Editorial Reviews
For Man In The Air, Elling's sixth release for Blue Note Records, the 35-year-old Chicagoan has created original lyrics for compositions by such giants as saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Herbie Hancock, guitarist Pat Metheny and others close to his heart. Elling hopes that audiences will fall in love with music that he himself adores, or will rediscover some compositions they have loved and overlooked for a time.
Kurt Elling: Vocals
Laurence Hobgood: Piano & Rhodes Electric Piano
Rob Amster: Bass
Frank Parker, Jr.: Drums & Percussion
Stefon Harris: Vibes
Jim Gailloreto: Soprano Saxophone
with Paul Wertico (Drums on Track 1) and Brad Wheeler (Soprano Saxophone on Track 1)

- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2024I liked this cd very much.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2011While driving home late at night in the rain I heard one of the purest voices ever, it was Kurt Elling singing "Time To Say Goodbye," it stunned me and brought tears to my eyes. Andre Bocelli had a hit song with that same title about 10 years ago, that's the last time a song moved me so much. Ironic that the two times I was moved to tears by two different songs with entirely different artists have the same title. In "Time To Say Goodbye" Kurt takes his perfect pitch right to the edge, just wonderful. The music woven in like a complicated tapestry pure gold too.
I couldn't wait to get home and order it, am listening to it as I write. Sheer unadulterated pleasure.
Looking forward to listening and discovering more of his work.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2003While not of the highest rank, this is still an excellent CD that will absolutely please Ellings fans and will probably bring him new ones. This release is a little more contemporary and certainly more commercial in style that his last recording, the brilliant "Flirting With Twlight." As always with this artist, his collaboration with pianist Lawrence Hobgood is musical in every way and beautifull refined. Elling himself is in superb voice throughout, as good as he's sounded on record.
The opening track is a real knock-your-socks off surprise, a typical Metheny/Mays collaboration, complete with arpeggiated oepning chords and a vaguely latin beat, given a powerful, thrilling rendition by Elling, with his own superb lyrics. This is the CD at it's best in the commercial sense, a more popular song performed to the utmost. The same holds for his version of "Never My Love," again, lovely in voice and effectively and intriguingly reharmonized. He gets into a pleasantly funky groove on "In the Winelight," but here the lyrics are okay, not to the standard one grows used to with Elling. This is also true of his lyrics to Zawinul's 'A Remark You Made,' here done as "Time To Say Goodbye." This is simply gorgeous, rich music, and the lyric, while capable, doesn't meet the wonderful tune in the same place. But these are minor disappointments, compared with the above mentioned pleasant surprises and the thrill of hearing him sing vocalese to Coltrane's "Resolution," although the real high-point of the recording could be his vocalese to a Bobby Watson piece, "Hidden Jewel," which is a superb performance remeniscent of his "She's Funny That Way." Dig in.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2017Absolutely love this man's style and singing. He is one of the great jazz singers of modern times. I doubt there is anything he cannot put his interpretation on and make enjoyable to listen to. Waiting for his next CD.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2013his voice is a little off,, which makes it like a crying sax more than a smooth crooner... but somehow that makes this so easy to listen to. The guy is great in concert if you have the chance.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2010It's funny. I like Kurt's singing. And the band is wonderful. But unlike the amazing lyricists of the past. These lyrics are forced into a melodic structure without much finesse. It reminds me of forced humor. You know, the guys on morning radio being forced to attempt to be funny every day. With the result being NOT FUNNY! This feels the same to me. A little presumptous to assume any of these composers of these great tunes ever wanted or imagined them vocalized by anyone. I remember Mark Murphy pulling it off 30 years ago pretty well. But this just doesn't make it. And the banana song is mind boggling. Guess I'll have to stick to Kurt doing standards.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2012one of the best spiritual albums I've every heard, and it's GREAT JAZZ! Kurt Elling is one of the best singer/songwriter/performer I've heard in a long, long time! Great Scat singing!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2015This CD is simply fantastic. I love all aspects of it. You will not be sorry in buying this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inventive & rich
This album is definitely not background music. His work is full of musical and emotional richness. Kurt Elling is a fully rounded human being!

2.0 out of 5 stars Strictly for the jazz purist
This is an uber-cool jazz cd. It is almost poetry being sung to jazz renditions. Its not my kind of music but those that like jazz that is slightly discordant to the untrained ear, then this is exactly right for you. Im a pleb who enjoys to-tapping music and this album isn't to my taste. Kurt Elling has a superb voice though and some of the solos from the instrumentalists are terrific.
