The White House has yet to say whether the National Rifle Association will be included in Vice President Joseph R. Biden’s new task force for curbing gun violence in the nation.
“Well, the president’s not issuing invitations,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters Thursday. “The vice president is overseeing this effort, with Cabinet secretaries and others … I’m not aware of any conversations that have taken place with members or representatives of the NRA.”
SEE RELATED:Mr. Carney went on to repeat Mr. Obama’s comments this week about the NRA – that the organization is made up of members “who are mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters.”
“Everyone in America has a stake in dong something to end the scourge of gun violence in our country that, as we saw in Newtown, Conn. Is a threat to the most vulnerable citizens, the most vulnerable Americans – the children whose it should be our first duty to protect,” he continued.
The NRA is holding a news conference Friday and earlier this week promised “meaningful contributions” to make sure such mass killings don’t happen again.
