loyola College: 1-2 teams
Johns Hopkins University: 2 teams
Bridgewater College: 1 team
University of Delaware: 1 team
Roanoke College: 1 team
Princeton University: 1 team
University of North Carolina: 1 team
North Carolina State University: 2 teams
Wake Forest University: 1 team
Hampden-Sydney College: 1 team

Add your name to this list! Register for Harvest Bowl '96 now!!!

Or if I've forgotten your team (and you have signed up, tell me now!!!)

WHAT MAKES HARVEST BOWL DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING ELSE?

Simple ... Dual rounds! The first half will consist of 12 ACF-style
questions, complete with appropriate difficulty and 30-point bonuses,
etc., etc.

The second half, the clocks turn on, and teams play for eight minutes
of Penn-Bowl style toss-ups and boni.

Warning: If there are not enough clocks or game volunteers, some
preliminary matches may have to be 12 Penn Bowl style questions (untimed).

Complete rules will soon be available at the R-MC College Bowl web
site: http://newt.rmc.edu/~spickrel/c-bowl.html ...

WHICH IS NOW ON-LINE!!!
(if newt.rmc.edu doesn't work, try MLND-5-8.rmc.edu)

BUT IS THAT ALL?

Nope! Teams participating will also get ...

FREE LUNCH! (this is definite)

FREE LODGING ON FRIDAY NIGHT! (on-campus, this is definite)
(we're going to try and get the gym, which has a shower, if we
can't, we can still give you the Campus Center, which doesn't have
a shower.)

... and a whole bunch of other corny prizes that our sick & twisted
minds can come up with. This will include T-shirts, stuffed animals,
etc., etc. But remember, this *is* Harvest Bowl '96. ;)

In addition, we write the questions, so you don't have to worry about
packet deadlines, question guidelines and the such. I will post exact
question breakdowns in future versions of this announcement.

To register: Simply send me an e-mail telling me (1) how many teams
you will be sending, (2) how many buzzer systems/clocks/game officials
you will be bringing and (3) a contact person for your school.

The fees:

BASE FEE: $100 ($90 for a second team, $80 for a third/fourth/fifth/etc.)

DISCOUNTS: (minimum fee $50 per team)
-$10 per working buzzer system
-$10 per working clock (one that is visible to both teams. Gra-Lab dark-
room timers are perfect for this!)
-$10 per working game official (i.e. he/she can read clearly, add/subtract
5's and 10's, and distinguish one player from another)
-$5 if you register before September 15
(too late now!)
-$5 if you're coming from over 250 miles out.

ADDITIONAL FEES:
+$10 to buy the questions (there will be at least 15 rounds)

Right now, we will probably play a round-robin or a nearly complete
round-robin. Each team will be guaranteed 15 games, after which
the top four teams will advance to the playoffs. We look to be finished
with the preliminary rounds by 6 pm or so, and be done with everything
by 7 pm.

This tournament will give schools a chance to "try out" their freshmen
with both ACF and CBI style questions, and will give veteran players the
chance to "try out" both formats and see how well they adjust to the
switch. We hope area schools will be able to make this tournament.

If you have any questions, or I left something out, please e-mail me at
spic...@newt.rmc.edu. I hope for a fun, fairly well-organized
tournament to test the dual rounds format.

Shawn Pickrell, Tournament Director (I will be delegating authority upon
our return to campus in late August.)
