The End of the Game. The Old Africa and the New. Photographs and Text by Peter H. Beard. Viking Press, New York, 1965. 256 pp. First edition. Large quarto (11 1/2"/29 cm) . Cloth in photo-illustrated dust jacket.

Included in Roth, The Book of 101 Books, where David Levi-Strauss calls it, "an epic visual poem on hte subject of loss, especially the ultimate loss of life."

A widely acclaimed book that, much like Rachael Carson's Silent Spring (1962), contributed to a nascent understanding of the importance of environmental degradation. Whereas Carson focused on the dangers of pesticides, Beard focuses on the drastic transformations taking place on the African continent. He made four extended trips to Kenya and Tanganyika, eventually buying land at the foot of the Ngong Hills that he called "Hog Ranch". His photographs of the land, people, and wildlife present a moving, intimate, and informed artistic document. Illustrated with full-page gravure photographs, smaller halftone images, and a few full-page color photographs; the photographs are accompanied by old engravings, nature drawings, and woodcuts by Beard.
