Why this petition matters

Started by Kimberly Karitis

Community, it is a term that many of us who live in the Town of Newburgh define as a place of shared location, government and common interests for the safety and security of our families, friends and homes.
The board has a clear path to protecting our Town now and for future generations by implementing the Adult Use Zone. An Adult Use Zone is part of the master plan approved in 2006 and the time is now to implement that part of the plan. We call upon the Town Board to immediately issue a moratorium on all permits, approvals and building for new and existing adult use businesses. A moratorium will give them the necessary time to implement an Adult Use Zone properly.
We acknowledge that Adult Use businesses have the right to operate within the law and we are not challenging that right we just want a zone created that restricts such adult uses to areas of the Town that make sense. Existing adult uses inconsistent with this approach should be phased out over time and redirected to these more appropriate areas of the Town.
Adult Use businesses should not be near places of worship, residential areas, daycare centers and schools. There have been many studies on the negative secondary effects related to Adult Use businesses. The Town Board needs to zone our town properly to protect our families and investment in the Town of Newburgh from the harmful negative secondary effects.
We the undersigned concerned residents, call upon our elected officials in Town Hall to enact a moratorium on all permits, approvals and building for new and existing Adult Use businesses, so they can implement an Adult Use Zone. A proper zone for adult use businesses must be established that makes sense now and for the future of the Town of Newburgh, thus advocating for the quality of life and safety of its residents.
We have signed our names on the dates indicated next to our signatures.
