Miami Marlins claim left-hander Duane Below off waivers from Detroit Tigers

DETROIT -- The Miami Marlins claimed left-handed pitcher Duane Below off waivers from the Detroit Tigers and optioned him to Triple-A New Orleans.

The Tigers announced the move Thursday afternoon.

to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for right-handed reliever Jose Valverde, who was added to the active roster.

The 27-year-old Below was 1-2 with a 2.10 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP in four starts with Triple-A Toledo this season.

"He was pitching well down there," manager Jim Leyland said Wednesday. "I don't deal with that end of it, when it comes to adding or subtracting from the roster, but I know he was pitching very well down there."

Below entered spring training in 2012 as a candidate for the No. 5 spot in the the Tigers' rotation. He lost the role to Drew Smyly, but was named to the Opening Day roster and went 2-1 with a 3.88 ERA in 27 games.

He was 2-3 with a 4.06 ERA in 41 games in two seasons with Detroit.
