Report: Chargers Reach An Agreement With CB Derek Cox

Update:

Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune San Diego reports that the Chargers have reached an agreement with free agent with CB Derek Cox on a three-year deal.

  • Mike Garafolo reports that the deal is actually a four-year deal agreement.
  • Sean Jenson reports that Cox receives $20 million and $10.25 million guaranteed.

The Chargers were targeting Cox and Jerraud Powers, but he wound up signing with the Cardinals earlier today. This looks like a good move by San Diego, as they get one of their targets before the cornerback market starts to heat up.

We had Cox listed as the No. 42 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.

Update:

Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune San Diego reports that a league source has informed him that the Chargers have expressed interest in free agent CB Derek Cox.

Gehlken mentions that Jerraud Powers could be another option for them.

San Diego isn’t expected to be involved with some of the higher priced cornerbacks in this year’s market. Gehlken adds that Antoine Cason and Quentin Jammer are unlikely to be back.

The Buccaneers, Patriots, Jaguars and Redskins have reportedly all shown some amount of interest in Cox to this point.

Update:

Ryan O’Halloran reports that the Jaguars have reached out to free agent CB Derek Cox in the past 24 hours.

Jacksonville appears to be approaching the offseason with caution, but they’ll have to find some help at cornerback and Cox could end up being a reasonable value.

Update:

Roy Cummings reports that the Buccaneers are “continuing their pursuit” of free agent CB Derek Cox and could have him signed “out of the chute” on Tuesday.

Clearly, Tampa Bay is planning on aggressively pursuing some much needed upgrades at the cornerback position. Cox reportedly has a decent enough market that it may not be that easy for them to sign him right away, but it’s still a possibility.

—————-

John Keim of the Washington Examiner tweets that  free agent CB Derek Cox is one “name to keep an eye on” for the Redskins next week.

Cox, 26, was clearly the Jaguars’ best cornerback last season, and at times played pretty well.

Washington needs to find upgrades for their secondary, so it’s not hard to see why they could have interest in Cox. The issue will obviously be related to his asking price and how that works with the Redskins limited cap space.

There have been rumors that Washington could release CB DeAngelo Hall if he’s unwilling to take a pay cut. The Jaguars also released CB Aaron Ross earlier today, and it’s worth noting that the Redskins showed interest in him last season.
