Site Description

Sunnydell Dryke Shooting Range is an active business located at 292 Dryke Road in Sequim.

In 2004, Clallam County Department of Health & Human Services sampled water and sediment from two ponds on the property after receiving a complaint about water coming onto a neighbor’s property. Samples had high levels of lead, which is a common contaminant at shooting ranges.

In 2009, Ecology and the owners entered into an agreed order (legal agreement) to investigate contamination and evaluate cleanup options. Sampling has found that the site is contaminated with:

Current Status

In March - May 2017, Ecology held a public comment period on the removal of the site from the state Hazardous Sites List, a statewide record of contaminated properties. This delisting will be final in 2017.

Since some contamination remains on site, the property owner is responsible for regular monitoring and allowing periodic reviews of site conditions every five years. An environmental covenant has been filed with Clallam County as well, restricting land use on the site to prevent accidental releases of contamination.

Cleanup and Management
Because this is an active shooting range, more lead shot will re-accumulate after any cleanup. The cleanup plan divided the site into management areas to reduce the spread and buildup of lead shot and targets, and to manage recontamination issues. In addition, over 20 cubic yards of contaminated sediment was removed from the lower pond. Click the link below to read the final report describing all management and cleanup activities that occurred at the Sunnydell Dryke site.

Next Steps

  1. The site will be removed from the state Hazardous Sites List.
  2. The owners recorded an environmental covenant on the property. It will alert future owners of the site’s use as a shooting range and of possible contamination.
  3. We will review the site status every five years to make sure that management actions are protecting human health and the environment. To receive notice of these reviews, contact Megan MacClellan at the contact information listed to the right.
  4. The owners will need to do more cleanup in the future if the site is no longer used as a shooting range.

Site use restrictions called institutional controls are in effect

Institutional controls can be fences, signs, or restrictions on how the property is used. For instance, an institutional control may prohibit installing drinking water wells or disturbing a protective cap that isolates contamination. These restrictions keep the contamination contained and keep people from being exposed to the contamination. The controls are usually listed in environmental covenants recorded with the county.

Periodic reviews are required when institutional controls are required at a site. Ecology conducts reviews to make sure the controls remain effective and the cleanup still protects human health and the environment. We conduct periodic reviews about every five years.
