Why this petition matters

Started by Harnidh Kaur

On 9 October, 2012, 15-year old Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in response to her campaign against the destruction of girls’ schools in Pakistan. This is because in the face of terror, Malala had risked her life to claim the right to education of girls worldwide.

As a 18 year old girl, I feel inspired to see a young girl like Malala fight for the Right to Education, gender equality and universal human rights . Her courage, tenacity, and grace under pressure makes me believe that she should be nominated for, and should win the Nobel Peace Prize next year.

The first step in the process is to get Malala nominated for the Nobel Peace prize. Only certain people, like a national politician, or professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology can do this. That’s why I am petitioning Mr. Salman Kursheed, Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs;  Mr. Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, and various professors from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Delhi University, to nominate Malala for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Malala’s struggle represents that of every child, and every human being, who demands and should be provided with basic rights such as education. One child’s struggle has become the world’s rallying cry. Her fight is ours too.  Malala doesn’t just represent one young woman; she speaks out for all those who are denied an education purely on the basis of their gender.  It affects every one of us. I am Malala. You are too.

A Nobel Peace Prize for Malala will send a clear message that the world is watching and will support those who stand up for gender equality and universal human rights, including the right to education for girls. Your one signature could be the reason that human rights, child rights, and education rights will be viewed in a new light by all powerful international organizations.

There are ‘Malalas’ all over the globe, fighting and risking their lives everyday, to make sure that people around the world get the justice and rights that they were denied. It’s time to support them, to recognise them. This petition originates in India, Pakistan’s neighbor. It proves that the quest for justice and recognition of valor transcends boundaries and nationalities. Prove that you stand for equality, for humanity. Sign this petition.

The counter on this petition reflects the cumulative efforts of these petitions from around the world.

If you don’t have a petition in your country yet and you would like to start one, send Tarek a note at Nobel4Malala@gmail.com with your country in the subject line.
