THE CRAFT of WRITING: INJECTING HUMOR into YOUR STORIES

Injections of humor benefit so many forms of writing. Humor can reveal unique aspects of your characters; witty asides add sparkle to dialog. Deft comic relief gives your reader a break in the dramatic tension; the contrast heightens the emotional impact of your story.

Some will insist that being humorous cannot be taught. Author and writing instructor Kris Neri maintains that humor writing involves techniques that can be practiced and honed, like any other aspect of the craft.
She will explain how humor functions within stories, share effective humor-writing tools, and deconstruct real examples to reveal why a particular passage is funny.

Ms. Neri will explore general guidelines for using humor in your work to reveal your characters' unique traits. She will discuss how to deal with taboos and sensitive subjects with a light touch, seeing the humor in sacred cows without losing readers.

Kris Neri writes the humorous Samanta Brennan & Annabelle Haggerty magical series; she also write the Tracy Eaton mysteries and other women's fiction and thrillers. Her novels have been nominated for the Agatha, Anthony, Macavity, Internal Book Award, Lefty and the New Mexico-Arizona Book Award. She is a four-time winner of the NM-AZ Book Award. She teaches in the Writers' Program of the UCLA Extension School and the Sisters in Crime Guppy School. She and her husband now live in Silver City, New Mexico.
