Library Staff Highlights
Mandi Goodsett, Performing Arts & Humanities Librarian and OER & Copyright Advisor, was recently selected as the 2022 Lois Ann Gregory-Wood Fellow by the American Library Association. She also published an article titled Fostering Critical Thinking in First-Year Students through Information Literacy Instruction in College & Research Libraries after over 3 years of research, peer review, and waiting!

CSU Libraries Learning Exchange (CLLE)

During the January intersession, the Michael Schwartz Library and the Law Library teamed up to put on a virtual internal conference, sharing ideas and connecting with each other. There were six pre-recorded sessions and three live sessions, plus three lightning talks. Topics ranged from stress management, to file-naming best practices, to diversity in the workplace. We also enjoyed a rousing social session that had everyone laughing and sharing. The attendees had overwhelmingly positive feedback, and the day was a fun opportunity for connection!

ASSIST
ASSISTing International Students

The Library has formed the Assistance, Support, and Success for International Students Team (ASSIST) to help International Students succeed. The team is focused on providing resources and services to international students to help ease their transition to CSU and support their academic success. In addition to participating in the Center for International Services and Programs (CISP) international student orientation and resource fair, below are some of the services and resources that are available.

Digital CSU Student Showcase

This fall semester, Digital CSU, in cooperation with the Michael Schwartz Library, coordinated both an in-person and virtual Digital Student Showcase. The Digital Student Showcase is an opportunity for students to present their digital projects to peers and the rest of the campus community.

Black History month
Library Exhibits
MLK and Black History Month
Join the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month by visiting two special exhibits at the library. The exhibits will not only highlight Martin Luther King, Jr. in Cleveland and honor his achievements as an American civil rights leader but will also focus on the broader theme of Black History month. This features a Cleveland Memory Project exhibit titled Black Trailblazers, Leaders, Activists and Intellectuals in Cleveland and includes a display of books from the Anisfield-Wolf Award-Winning Books at Michael Schwartz Library. Visit the displays through February 2022. 

Be Kind to Yourself!
Your health and well-being are important. The MS Library also has a feature display with a variety of materials aimed to support your wellness interests. Come check out a book, see the latest information about campus resources such as the self-care room, or grab a mindfulness calendar. Visit the display through the spring semester.

Beginning in March, the Library will offer an exhibit in observance of Women's History Month and International Women's Day.

Academic Writing Club
Academic Writing Club for CSU Grad Students and Faculty

Could you use some structured time to write and receive feedback from colleagues? Do you wish you could graduate with some published academic writing under your belt? Do you have some academic writing that needs polishing to become publishable? If so, this writing club is for you!

Meetings will occur in Zoom from 3 - 4pm on Wednesdays
beginning January 26 and ending May 4.


Filling out the sign up form does not obligate you to participate or attend every meeting.
The Library Diversity Council Takes Shape

The goal of the Library’s newly formed Diversity Council is to examine library practices through the lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism and to institute changes that will promote equity and inclusivity. The Library Diversity Council began its work in late spring 2021. As its first task, the Council formed a team to support the library’s participation in the OhioLINK Luminaries Program.  This program provides a paid, resume-building work experience in the information studies profession, creates a support network for participants, and encourages students from diverse backgrounds to consider pursuing a career in librarianship or Information Sciences. Next, the members took a broader look at the activities of the library to identify where change was needed.

New Learning Commons Computers

Over the winter break, 55 brand new, state-of-the-art computers were installed in the Library's 1st floor Learning Commons for CSU student, faculty, and staff use. The new computers feature faster login times and double the memory (RAM) of the old computers that were replaced.

Need an essential item? Try our vending machine! It's got everything from school supplies to hygiene products to ear buds and more.
Podcast
New Podcast Studio

The Michael Schwartz Library is happy to announce the new Podcast Studio. Free to be used by CSU students and made possible in collaboration with the Center for Instructional Technology and Distance Learning, the Podcast Studio features a 4 microphone setup with recording equipment and software. With the option to record in Adobe Audition (also available on Digital Design Studio computers) or in the free Audacity software, students can create and edit podcasts, interviews, and voiceovers. 
 
Students may reserve the room for two-hour blocks of time by visiting the Digital Design Studio or calling 216-687-9337. Users must provide their contact information and student ID at the time of reservation, and check out the key for the room at the time of use with their Viking Card.
 
*The Podcast Studio will be open to CSU faculty and staff as well, but preference will be given to students.
Coming Soon! Comics and Graphic Novels Collection

Early in the spring semester, the Library will be creating a new comics and graphic novel collection located near the atrium on the fourth floor. The comics and graphic novel collection will include materials previously held in the Library, but scattered over the entire building, and entirely new content selected by our OhioLINK Luminaries program resident, Thyra Chaney.

These materials have been selected with an eye toward pulling diverse perspectives into the Library and collection while also bringing fun, new content for students to enjoy. Find titles like Persepolis, Watchmen, The Wicked + The Divine, Black Panther & Crew, and more!

The Library will also be hosting a virtual book and graphic novel discussion group for students to engage in important conversations around social justice and social change centered around a particular work. This semester’s selection is Bingo Love written by Tee Franklin and with art by Joy San and Jenn St-Onge.

Watch for signage and a sample of the collection on the first floor for the collection’s and discussion group’s official launch.
Continuing to Keep Patrons Safe with Contactless Pickup

The Library is extending the contactless service for library material pickup through the spring 2022 semester. Students, faculty, and staff have the choice to pick up library materials at the User Services desk or through the contactless method. 

For those who prefer the contactless option, the service may be requested by calling User Services desk at (216) 687-2479 during Library operational hours, or by emailing [email protected]. Materials for contactless pickup will be placed on the hold shelf within the lobby of Rhodes Tower, sorted alphabetically and labeled with the patron's name. Patrons will receive an email when their order is ready and have ten business days to collect their requested items.

Cambridge University Press "Read & Publish" Agreement

As a member of OhioLINK and a participating member of OhioLINK’s Electronic Journal Center, Cleveland State University has entered into a 3-year Read & Publish agreement with Cambridge University Press starting on January 1st.

This cost neutral agreement includes access to all current Cambridge University Press journal content and will allow corresponding authors from OhioLINK institutions to publish unlimited open access journal articles in Cambridge journals without paying any additional fees (i.e. article processing charges).

Affordable Learning at CSU
Announcing our Spring 2022 Textbook Affordability Small Grants
Textbook Affordability Grants are offered through the Michael Schwartz Library to encourage and support the creation or compilation of low-cost or no-cost course materials. Faculty whose projects are selected will receive a $1,000 grant. Appropriate support to create or compile an open educational textbook or other educational resources to replace a traditional, high-cost textbook will be provided by the Michael Schwartz Library, the Center for eLearning, the Center for Instructional Technology and Distance Learning, and the Center for Faculty Excellence. Five awards are available.

The deadline to complete the Intent to Submit Form is April 8th

OpenCon Cleveland 2022 -- Save the Date!
OpenCon Cleveland 2022 will be held virtually on Friday, May 20, 2022. OpenCon Cleveland is an annual event which celebrates the benefits of open education to student learning. Announcement from the Cleveland Memory Project
In our first official observation of Cleveland Memory's 20th Anniversary, and in recognition of the Martin Luther King holiday and Black History Month in February, we're happy to launch a major reworking of one of the first-ever exhibits on Cleveland Memory. "Notable Blacks of Cleveland" has become Black Trailblazers, Leaders, Activists, and Intellectuals in Cleveland. Far beyond the original collection of images, the new site is a pathfinder to our extensive collections focusing on Black Clevelanders and Black Cleveland history.

Understanding Literacy
New Open Educational Resources
Dr. Julie Townsend’s new book Understanding Literacy in Our Lives: First-Year Writing Perspective, has recently been published by MSL Academic Endeavors in EngagedScholarship @ Cleveland State University. This collection of texts aims at making writing studies and New Literacy Studies accessible and relevant to first-year writers across all disciplines.

Marcus Schultz-Bergin, Department of Philosophy and Comparative Religion, has also recently published his book The Primacy of the Public: Ethical Design for Technology. This open educational resource will be used by his Engineering Ethics classes at CSU and is also freely available to educators worldwide.
