Goal: Use Google to find Links of websites before they are lost. Record those links on FanloreQuestions?greerwatson.livejournal.com
4
MeDeeFanlore@gmail.com
5
6
Step 2: Use Google to find pages with that fandom. Use this search query: site:fortunecity.com "FANDOM" Example: to search for Doctor Who you would use this query: site:fortunecity.com "doctor who" (Using quotes will give more precise results) (If you want to search European Fortunecity URLs see Step 3.)
7
Step 3: You will see a list of pages with names and URLs. The websites will be offline because Fortunecity has shut down. No worries, just copy the URL and the website name onto a word document or in an email. Make note if this is a single fandom wesbite or a multifandom. If multifandom, include a few of the fandoms. Most of the fandom pages on FortuneCity are multi-fandom websites so don't worry if there is overlap. Note: if you're finding mainly websites with episode guides or spam websites, try using one of the following queries to locate more fan created content: "fanfiction" or "fan art" or "music vid" or "Music video." Also try the query with a few alternate European Fortunecity URLs as they used several domain names: fortunecity.co.uk, fortunecity.es, fortunecity.it, and fortunecity.se"fic" "fanfic" and "fanfiction" often get different specific results, so try all three in a targeted search
8
Step 4: Do this for the first 5 pages of Google results (feel free to dig deeper if you like)
9
Step 5: Enter the website names and URLs onto Fanlore at: http://fanlore.org/wiki/List_of_FortuneCity_Fansites For single fandom websites, put the info alphabetically under the fandom name. For mutiple fandom websites put them alphabetically under the Mutlifandom section. Make certain to list a few of the fandoms. If you don't feel comfortable adding the info onto Fanlore, leave a comment next to your "claim" on the "Claim Your Fandom" spreadsheet that you need help. Send your list of websites and URLS to medeefanlore@gmail.com

If you want to know more about a website before you grab the link (Cached Google Websites)
12
13
Step 1: General site search on Google. Enter the following search:
14
site:fortunecity.com FANDOM
15
16
This brings up individual pages; and, if they're cached, click on the "cached" button to see what's there. If it looks hopeful, then go to step 2. To learn more about Cached Google pages go here: http://www.googleguide.com/cached_pages.html.
17
18
Step 2: In a separate window, do a search on the site the page came from:
19
site:http://.NEIGHBOURHOOD.fortunecity.com/SITE/
20
or
21
site:http:members.fortunecity.com/SITE/NUMBER/
22
23
You can find the URL up at the top of the cached page where Google has a banner with the info about the page.
24
25
Doing this site-specific search means that you can see what other pages were on the same site. That gives you a look at the scope of the site. Is it a personal site with one or two tribute pages? A big multi-fandom screen-capture or reccing site? A fanfic archive? A personal fansite for a single fandom?
26
27
If you want to screencap artwork or images on a website
28
29
For some cached Google sites, the images no longer show up even though the text will appear. The images are still in Google however. Here is a method to find them – and screencap if needed. Most often handy for archiving a fan artists website that has just gone offline.
30
31
Step 1: Google:
32
Site:fortunecity.com/websiteURL
33
34
Step 2: Click on Images (to the left on Google on my screen)
35
36
Step 3: You can screencap whatever images are still there.
37
38

39
40
Should I be screencapping the actual pages?
41
That's up to you and your available time and energy. If you see a website that you really love or think has useful/valauble content, by all means screencap it. If you do screencap pages, focus on pages that are not in the Wayback Machine. You can run the URL through the WayBack machine here:http://wayback.archive.org/ If you need help getting the screncaps onto Fanlore send me an email or leave a note on the spreasheet next to where you claimed the Fandom with the number of screencaps and a way to contact you. I'll pass the info on up to the Wiki Committee since organizing a larger scale Fanlore data entry project is beyond our scope.
