Who keeps

memories alive after

media stop telling
the story?
The map stories on the following
pages were created between 1993
and 2000 to focus attention and
resources on places in Chicago
where bad news has happened and
to draw volunteers and donors to
volunteer based tutor/mentor
programs in those areas. Visit our
web sites, blogs and social media
pages to see maps made since
2008.

Since 1993 the Tutor/Mentor Connection
(T/MC) has been using maps to show where
volunteer based tutor/mentor programs are
located in Chicago, with additional
information showing where these programs
are most needed.

Map stories were created as part

of a strategy to build greater
public interest and involvement in
Programs located throughout the
Chicago region.

Poverty in Chicago is not a new problem.
This story is from 1994!

While media
stories
occasionally use
maps, these are
not intended as
advertising, to
draw volunteers,
donors and
leaders to
support needed
youth
development,
mentoring and
jobs programs in
neighborhoods
of high poverty

The strategy launched by the T/MC in 1994
aims to follow negative news with map
stories that tell “The Rest of the Story”.
These aim to draw operating resources and
volunteers to youth tutor/mentor programs
growing in these areas.

These maps were created

in 1996, demonstrating a
long term commitment to
using maps to mobilize
resources for high poverty
areas of Chicago.

On the following pages are map stories
created since 1994.

You can print these and share them in

your own network, or use them as
teaching examples, that show the types
of stories you and volunteers in your
neighborhood can use to draw attention
and resources to needed social
purpose organizations operating in your
neighborhood, or your entire city.

blogs to see more examples of how maps can be used to mobilize
resources needed in different neighborhoods of cities like Chicago.

Mapping Englewood

what tutor/mentor programs operate in
the Englewood area of Chicago, and to
show potential assets who could help
mobilize volunteers, donors, leadership
support, etc.

Example of Map Analysis to Determine Distribution of Corporate Philanthropy

After the ad ran in 1998 T/MC mapped locations of

agencies listed in the ad showing most located in
central part of Chicago. This was sent to CEO saying
“If I lived in a different area than where you fund
programs, I might want to choose another airline.”
Companies can use maps to align community
involvement with where they do business.

These stories
keep
repeating
If adults cannot keep our
attention focused on this
problem, there will never be
enough well-organized
programs operating in
neighborhoods where these
stories happen too
frequently.

Youth could learn to create

stories like this as part of
their own service and
learning. Try it.

A printed directory was distributed each year from 1994 to 2003.

I've been using maps since 1993, but I've never

been the “map maker”. I had help from
volunteers and professionals from 1994 to 2011
and donated software from ESRI. The Program
Locator shown at lower right was built by a team
from India in 2008.

Unfortunately, after 2011 I have not been able

to find the money, or the volunteers, to keep
these resources updated, so the Program
Locator is only available as an archive. It's still
a template anyone can use to support efforts to
make mentor-rich youth programs available in
all high poverty areas of big cities like Chicago. View archive at https://tinyurl.com/ProgramLocatorMap-archive
