Position Summary

Position Responsibilities

The Technology Division at Green River College is seeking individuals who have an entrepreneurial spirit, knowledge of modern software development methods and tools, and a passion for helping students learn and apply technical skills. The Technology Division encourages collaboration with colleagues to create an effective learning environment that is open to all students, especially for women and other underrepresented and underserved groups in the technology sector.
The successful candidate will teach Information Technology / Software Development courses at a variety of levels in lecture (whiteboard design, live coding), lab (hands-on work with students), or online settings. Primary teaching responsibilities may include:

  •  Introductory to intermediate programming and scripting in a variety of languages (including some of the following: Java, PHP, SQL, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Python, Swift)
  • Full stack web development using modern frameworks
  • Mobile application development
  • Database fundamentals
  • Agile development methods
  • Debugging, automated testing, and software maintenance
  • Configuration management and deployment
  • and others as technology evolves
 
In addition to teaching, responsibilities will include student advising, course/curriculum development, providing support to adjunct faculty members, recruiting students, supporting the program's advisory committee, developing and maintaining relationships with technical professionals in the region, sponsoring student activities, and participating in other college and division professional activities such as committee work, special projects, and professional development.
 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

  • Ability to build constructive professional working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual regard.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Proficiency in a variety of modern programming and scripting languages.
  • Ability to help others resolve technical defects in code and in configurations.
  • Knowledge of issues involving the underrepresentation of women and minorities in computing education and computing fields in industry.
  • Excitement for technology, and interest in keeping current with leading-edge technologies relating to the program curriculum.
  • Interest in developing learning outcomes and assessments, designing and developing course materials, and in alternative delivery methods such as work-based learning, project-based learning, peer instruction, and online instruction.
  • Work in a complex and dynamic environment where success is often the result of open communication, respect, cooperation and collaboration.
  • Maintain ethics, integrity, and use sound professional judgment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Master's degree or PhD in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • Teaching and/or training experience in a hands-on and/or project-based learning environment.
  • Practice of strategies and techniques to actively address the gender gap problem and to support underrepresented minorities in computing courses.
  • Leadership experience (team lead, senior developer, or manager) on a software development team.
  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) and/or other relevant industry certifications.
  • Three years of relevant work experience during the past five years.
 
 
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
 
A valid Washington State driver's license is required.
 
 
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
 
Working conditions are normal office working conditions. Requires occasional travel, mostly within Washington State, for meetings, recruiting events, workshops, and conferences. Requires occasional evening/weekend work for pre-scheduled special events.
 
Must act as a role model demonstrating maintain professional attitude, and spirit of mutual regard to staff, employees, students, and industry partners. Requires extensive computer use.
