The federal and provincial governments announced on Wednesday, March 27 that they are helping fund four road improvement projects in Strathcona County.

Funding for the projects includes $1.1 million from the federal Gas Tax fund and $2.1 million from Alberta’s Basic Municipal Transportation Grant.

Roads that will see minor concrete repair, fresh asphalt, painting and landscaping are 34 Street from Baseline Road to Sherwood Park Freeway, 17 Street from north of Baseline Road to Highway 16, Wye Road from east of Sherwood Drive to west of Ordze Road and Sherwood Drive from Village Drive to Ash Street.

The roads are a part of Strathcona County’s annual Arterial Road Rehabilitation program, which monitors roads that experience high traffic volumes.

Those four roads carry 87,000 vehicles a day according to Coun. Peter Wlodarczak, who spoke at a press conference where the funding was announced.

“This road work will support the growing needs of the county, making travel safer, easier and more efficient for families and residents,” said federal Public Works and Government Services Minister Rona Ambrose.

“The Alberta government is pleased to assist Strathcona County, through the Basic Municipal Transportation grant, in extending the life of important transportation infrastructure,” said Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver. “Our commitment to projects like these is part of our ongoing support for municipal priorities that benefit all Albertans.”

He added Strathcona County received $2.1 million for road maintenance last year as well.

“We are being prudent and responsible while building for the future,” McIver said. “Albertans will continue to see strategic rehabilitation projects on our roads and these four projects that we’re celebrating here today are perfect examples of work that will extend the life to these transportation assets.”

Construction on the four projects will begin in May and is expected to be completed by the end of September.
