Biography

  • Palma Violets are an English band from Lambeth, London formed in 2011 and currently consist of Samuel Thomas Fryer, Alexander "Chilli" Jesson, Jeffrey Peter Mayhew and William Martin Doyle.

The name of the band began to appear on numerous blogs and lists in 2012 as ones to watch for the following year after a number of early tours and releases surfaced and the band found themselves with a loyal fan base before the release of a substantial album. NME has also been huge supporters of the band from the offset, naming 'Best Of Friends' their Best Track of 2012. The BBC echoed these sentiments when they announced that the band had been included on the list of artists nominated as the Sound Of 2013.

They released their debut album '180' in February 2013 through Rough Trade which has supported The Libertines, The Smiths and The Strokes. The album was met well by critics and holds a Metacritic score of 74/100 indicating generally favourable reviews.

The album earned the band a number of nominations that year from esteemed publications. They were nominated for Best New Act at the Q Awards and won Best New Band at the NME awards. In 2014 they were nominated for the same award by NME, along with Best Live Band following a summer of appearances at the likes of Reading & Leeds, Y Not Festival and Bilbao.

Live reviews

  • Palma Violets

You can’t go to a Palma Violets gig and not expect the crowd to go mental. I went to see Palma Violets perform on one of the smaller stages at Hyde Park supporting headliners the Rolling Stones. Everyone was there purely to see the stones so considering Palma Violets hadn't realised an album yet it’s surprising how big of a crowd they drew. Everyone there was having a good time, enjoying themselves even if they didn’t know the songs. There’s something about the stage presence of singer and bass player Chilli Jesson that makes everyone there have as much of an exciting time as the indie four-piece are on stage. Half way through the set, Palma Violets played one of their singles ‘Best of Friends’ which had everyone dancing along to and by the end of the song everyone had caught onto the chorus. Towards the end of the set, the small theatre was packed full of eager faces wondering what the excitement was all about. As it was the height of summer, the theatre was boiling and the band had managed to get everyone dancing along to their songs so in an attempt to cool the shirtless men and sweating audience, front men Sam Fryar and Chilli Jesson emptied out bottles of water onto the crowd. With just one album ‘180’ produced on legendary indie record label Rough Trade, Palma Violets never leave their audience expecting more. Their enigmatic sets are always enough to leave the crowd in bliss.

  • Indie darlings Palma Violets have enjoyed great support from British heavyweights including NME and BBC from the offset of the career. The former awarding them best track of 2012 despite having not yet released an album and later nominated them for best live band.

You get the sense that the Lambeth quintet would have found a way to make it onto the large with no support at all as they are simply so passionate for their music. They play the small venues as if they were stadiums, throwing themselves into instrumentals from the offset and launching themselves around the stage. There is no track that is simply introduced, played and then applauded and this is what makes Palma Violets a truly exciting outfit. The crowds show an equal enthusiasm and it is due to this support that the band is able to play both its studio albums in almost total entirety without the pace ever dropping. They close on a newer song 'Danger In The Club' which is perhaps the most anthemic and promising performance so far.

  • INSANE!!!!! Best concert I have been to, seriously. I was actually there to see one of the support groups, The Wytches, and they were just as hypnotic and beautifully murderous as ever. After they played I was surprised by the other groups Slaves and Fat White Family, both awesome and the crowd went mental!!!

Of course, Palma Violets were just insane. Their music, just everything. We had the best time dancing along and I would recommend seeing them in concert as soon as you can, without any doubt. Can't wait to see them live again!
