Google Analytics supports Flash event tracking

Google Analytics, the newly-free web-page stats tracking service has a support page detailing how to track Flash events. No special magic required, the Javascript just needs to be embedded in the HTML page before making a getURL Javascript calls to the 'urchinTracker' function with an identifier for the event. The event id needs to start with a '/'.

This could be helpful for making Flash applications more usuable - Flash developers tend to have less of an idea of how users interact with their Flash applications than website developers - simply because tracking HTTP requests has always been very well supported, but the interaction that goes on within a Flash movie delivered to a user has usually stayed on the user's computer.

» Flash sites anyone? (in defense of Flash) from Bamtastic!
I love Flash sites! There I said it. Maybe the source of my bias is that I create websites and do a lot of animation in Flash prior to learning SEO and Internet Marketing. But allow me to qualify that. I hate Flash sites that animates for the sake of ... [Read More]

This works great if you don't mind button-clicks registering as pageviews. Haven't tried the service out yet, but what would be nice is a way of separating out pages and other custom events. That way you can find out what buttons are pressed on what pages, the total number of clicks of a certain button, how many people click button A on a page and click button B on the following page, etc.

And what would REALLY be nice is some non-js (i,e. webservice or xml socket based solution) to directly send usage statistics to the server. Keeping my eyes peeled...

I wanted to ask you this: does the 'navigation summary' report capture the transition from one page to another via a link within flash?

It has to be javascript because it has to be a client side request.

I am desperately trying to work this out to utlise it for flash banner click throughs with multiple landing pages.

The seperateion between each slide on the flash is sort of vital to this working.
