Hi Gang

Decided i'd have a crack at a 52 this year, get me out and shooting more. Due to uni exams i have had to start a month later than everyone else

I have set myself a few rules for this challenge, to make it just that, a challenge...
1) No heavy post processing, I have to get it right in camera.
2) Has to be shot on film, 35mm, 120 or whatever i can lay my hands on
3) I have to develop all black and white negatives, colour can be sent off
4) Prime lenses only
5) Even if a roll is shafted in exposure or development, i have to upload a photo

Here goes nothing...

1) Fomapan 100, shot as 400, devved in Rodinal

Long Walk Home by Rob Hooley, on Flickr

Took this on the way home from the pub, bus driver decided he didnt want to follow the rest of the route so left me with a nice walk home in gale force winds, after a couple too many... Handheld, somehow...

Liking your intro shot into your 52 Rob.....Simple but effective.(y)
Handheld, a little drunk, gale winds and still sharp .......I need to start drinking again:D

Thanks Asha :) Really have no idea how it was sharp as i was more than a little drunk :p I was expecting the whole thing to be a massive blur with no resemblance to the actual scene :D

Good start, Rob. Looking forward to seeing more. Are you thinking of finishing this time next year or cramming your 52 shots into 48 weeks?

I'll probably finish this time next year, depends what my uni exams are like next january :D

I'm not doing the TP 52 themes, don't really have the time to make my images fit them, so i may be able to cram them into 48 weeks if i have a sudden flash of inspiration :)

Bump

Week 2 - Self Portrait

Might as well get it out of the way, shot to finish off a roll of 120.

Absolutely ruined the exposure by accidentally underexposing by about 4 stops then pulling back in lightroom. Hence the sandpaper like grain

Week 3 - Spiralling

One of my favourite places to photograph in Manchester, Castlefield basin

Shot on Fomapan 100 and developed in Rodinal 1+25

Week 4 - Renewal

Green Quarter, Manchester

Really not happy with how this turned out, underexposed the negative so the dark areas lost all of the detail. Lost the pattern of the bridge and the homeless gentleman sitting in the corner on the right

Love the self portrait. the grain dust etc is irrelevant to me as I find the expression quite amusing ...it's as if your looking at the camera saying" now is this really going to work"!:D

The basin is pretty cool.(y)..I had a similar idea with our spiral staircase several days back when I wanted to finish the film in a 6x6....sadly the shot didn't come out as I wanted.

Shame about week 4 ....Had many shots like that when the part you want the detail doesn't come out and everything else does!:(

Cheers Asha :) i was concentratng very hard on pushing the shutter release without knocking the tripod and thinking that :D

The last one was a disappointment, ruined a whole other roll of film with a similar cockup :( Had my lightmeter set to compensate for the wrong size spot :(

Aww never mind .....there's always another day to capture it ....may take several visits to catch the homeless guy under the bridge again though:(

Not nice when you find you've ruined film through often silly mistakes but we are human! ( mmm , not so sure about the mrs though!:D)

I've spent the past few hours setting up at home for my week 4 , hit problems all along the line to end up with 2 completely clear sheets of quarter plate film:eek:.....I know what can cause that to happen but have yet to pinpoint exactly which error I made:(

All part of the cock ups of film....would we have it any other way??...I think not! Could always go 100% digital and have no fun:D :D :D

Correctamundo :D it's called a 52 challenge for a reason, if i wanted a 52 easy i would do it on digital ;)

Hi Rob,

completely understand about the technical hiccoughs, so fair play for posting the shots - I'll do the same on the weeks when I stuff my dev. With that out of the way, week 2 is fun - great expression! I love the balance of the spiral image too. I've been taking pics of one of the staircases in work recently and appreciate how you do need to spend a bit of time getting the composition right, so nice work there! I possibly would have cropped it a little tighter at the lower and right edge so that the two bottom diagonals point more to the corners, but that's a personal thing.

And I think a redo on 4 at some point later in the challenge would be appropriate - looks like a location with potential.

Keep it up :)

Thanks for taking the time to drop by Brian :) I intend to go back and re-shoot the last one when im in that area of Manchester again, so maybe later in the 52 :) I see what you mean about the crop on the staircase one, will have a play in lightroom later.

Thanks again :)

rubber-toe! I'll keep checking back and seeing how you're getting on in the challenge... liking the selfie and spiralling (y) Keep 'em coming!

Well if it isnt my old mucker Leigh, thanks for dropping by mate. With any luck, one of the shots from Wales may appear in the course of the challenge :)

Week 5 - Experiment

As a science student, it's safe to say i like experiments, whether in the lab, kitchen or the darkroom. Spent a good 4 hours in the darkroom today with a good mate of mine and towards the end of the session the idea of combining a Contact print and a Rayogram came to us. So we had a crack at it and loved the results... The Conta-gram :D

Techie details - Ilford Grade 5 paper, 8x10 inches

Interesting experiment there Rob with good effect.
I'd never come across Rayogram before so was interesting to learn the method on your flicker.
The self portrait on the second row down is a sharp contrast to your week 2 version.....all done up in a collar and tie....makes you look even younger:D
I think we'll have to nickname you "mph" if you keep experimenting like this ..."Mad Proffesor Hooley" .......:D :D

I look a lot younger because it's my 17 year old brother who i share a strong resemblance with not me :D

I have a few other ideas for these sort of images so expect to see some more of them later on in the challenge :)

Mmmmm kinda shot myself in the head with that one didn't I

Definetly looks like you..........At least you resemble your brother, that's not so bad.......many people tell me I look like my mother!!!!:puke:

I'll let you off ;) teachers always got us mixed up at school, seems i cant get away from him, not even on here :O

Nice work Rob. Good to see a bit of variation, always a challenge on these year-long projects.

Thanks for dropping by Nick :) the aim of my 52 is to make me shoot different things and i'm always up for a challenge :D

Hi Rob, I've been meaning to comment on these photos for a while. I love the idea! Definitely revisit this later on - it's well worth developing the process further.

I've been trying to guess the cameras from the silhouettes. Is the lower one an olympus and the upper a spotmatic?

Did you put the camera in the liquid?

Thanks for taking the time :) I have a few ideas im going to try next time im in :)

Alas 0/2 :D The top one is a Fujica STX-1 and the bottom one is a Canon FX

Ahh, I've not done wet printing, you'll have to show me sometime. I bought a tonne of Ilford paper at focus last year but I've never got anywhere near the darkroom with it.

Can do most weekends, the SU is only open on saturdays so let me know when you want to have a crack at it

Week 6 and maybe 7 will be up during the week :)

Week 6 - Somewhere new

Llynnau Mymbyr by Rob Hooley, on Flickr

Only the second time i've been to Wales, but the first time in the Northern part. This was taken just after sunrise on my RB67 with Fuji Acros 100.
Enjoy :)
All C&C welcome :)

Thanks Mart :) Not quite sure why i shot it in portrait orientation but its starting to grow on me. The location is a cracker and pretty local to you as well, win win situation

The portrait orientation suits the shot very well Rob....capturing the sky like that and the low POV pulls the distance hills forward into the scene(y)

couple more weeks worth of images due up over the week
