World's Largest Producers of Fruits II

Do you like banana? How about pineapple or grapefruit? Find out the largest producers of your favorite fruits.

This is a sequel to my article "World's Largest Producer of Fruits. Here are 12 more popular, mouthwatering and delicious fruits from around the world.

1.) Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) – USA

The leading producer of Grapefruit is the USA with an estimated annual production of 1.5 million tons followed by Peoples republic of China and South Africa. This highly recommended fruit for diabetes sufferers and dieters was first bred in Jamaica.

2.) Mango (Mangifera indica) – India

The sweetest Mango cultivar can be found in the Philippines but the largest producer of mango is India where it is endemic. The 2nd and 3rd largest producers of mango in the world are China and Mexico, respectively. This delicious and nutritious fruit is grown widely in tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Lemons are native to Asia and the leading producers are India with an estimated annual production of 2.06 million tons followed by Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. India leads the world’s overall lemon and lime output (16%).

4.) Plantain (Musa x paradisiaca) – Uganda

Plantain is a cultivar of banana which is primarily used in cooking. It can be eaten raw but unlike other cultivars, it can be boiled, fried, sweetened and many others. Banana chips are also made of Plantain. The leading producer of Plantain is Uganda followed by Colombia.

5.) Banana (Musa) – India

Bananas leading producer is India with an estimated annual production of 21.8 million tons followed by China with 8 million tons and the Philippines with 7.5 million tons. Banana, which is native to Southeast Asia, is known as the complete food.

6.) Nutmeg (Myristica) – Indonesia

The world has an estimated annual production between 10,000 to 12,000 tons of Nutmeg and Indonesia contributes the largest percentage of the overall production followed by Grenada, India and Malaysia. Nutmeg is the only tropical fruit that is the source of two different spices.

7.) Pineapple (Ananas comosus) – Thailand

Pineapple is a topical fruit that is native to Paraguay and Brazil but the top producer of this delicious and vitamin C fruit is Southeast Asia, Thailand in particular with 1.9 million tons estimated annual production followed by the Philippines with 1.6 million tons and Brazil with 1.4 million tons. The leading exporters of fresh Pineapples are Costa Rica, Cote d’Ivoire and the Philippines.

8.) Kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) - Italy

Kiwifruit fruit, which is more commonly known as Kiwi, is endemic to China but the top producer of this fruit is Italy followed by New Zealand. This fruit is rich in potassium and phosphorous which is why it’s becoming a popular commercial crop in several countries like in Italy, China, and New Zealand.

9.) Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) – China

Tomatoes are among the most largely consumed fruits in the world and the leading producer is China with 33.8 million ton estimated annual production followed by the USA with 12.5 million tons and Turkey with 10.9 million tons.

10.) Almond (Prunus dulcis) – USA

The overall worldwide production of Almont is about 1.7 million tons annually. The major producer of this potassium and carbohydrate rich fruit is the United States followed by Spain and Syria. This fruit, which is highly recommended for diabetes mellitus sufferers, is native to the Middle East.

11.) Raspberry (Rubus) – Russia

The world’s largest producer of Raspberry is Russia. It has an estimated annual production of 95 thousand tons followed by Serbia and the United States with 79 thousand and 48 thousand tons, respectively.

12.) Strawberry (Fragaria) – Egypt

Aside from Dates, Egypt is also the leading producer of Strawberry with an estimated annual production of 100 thousand tons followed by Germany and Italy. It is widely eaten raw but also largely consumed in prepared foods such as fruit juice, ice creams, milk shake pies and preserves.
