LONGMONT — Longmont police on Monday afternoon investigated the death of a 6-year-old girl they say might have been due to illness.

Cmdr. Tim Lewis said the Boulder County Coroner’s Office contacted police at about 9 a.m. to notify them of the death of the girl, identified later as Lluvia Espinoza Morales.

The girl’s family had taken her to Longmont United Hospital, where she was pronounced dead Monday morning, Lewis said.

Because the girl was not under the care of a doctor at the time of her death, police were assisting the coroner’s investigation to determine the cause and manner of death, Lewis said. The investigation is pending, but Lewis said there did not appear to be anything suspicious about the girl’s death and that there was no danger to the public.

Investigators donned hazardous materials gear before entering the apartment where the girl lived at 706 Darby Court, and officers closed off the street at Longs Peak Avenue. A carbon monoxide test in the home was negative, Lewis said.

“The child may have been ill,” Lewis said. “We are taking universal precautions.”

Lewis said three other children in the home were examined and are OK. The unit does not share a ventilation system with other units.
