The future of under-threat Boulton Paul Heritage Centre looks to have been secured after it emerged that RAF Cosford had put in a bid to house all of its exhibits.

South Staffordshire Conservative MP Gavin Williamson revealed today that an end to the long running saga was in sight, with RAF Cosford stepping forward.

The heritage centre is home to the city's priceless collection of exhibits detailing its aviation history – but is being forced out of its current base at Moog Aviation in Wobaston Road, Fordhouses.

Moog is relocating to the £67 million i54 business park and the land owner, General Electric, wants the museum to move at the same time.

But Mr Williamson said today: "We have been in negotiations with different parties for quite a while now and RAF Cosford have made an offer. It now just needs to be agreed with the trustees there. They have said they could provide a home for the exhibits."

Mr Williamson said a meeting was being held next month at RAF Cosford to discuss the possible move in more detail.

The heritage centre is run by the Boulton Paul Association, which holds regular open days, attracting hundreds of people to the factory. The centre has 20,000 sq ft of space packed with old aircraft, aircraft models including the Defiant Bomber Destroyer and machinery.

Mr Williamson added: "The guys down there do some fantastic work. There is no higher commendation than to have RAF Cosford interested.

"It will be fantastic to save this gem for future generations."

Last week the Boulton Paul Association became only the second heritage group in the country to pick up the Queen's Awards for Voluntary Service.
