Wedding Is Canceled for Suspect in Craigslist Murder

The attorney for Megan McAllister, the fiancée of Phillip Markoff, who has been charged of murdering a woman he met on Craigslist, said on Thursday that the pair’s Aug. 14 wedding plans are “being dismantled, because it is obvious the way the case is developing that the plans cannot go forward.”

Robert A. Honecker Jr., the attorney, accompanied Ms. McAllister on her first visit to her fiancé in prison on Wednesday. She had not seen him since his arrest last Monday. He has been charged with murder and armed robbery related to two incidents in Boston.

Ms. McAllister, of Little Silver, N.J, was also accompanied on her 25-minute visit to the Nashua Street Jail in Boston by her mother Lynn, according to Mr. Honecker.

“It was a private visit, just her and him and at the end Megan was very emotional,” Mr. Honecker said, adding that Ms. McAllister still supports her fiancée and “believes in the system that you are innocent until proven guilty.”

Asked if Ms. McAllister had changed her mind about Mr. Markoff after the visit, the attorney said no, but added that she had no immediate plans for a repeat visit. "I think this was a big step for her to realize the seriousness of the charges her fiancé faces, “ Mr. Honecker said. “And also that she has to get on and take care of herself and the rest of her life,” he added.

Ms. McAllister was with Mr. Markoff when he was arrested on April 20. The two medical school students were apparently on their way to the Foxwoods casino in Connecticut when they were stopped by Massachusetts police.

Preliminary ballistics tests have linked bullets that killed an aspiring model in Boston with a gun found in the home Mr. Markoff shared with Ms. McAllister in Quincy, Mass. He pleaded not guilty to murder charges on April 21.

When asked if her family shares her belief in Mr. Markoff, Mr. Honecker replied: “Her family and friends continue to support Megan, and she gets a great deal of her strength from that support.”

“The whole family is emotionally drained by this ordeal, and they are taking things day to day,” Mr. Honecker added. Despite some reports that Ms. McAllister was not wearing her engagement ring during her visit, she remains engaged, according to Mr. Honecker, who is a partner in the Ocean Township, N.J. firm of Ansell, Zaro, Grimm and Aaron.A law enforcement official in Rhode Island said last week that a fingerprint found at the hotel where an exotic dancer was held at gunpoint matched that of Mr. Markoff. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the match ensured that Mr. Markoff would be charged in the Rhode Island attack.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Phillip Markoff has been charged in Rhode Island.
