July 2008: This picture shows the early construction work for the new 2012 Olympic Stadium. Work to build the 80,000 capacity stadium began three months ahead of schedule on 22 May 2008.
August 2008: Work starts on the 200 concrete supports. They will support the seating units for the lower 25,000 permanent seats. A further 55,000 temporary seats will also be added.
September 2008: Work continues to install the huge pre-cast concrete terracing units. There are 12,000 units weighing up to 10 tonnes each.
October 2008: The sun sets on the Olympic Park. During October steel terracing supports, each weighing 35 tonnes, were lifted into place above the podium level to hold the 55,000 seats in the upper tiers.
November 2008: The site shows the shape of the Olympic Stadium bowl and the beginnings of the steel seating frame. Most of the services for catering, toilets, and retail stalls will be located in removable pods on a 360° ground level concourse.
December 2008: The total stadium island site covers an area of 40 acres. A number of archaeological finds from the Iron Age and Bronze Age through to World War II have been found on the Olympic Park site.
January 2009 marks the half way point between London winning the bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Opening Ceremony in 2012. The first 30m-long steel section of the roof compression truss was lifted into place.
February 2009: Heavy snow covers the Olympic Park. Over 45 contracting firms, including carpenters, bricklayers, roofers, plumbers, electricians and drivers, are involved in the stadium's construction.
March 2009: The white trusses can now be seen around the stadium bowl. A truss is a triangulated framework used for support in tension and compression.
April 2009: The first permanent footbridge is installed at the stadium site. It is the first of five new bridges for access to the stadium that is covered by water on three sides.
May 2009: May marks one year on since the construction on the stadium began. So far 12 of 28 steel roof sections have been lifted into place.
June 2009: The stadium is now a third of the way through the build. The final roof trusses are being put in place. The cable-supported roof will have a diameter of 92 feet (28m).
